Zustand: New. 160, . 240x165mm. PB. NEW. . With a foreword by Kurt Jackson. This book attempts to put species into the context of our perception. Animals are more than their physical form. They exist within their historical setting, within their habitats, within their past and their evolutionary future, both outside and beyond man, and within man and his circle. This work discusses the movement of species since the last ice age, what is native and non-native, migration, adaptation, the role of man and species in the industrial landscape. The concept of species lies at the heart of nature conservation, but our perception is changing and losing connection with the real world. We see wildlife as adjuncts to people, such as a cure for depression and isolation. With this view, we will never save wildlife from extinction. This book investigates the authenticity of species, compared with what are termed McDonald s species - species without natural connection with their habitats, super-imposed by Man, eroding the umbilical cord link with history. We have lost sight of what wildlife is about and instead are just managing decline. Concentration on large iconic species achieves brilliant publicity but looks after the icing whilst the cake crumbles beneath. This volume highlights the need for authenticity in wildlife. We need to accept where wildlife goes, minimising our interference, re-directing money towards where wildlife wants to be - in new as well as old habitats, by natural colonisation, in post-industrial landscapes, brown-field sites, railway corridors, metal-contaminated landscapes. It takes rewilding and makes it species led - where ugly animals thrive to the same extent as beautiful ones, where the minute are as important as the huge. [9781838152840].

This is the first book to cover the unique group of rock outcrops in central Wisconsin that appears to have put an end to a 150 year-old mystery of global interest. Since the mid-1800s, fossilized trackways and footprints have been found on beach deposits that date back to the Cambrian Period, some 500 million years ago in what is now North America but fossils of the animals that made them were reluctant to reveal themselves. Thanks to Blackberry Hill, the identity of some of the first animals to walk on land is a secret no more. [9780992997953].

The ability to travel through time, whether it is to fix a mistake in the past or gain insight into the future, has long been embraced by science fiction and debated by theoretical physicists. An old journal, found on a Dorset beach, provides evidence that two Edwardian fossil enthusiasts from the past (aka Steve Snowball and Craig Chivers) have already interacted with the future and recorded their remarkable journey along the West Dorset coast. Their observations are now to be seen in this superbly illustrated and highly informative book, which serves as an eight-day guided walk and identification guide to fossils of the West Dorset coast. The journal is further enhanced with illustrations by palaeo-artist, Andreas Kurpisz. [9781838152857].

Zustand: NEW. 222, col photos. 240x165mm. PB. NEW. . Palaeoentomology represents the interface between two huge scientific disciplines: palaeontology the study of fossils, and entomology the study of insects. However, fossils rarely feature extensively in books on insects, and likewise, insects rarely feature in books about fossils. Similarly, college or university palaeontology courses rarely have an entomological component and entomology courses do not usually consider the fossil record of insects in any detail. This is not due to a lack of insect fossils. The fossil record of insects is incredibly diverse in terms of taxonomic scope, age range (Devonian to Recent), mode of preservation (amber and rock) and geographical distribution (fossil insects have been recorded from all continents, including Antarctica). In this book the authors aim to help bridge the palaeontology entomology gap by providing a broadly accessible introduction to some of the best preserved fossil insects from a wide range of deposits from around the globe, many of which are beautifully illustrated by colour photographs. Also covered are insect behaviour and ecology in the fossil record, sub-fossil insects, trace fossils and insect species longevity. Just as insects are useful as ecological indicators today, the same can be expected to be true of the past. Such applications of the insect fossil record are briefly discussed. It is hoped that this book will encourage a few future researchers to enter the fascinating realm of palaeoentomology and to this end there is a section on how to become a palaeoentomologist. However, it is aimed at a much broader audience - those with an interest in fossils and/or insects in general, who will no doubt marvel at the diversity and excellent preservation of the fossils illustrated. Almost all the illustrations are from hand-coloured illustrations, many are more than 100 years old, some as early as the establishment of the Linnean classification system over 250 years ago. 350+ species are illustrated on the colour plates. The authors have brought the scientific nomenclature up to the current classification status. Many species from these islands have never been illustrated in a consolidated book before, and this in particular makes this book invaluable for field work. Although not all species are illustrated, they are generally covered in the text. This book is a must have for any serious student of Afrotropical butterflies. [9781838152833].

Zustand: New. 192, 442 col plates, 12 text figs. 240x165mm. PB. NEW. . With 557 named spider species in 202 genera and 58 families, Baltic amber represents the richest source of fossil spiders anywhere on the planet, with research describing this remarkable fossil fauna dating back more than 200 years. The identification of numerous species is problematic because many of the older descriptions are inadequate by current taxonomic standards. To compound this problem, many of the type specimens on which the original descriptions were based have been lost. This has resulted in many dubious names, which have not hitherto been dealt with appropriately, making the dataset of Baltic amber spiders appear richer and more diverse than it actually is. Clearly, this will have consequences for any palaeoecological studies that choose to use these data. In addition, spider systematics is a highly dynamic subject, based almost entirely on extant taxa, with the latest changes (new families, genera and species, genus transfers etc.) documented in the World Spider Catalog. Until now, no similar comprehensive catalogue existed for the Baltic amber spider fauna, making it difficult for researchers to get a reliable estimate of the true palaeodiversity of the deposit or to trace the taxonomic and systematic history of any particular taxon. The catalogue presented here resolves these problems, updates the systematic placements of fossil taxa based on recent research on extant faunas, and also serves as a starting point for searching the literature when trying to identify a new Baltic amber spider specimen. It includes 95 new taxonomic contributions. This volume will be invaluable to anybody who curates a fossil collection including Baltic amber spiders and to those who identify their own material. Alfred Russel Wallace (1823 1913), colleague of Charles Darwin, co-discoverer of the principle of natural selection, "father" of the field of evolutionary biogeography, vocal socialist and spiritualist, land reform theorist, intense social critic, etc., etc., was one of the most captivating figures of his time. Wallace began his professional career through two great natural history collecting expeditions, one to the amazon and the other to the australasian archipelago; so successful were these that many observers would place him as the front-ranking field naturalist of all time. After he returned to England in 1862, however, his professional emphasis shifted toward writing. His published works included more than twenty books and close to a thousand other items: technical scientific papers, essays, commentaries, book reviews, and, not least, some three hundred letters to the editor. It is in the last that his temperament comes out most strongly, and it is our privilege in the present work to reproduce more than two hundred of these, extending to all of his many intellectual passions. The philosopher Charles Peirce once wrote of Wallace that he "never wrote a dull line in his life, and couldn t if he tried", and the reader here can expect to be entertained accordingly. A comprehensive review of heteropteran biology, morphology, and classification down to the subfamily level. In the 24 years since the first edition was published, the knowledge of the Heteroptera has vastly increased. Almost 5000 new bug species and two new families have been described, and the categorical rank of multiple family-group taxa has been revised. The use of cladistic methods through the application of more-user-friendly computer programs and of DNA-sequence data in phylogenetic analysis has increased understanding of true-bug relationships. There has also been a great increase in the study of fossil Heteroptera.Introductory chapters are followed by a key to infraorders and the first review of fossil Heteroptera. The systematics chapters focus on living Heteroptera. Taxa are grouped by infraorder, superfamily, family, subfamily, and in some cases tribe. Diagnoses and information on the history of classification for suprafamilial taxa, all families, and for many subfamilies and tribes, as well as sections on Specialized Morphology, Natural History, and Distribution and Faunistics. Includes figures for general morphology and details of structure in all family-group taxa, as well as 32 color plates of habitus images and 2 of living bugs. This seminal volume will appeal to anyone interested in Heteroptera, including for use as a general reference, specialized textbook, aid to family-group identification, and a gateway to the ever-expanding literature on the group. In his own time he was acknowledged as joint author, with Darwin, of the theory of evolution by natural selection. Since then, the bright light shone on Darwin s achievements has cast Wallace into shadow. this book shows how Wallace s independent discovery of natural selection was no mere flash of inspiration, but the outcome of many years of study and reflection on his extraordinary early life as a field naturalist in South America and the rain forests of the Malay Archipelago . Surviving fever and insect bites on the amazon, he was shipwrecked with the loss of most of his notes and collections on his return journey. Astonishingly, within two years he was preparing for his second major expedition, this time to South East Asia, and for a stay of eight challenging years. It was here that he made his great scientific breakthrough, and provoked Darwin into prompt publication of his Origin.Wallace used his experience in the tropics as the basis for his next major achievement a classic work that established biogeography as a scientific specialism of great importance for today s urgent challenge to protect the world s biodiversity. As if this were not enough, Wallace became a bold and controversial public figure, campaigning on such issues as compulsory vaccination, parliamentary reform, and the rights of workers and colonised peoples. He was for many years president of the Land Nationalisation Society, and an ardent critic of the injustices of 19th century capitalism. Later in his life he engaged with radical thinkers such as William Morris, Edward Bellamy, Henry George, Robert Blatchford and Ebeneza Howard in envisaging just and sustainable alternative social and economic futures. This book gives a succinct account of Wallace s life, before going on to analyse in more detail the development of his ideas on natural selection, his disputes with Darwin on sexual selection and human evolution, and the development of his political ideas. In each topic, the author brings the story up to date, and assesses Wallace s ideas in the light of today s thinking. [9780957453029].
