Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Common Practice seeks to examine the ways in which contemporary art relates with the sport and surrounding culture of basketball. Basketball has long proven to inform and inspire works of art across generations, from David Hammon's 'Higher Goals' and Robert Indiana's 'Mecca Floor', to the current day works of Nina Chanel Abney and Titus Kaphar. Many of the artists represented have at one point or more throughout their practice shared an interest in utilizing the ubiquity of basketball iconography as a means to shine a light on issues of social inequality, political justice and other formidable cultural commentary.This publication serves as a journey to further understand basketball not only as a physical activity played between a series of lines, but to see the game outside of those lines through the wider lens of art. One hope is to advance the idea, especially for young people, that both artists and athletes have more in common than one might believe, and in doing so further disseminate the idea that creativity is not exclusive to just one type of person, but something we all have an intrinsic accessibility to.'Common Practice' is a colloquial term in every sense. The irony of joining the two contrasting worlds of art and basketball is a play on this idea, the thread between them being practice: 'to perform an activity or exercise regularly in order to improve or maintain one's proficiency'. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The first catalogue raisonné of a leading artist of the Cubist movement.Raymond Duchamp-Villon (1876-1918) was born in Eure, in the Haute-Normandie region of France. He was the brother of the artists Jacques Villon, Marcel Duchamp, and Suzanne Duchamp-Crotti.In 1894 Duchamp-Villon started a career in medicine at the Sorbonne. However rheumatic fever forced him to abandon his studies in 1898 and he began to pursue an interest in sculpture.He soon achieved a high level of mastery and acumen. In 1902 and 1903, he exhibited at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.He exhibited his work at the Salon d'Automne in 1905 and he was made a member of the jury of the sculpture section in 1907, becoming instrumental in promoting the Cubist movement.He participated in major salons in Paris and in 1912 he exhibited at the important Armory Show in New York City.During World War I Duchamp-Villon served in the French army in a medical capacity, but still participated in exhibitions and completed his major cubist sculpture, The Large Horse. In late 1916, Raymond Duchamp-Villon contracted typhoid fever and diedin a military hospital at Cannes.In 1967, in Rouen, his last surviving artist brother Marcel helped organize an exhibition called Les Duchamp: Jacques Villon, Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Marcel Duchamp, Suzanne Duchamp. Neuware - Barthélémy Toguo is a multiple disciplinary artist whose work addresses migration, colonialism, race, exile and displacement.Born in 1967 in Cameroon, he lives and works between Bandjoun and Paris. After studying at the fine arts academy in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, Toguo made his way to the fine arts academy in Grenoble, then the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. Freely encompassing drawing, sculpture, video, installation and performance, his creations draw inspiration from his experience, travels and encounters. Watercolour has a central place in his work.Toguo plays with the spaces where different materials overlap. He created pathways between Western and African traditions and observes the language and new identities that arise therein. His cultural and social engagement is evident in the Bandjoun Station art centre that he created in Cameroon in 2013.Toguo's work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Musée d'art contemporain, Lyon; Fondation Louis Vuitton; and Kunstsammlungen der Stadt, Düsseldorf, among others. Solo exhibitions of his work have been presented at institutions including Uppsala Art Museum, Sweden; Musée d'art moderne et contemporain de Saint-Etienne, France; La Verrière by Hermès, Brussels; Fundaçao Gulbenkian, Lisbon; and Palais de Tokyo, Paris.Languages: French and English.…
