Zustand: NEW. 392, col photos + illus. . HB. NEW. . It is not many years since most journeys along the UK's motorway system involved at least one sighting of a small chestnut-coloured bird hanging motionless about the road verges. The bird was the Common Kestrel, its 'hovering', now officially called 'flight-hunting' to distinguish it from the true hovering of hummingbirds, being a characteristic that separated from the other raptors (birds of prey) that breed in the British Isles. But times change. The management of motorway verges have made them less attractive as hunting grounds and, more importantly, the population of Kestrels has sharply declined, a decline which continues as the intensification of agriculture and the populations of other raptors increases. The Common Kestrel investigates that decline, after first exploring all aspects of the Kestrels' life, from plumage and diet through breeding to survival. Data for this investigation were collected from across the Kestrel's range, but also includes a four-year study in which video cameras were installed to watch breeding behaviour in a barn in southern England. A further study also investigated the flight of the falcons using the modern technology of inertial measurement units and hi-speed photography. Allied to excellent photography, the result is a comprehensive book on this most fascinating of small raptors. [9780957173248].…

Zustand: New. 352, col + b/w photos + illus, maps. 234x156mm. HB. NEW. . 2nd edition. The Merlin is a fascinating small falcon, standing outside the usual grouping of the 'True Falcons', and with a range that is confined to northern climes, an exclusive preference that is shared by only one other, the much larger Gyrfalcon. This is the first comprehensive book on the species, covering its complete circumpolar range. The book starts with a general comments on the evolution of the True Falcons and thoughts on their grouping, then covers the general characteristics of the Merlin, the species' habitat, its diet, breeding (territory, displays, pair formation, nest sites, eggs, chick growth, nest predation and breeding success), migration and wintering, survival, the Merlin's friend and foes, and estimations of the world population. It also includes data gathered with a unit flown on a male Merlin. [9780957173224]. …

Zustand: New. 576, col + b/w photos, col + b/w illus. . HB. NEW. . Second edition. This comprehensive book on this most iconic bird of prey showcases innovative research and groundbreaking data that is revealing new aspects of their lives. The second edition is updated with additional research, including more insights into their sensory biology based on micro-CT scans of skulls.Over the last five years, the urban population of Peregrines has increased dramatically. In part this was due to the increase in urban pigeon populations - where pigeons breed, Peregrines can flourish. But the human populations of towns and cities have also helped, providing potential breeding sites and installing video cameras so that urban folk can watch and admire the falcons. Renowned for their speed and flight abilities, a bird that once could only be seen in remote, wild places, became a star of local CCTV.This updated book investigates all aspects of Peregrine life, from plumage, through diet, breeding and survival. The falcons breed on all continents apart from Antarctica and data has been collected from across that vast range. In addition, modern technology has been used to study the flights which have made the falcon famous as arguably the fastest creature on the planet. Allied to excellent photography the result is a comprehensive book on this most iconic bird. For the second edition, all chapters have been revised with chapters 1 and 3 in particular featuring substantial revision and addition of new material. In chapter 1 the latest taxonomical research has been included to provide an updated picture of Falconiformes phylogenetics. Dissections and computer reconstructions have revealed more about the structure of the air sacs that are part of the respiratory system. Chapter 3 provides new data and discussion on the function and evolutionary origin of the Peregrine's tubercle (a cone-shaped structure in the nostril) and dispels some of the myths surrounding this structure. Additionally, results from micro-CT scanning reveal previously unseen details on bone thickness of limb and wing bones and on the internal anatomy of the nasal passage. Together with this anatomical data, results from behavioural experiments presented here strongly support the idea that peregrine falcons have a sense of olfaction they use in hunting. Finally, a notable addition to chapter 10 has been consideration of current and expected future impacts on Peregrine falcons of climate change. [9780957173279]. …
