In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Fair dj. First American Edition. [top corners bumped, some offsetting to endpapers, otherwise a solid clean book; jacket insect-nibbled at various points along edges, spine color-shifted, light dampstaining to rear panel]. "This is the story of Violet Amory, a New York society beauty of the twenties and thirties, who sought a carefree life in the playgrounds and pleasure resorts of the idle rich, but found the price more than she could pay. With her young son Peter, her devoted hangers-on, her kennel of little dogs, her Cartier jewels and Vuitton trunks, she drifted to Venice, Paris, the Riviera, New York, and Newport, leaving a trail of beautiful young men behind her." The story is narrated by the son, who "describes with elegance, charm, and a deftly unobtrusive irony the ultra-fashionable world" through which his mother gayly wafts. Illustrated by (dj painting) Cecil Beaton (illustrator).…

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Fair. Very Good dj. First Edition. [ex-rental library book with considerable wear (especially to bottom edge), related stamping on ffep, rear hinge cracked, remnants of dust jacket flaps still affixed to both pastedowns, tape marks, etc.; jacket itself is bright and clean (must have been a second or spare copy), slightly faded at spine, otherwise blemished only by two pieces of old tape on each flap and by having trimmed by about 3/16" along the bottom edge (so that it's that much shorter than the book)]. Story about "the coming of age of a modern Cape Cod girl who had a will of her own . an active girl who loves her native Cape Cod with true feeling." "Active," in this instance, appears to be a euphemism for huntin' and fishin' and (especially) shootin': the heroine's coming-of-age has something to do with killing a whole lotta birds. Something for the Sarah Palin crowd. NOISBN.…

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Good+ dj. First Edition. [book is moderately worn at the extremities, former owner's name plus date & place of purchase in ink at top of front endpaper, bookplate on front pastedown; the jacket, which has some edgewear and a couple of tiny chips, has been internally tape-reinforced along most edges and folds, and has also been touched up and filled-in along both the top and bottom edges]. (A Bloodhound Mystery) Series An unusual mystery novel, centering around the use of graphology (handwriting analysis) to solve a murder that takes place in a newspaper office. This was the only novel by Ms. Stafford, described in the jacket blurb as "America's best-known and most gifted graphologist," as indeed she was (best-known, anyway, by virtue of having had a regular newpaper column, which debuted in the Chicago Tribune in 1934 and later in papers across the country. (When it began running in the Los Angeles Times in January 1935, she cemented her "graphologist to the stars" reputation from the outset, choosing Bing Crosby as the subject of her first column. (The rear jacket flap of this book contains a list of some of the famous people whose handwriting she had analyzed, from J. Edgar Hoover to Mae West.) She also had a bit of a side gig going, it seems, offering a "personal analysis" of readers' handwriting, for only 10 cents, "to cover mailing and handling charges." Sounds like a deal, although at that time it only cost 3 cents to mail a first-class letter.) The book, in fact, is written in the first person, she having cast herself as the heroine of the tale, and starts very much like a memoir. Numerous facsimile handwriting examples are scattered throughout the text and worked into the narrative.…

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Very Good dj. First Edition. [minimal wear to book, a nice clean copy; jacket is sunned a bit along the spine, with a few tiny edge-tears and nicks, a small sticker scar/remnant on rear panel (affecting just a few words of the rear-cover blurb)]. The author's first (and apparently only) novel, about a young man "crossing the line from adolescence to manhood" in a single 24-hour period: "In rapid sequence he experiences his first love affair, an all-night drinking and soul-searching session with his anxious but wonderfully funny and human pals, and a man-sized, terrible row with his mother." The author's rear-jacket bio describes about a dozen or so early-in-life work experiences ("the customary writer's apprenticeship"), but by the time this book appeared he seems to have settled into the life of an arts administrator and educator, with a number of later non-fiction works on his resume, including a history of the founding of the National Endowment for the Arts. Inexplicably uncommon in the online marketplace, although OCLC reveals that it made its way into plenty of libraries (35, if you must know). Illustrated by (dj design) Larry Lurin (illustrator).…

A novelized biography of the author of "Common Sense" and one of our country's Founding Fathers. Fast's first popular success, it was published the same year he joined the Communist Party USA, a significant step on the path which ultimately led him to a short prison sentence for contempt of Congress for his refusal to "name names" during his 1950 HUAC testimony. (lacking the original dust jacket, but encased in a professionally-made facsimile reproduction of same; see 2nd image posted with this listing) [solid copy, slight deterioration to cloth at spine ends, considerable age-toning to pages as typical with this title] Hard-boiled suspense yarn about a Chicago tough guy who comes to Santa Fe, New Mexico, seeking revenge for a double-cross. One of this underrated author's most notable works, in large measure because of the stylish film noir made from it by Robert Montgomery (who both directed and starred) in 1947. He lives in an obscure rooming house, devoting himself selflessly to the logders he finds there, a group of strange folk blindly concerned with their own special problems and wholly unaware of relationships which bind them to each other and to a large human society." (lacking the original dust jacket, but encased in a professionally-made facsimile reproduction of same; see 2nd image posted with this listing) [a good sound copy, spine very slightly turned, minor external soiling, a touch of fading to spine cloth]. The first (and only) novel by Gunn, who went on to a decent career as a film and TV writer/producer, which was unfortunately cut short by his death at age 46. Boiled about as hard as you can get, it's a ruthless book populated by ruthless, amoral people -- not only can you not put it down, as they say, but in this case I'd advise against even turning your back on it. Basis for the 1947 film noir BORN TO KILL, directed by Robert Wise for RKO, and starring Lawrence Tierney and Claire Trevor; the film was faithful to the book's misanthropic spirit and grisly violence, which earned it plenty of trouble from the movie censorship authorities. In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. 3rd printing (unstated). (lacking the original dust jacket, but encased in a professionally-made facsimile reproduction of the first edition jacket; see 2nd image posted with this listing) [spine a bit turned, light external wear and mild soiling, slight fading to cloth along bottom edge of front cover, one-time owner's signature on front endpaper]. (B&W photographs) Weegee the Famous's first and most famous book, which grew out of the attention that New York's Museum of Modern Art began to give to the photographer's work in 1943 (when four of his prints were featured in a late-summer exhibition called "Action Photography") and early 1944 (he gave a talk on "Realism in Photography" at the Museum in early April, and five more of his photos were included in a related exhbition); these were among the earliest significant steps on his ascent from tabloid bloodhound to photographic artist. According to biographer Christopher Bonanos, Weegee assembled a dummy version of the book, which he shopped around to various publishers but for about six months before finally making a deal with Duell, Sloan & Pearce to issue the book under their Essential Books imprint. The book was an immediate hit, and although the reviews were somewhat mixed, the surrounding its publication went a long way to making the photographer's self-ascribed moniker "Weegee the Famous" into a reality. Not only did it give Weegee's reputation as a serious photographic a huge boost, but it also injected "the Naked City" into the American lexicon as a kind of shorthand for the seedy side of New York City -- an association that was only enhanced by the 1948 movie THE NAKED CITY (inspired by the book but actually using only its title, rights to which were acquired by producer Mark Hellinger) and the 1958-1963 TV series NAKED CITY. (According to Wikipedia, Weegee was hired as a "visual consultant" on the 1948 film, which was shot on location in NYC, but the AFI Catalog states that he was the film's "official still photographer"; neither is quite true. Per Bonnano, Hellinger put him on the payroll for $100 a week as a "technical adviser" (a more prosaic and even more nebulous job title than "visual consultant") whose "main job was to take still pictures on the set" (which would not have made him the film's "official still photographer," an important and highly specialized task that no doubt would have been covered by a film-industry professional). Whatever he actually did, it was uncredited -- although he does, however, appear in the film, in a fleeting cameo as -- what else? -- a news photographer.) NOTE that what denotes this copy as a third printing are: (1) the tan cloth cover is only very slightly textured (notably less so than the first printing); (2) the book has photographic endpapers (identical to those in the front, but which are not present in the first printing); and (3) it bears the Duell, Sloan and Pearce imprint on the spine, just beneath that of Essential Books. (The first two printings have only the Essential Books imprint on the spine.) Also NOTE again that this book bears a FACSIMILE dust jacket, to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing.…
