Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In most European countries there is a growing imbalance between the supply and demand of medical manpower. Though many national gov ernments, international organizations and scientific institutes, and also, with a view from a different angle, doctors associations recognize this problem, it appears to be very difficult to bring all people concerned with this problem together in order to find a solution. On this occasion, the initiative to arrange an international meeting was taken by the junior-doctors associations of The Netherlands and Sweden with the organizational support of the Faculty of Medicine of University Limburg, Maastricht, The Netherlands, and under the auspices of the Permanent Working Group of European Junior Hospital Doctors. The symposium should be considered as a step in a series of continuing activities within the field of health manpower planning. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) organized a working symposium on Long-Range Forecasting and Planning in 1968 (8ellaglio, Italy), followed by the Expert Committee ofthe OECD which produced the 'New Directives in Education for Changing Health Care System' (OECD CERI report, Paris 1975). The Dutch ministries of Education and Sciences and of Health and Environmental Protection organized a seminar on 'Cooperation of Health Care and Education at Regional Level, Responsibilities and Cost Alloca tion' (1978, Noordwijkerhout, The Netherlands). Following this, the Dutch Association of Junior Hospital Doctors (LVAG) organized a national con ference 'Today a consultant in training, tomorrow an unemployed special ist ' (1980, Utrecht, The Netherlands).

Neuware - In Harch of 1980, we organized the first symposium on how to evaluate new antiarrhythmic agents in which the participants included members of the Cardio-Renal Division of the Food and Drug Administration, academic investigators from the United States and Abroad and directors and imple mentors of pharmacological research representing the pharmaceutical industry. By bringing together all three elements, it was hoped that better communication and under standing would ensue to more rapidly bring new cardiac agents to the American public. This goal was important since a rather limited number of antiarrhythmic agents were and are currently available to treat patients with such disorders in the United States. These agents are needed not only for the treatment of patients with sustained ventricular tachyarrhythmias which produce life-threatening hemodynamic consequences but also and in fact more potentially important as a prophylactic measure in the high risk patient subject to sudden cardiac death. This book represents the proceedings of the third of these Symposiums whose purpose was to evaluate the clinical research methodology and models used in the evaluation of ne' antiarrhythmic agents for not only acute therapeutic inter vention but also for the prophylaxis of sudden cardiac death. In addition, new devices have evolved over the past few years that can detect and treat life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias and the evaluation of efficacy and safety of these devices is detailed.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Linguistic theory has seen a substantial shift in focus during the past decade. Whereas early research in generative grammar sought descriptive adequacy through the proliferation of transformational rules, recent efforts have concentrated on defining systems of principles that restrict the application of a greatly simplified sys tem of rules of grammar. These principles, because of their broad application within a particular language, and their appearance in a wide range of languages under investigation, are claimed to reflect innate cognitive structures often termed universal grammar. Accompanying this new, and very interesting research in linguis tic theory is an interest in certain aspects of the language acquisi tion process that relate to the theoretical claims. As new insights allow us to hypothesize both more specifically and more plausibly about linguistic universals, the actual facts about linguistic develop ment in young children become increasingly relevant as additionaldata on which to formulate and test new ideas. This book looks closely at a particular set of linguistic structures with respect to both linguistic theory and language development, exploring the relationship between the theoretical claims and the results of a series of language acquisition experiments. Although work of this sort is often called interdisciplinary, the issues addressed are clearly defined, although not all of them are answered. This book should be of particular interest to linguists, and to psychologists concerned with linguistic and cognitive development.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This book concerns the institutionalisation of the physical sciences. The book breaks with the established tradition in the history, philosophy and sociology of sciences by attempting to capture both the cognitive and social dimensions of institutionalisation in one unified analysis. This unifica tion has been achieved through a treatment of research as goal directed social action - a theme which has been developed both theoretically and empirically. The analysis presented is therefore unique in its breadth of focus and shows how the traditional concerns of sociology with generalised macro-structures of meaning and action can be related to the lifeworlds of individual scientists. The sociology of the sciences is still today a relative newcomer to the field of sciences studies which has traditionally been dominated by the history and philosophy of the sciences. I hope that this book reflects the excitement I experienced in being able to respond to the debates and concepts which erupted in that particularly fertile period follOwing the publication of Kuhn's Structure of Scientific Revolutions in 1962 - a period from which a cogni tively oriented sociology of the sciences was to emerge as a serious challenger to orthodoxies in the history, philosophy and sociology of sciences.

Two-phase flow applications are found in a wide range of engineering systems, such as nuclear and conventional power plants, evaporators of refrigeration systems and a wide vari ety of evaporative and condensive heat exchangers in the chemical industry. This publication is based on the invited lectures presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on the Advances in Two-Phase Flow and Heat Transfer. The Horkshop was attended by more than 50 leading scientists and practicing engineers who work actively on two-phase flow and heat transfer research and applications in dif ferent sectors (academia, government, industry) of member countries of NATO. Some scientific leaders and experts on the subject matter from the non-NATO countries were also invited. They convened to discuss the state-of-the-art in two-phase flow and heat transfer and formulated recommendations for future research directions. To achieve these goals, invited key papers and a limited number of contributions were presented and discussed. The specific aspects of the subject were treated in depth in the panel sessions, and the unresolved problems identified. Suitable as a practical reference, these volumes incorporate a systematic approach to two-phase flow analysis.

Neuware - In addition to performing its prime function as a vehicle for scientific communications of varied colora tions, Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry is again focusing on two subjects which it treats in depth. One of these is a book issue dealing with the transglutaminase reaction. The other is this issue that deals with induction and modulation of enzymes. This is a very broad subject that calls for broader coverage than could be included in one book issue. However, I have elected to include only certain contributions that serve as general examples of the principles involved. There are six articles on enzyme regulation in hepatocyte culture. These include arginase and argino-succi nate synthetase, y-glutamyl transferase and plasminogen activitor. Other regulatory enzymes that are discussed are protein kinases, 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate synthetases, carbamoyl phosphate synthetase, heme oxygenase, cytochrome P-450, tyrosine hydroxylase, fatty acid synthetase, acetyl eoA carboxylase, among others. Also included is the regulation of several enzyme messengers RNAs. As in the past, subscribers to the journal will receive this double volume as a continuation of regular issues of the journal Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry. This double volume will also be available separately in the form of a book issue to interested readers through Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. v.A. Neuware - The principal objective of this symposium was to bring together investigators from all over the world who work in diverse areas of research but share a common interest in the physiologic and pathophysiologic funetions of the nueleoside adenosine. In 1978, the 'International Conference on Physiological and Regulatory Funetions of Adenosine and Adenine Nueleotides,' held in Banff, Canada, served as an effective catalyst in enabling scientists with differ ent points of view to exchange information and ideas on this subject. Since 1978, the amount of research on different as peets of adenosine metabolism, mechanism of action, transport, and function in various tissues (in both nor maI and abnormal states) has increased exponentially, and there was an urgent need for another meeting for updating information on this burgeoning subject. The focus of the meeting was extremely sharp, but the scope of the subject material was very broad. Scientists categorized as chemists, biochemists, physiologists, pharmacologists, and immunologists, working with cells and eelI fragments, with tissues such as heart, brain, musele, fat, kidney, and with human beings having immune deficiency diseases participated in the sym posium. They had an opportunity to air their differences, reinforce their areas of agreement, and, most important, they educated each other with respeet to research on adenosine; it is hoped that they also enriched their own research programs from the information they gained from their fellow participants.
