The SPG or Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts, incorporated in 1701, worked as a missionary organization of the Church of England. Part of the SPG Handbook Series. Notably, the Handbook includes a section titled "the colour problem" (pp34-35): [Australia] has decided for a white Australia. . Firstly, the idea of a mixed race is specially abhorrent to the Anglo-Saxon.; Secondly, the white man knows that his labour could not compete in the open market with the Chinese or Indian, whose low standard of living and unwearying patience would drive down the level of wages". Additional contents include a history of Australia, the country & its products, growth of the Australian church, Missions of the Australian Church (includes descriptions of a town parish, a bush parish, "a gold parish", and Bush Brotherhoods), and present problems. 8vo, 79pp, ads [2]pp, b&w printed photographic illustrations, maps. Map printed inside front wrapper compares size of Australia to the United States. Printed blue decorative color paper wrappers. Wrappers slightly foxed, chipped at spine; internally, binding staples rusted, some rust at center pages at staple site, but holdling, the text bright and fresh. Possibly the same as Trove 45742056.

Small Chinese figure, 17 x 6 cms, padded silk brocade, paper, hair and watercolour, (the painted face a little scuffed), mounted onto stiff card and backed onto what appears to be the verso of a certificate or exercise book cover (trimmed and creased with a repaired tear and a few minor abrasions) printed with the text "King's Messengers, S.P.G./ Rugby Branch. / Passed Examination in Missionary Knowledge. Secretary. Chaplain. 19." (all blank), the figure with a loop at the head for display or hanging, very good, clean condition. The King's Messengers were the children's branch of a Church of England Missionary Society: S.P.G. ("The Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts,"). Presumably the delicately made figure was constructed at a Society mission in China (S.P.G. sent missionaries to China in 1895) and at some point glued to the backing. A loop at the top suggests that the figure was intended to hang free. The doll-like figure represents an unusual example of folk art.
