Through the vehicle of fifty-one contemporary miniature paintings by eight Pakistani women artists, the visitor is presented with an unusual look at a prominent Islamic nation. The Academy is honored to present this exhibition, the first in an ongoing series of explorations of contemporary art from the Islamic world. Organized by Italian guest curators Enrico Mascelloni and Duccio K. Marignoli, this exhibition explores boundaries of experience in realm where for centuries women have been subservient to men. That a woman has recently served as Prime Minister of Pakistan has not changed many of the realities that have historically prevailed for women. Art is one arena of many, however, in which Pakistani women have given shape to their experiences and voiced independent aspirations for their lives. The art of small-scale paintings on paper has been one of the most sophisticated art forms in South and Southwest Asia for centuries. The achievements of the traditional Persian, Mughal, Decanni, Rajput, and Punjab schools of painting are internationally famous today. Revived during the British Colonial period, the miniature painting traditions of Pakistan have been recently rediscovered and transformed by a new generation of women artists. Among the themes developed by these painters are the tensions between traditionalism and modernism in contemporary Islamic cultures, and the ongoing dialogue about identity in post-colonial society. One of the most powerful images explored is the chaador, or veil, with which women cover themselves in many Middle Eastern Islamic nations. Several of the artists in this exhibition studied at the miniature painting department of the National College of Arts in Lahore (formerly the Mayo School of Arts). In her catalogue essay, "Contemporary Women Painters of Pakistan," Salima Hashmi touches on the political dimensions of this art, when she writes, "The homage to tradition and the reverence of its practice affords limitless chances for its subversion." It is noteworthy in this light that Hashmi points out the "irreverence inherent in the Sufi Islamic tradition prevalent in Pakistan." In a completely contemporary manner, the painters in this exhibition question both what we see and how we see it. The exhibition includes works by Tazeen Qayyum, Talha Rathore, Nusra Latif Qureshi, Saira Sheikh, Sumaira Tazeen, Sherbano Qizilbash, Mahreen Zuberi, and Reeta Saeed. The artists represented include women who live in Pakistan and several who are recent expatriates. Ce deuxième numéro des Cahiers de l'Institut Gustave Courbet, publié à l'occasion de l'exposition « Devenir Courbet » (musée départemental Gustave Courbet, Ornans, du 14 décembre 2024 au 20 avril 2025), explore une période méconnue de la vie de Gustave Courbet : sa jeunesse et son éducation culturelle et artistique. Complément indispensable au catalogue de l'exposition, il se concentre sur les années formatrices du peintre, notamment sa scolarité à Ornans au petit séminaire et à la Pension Lemontey-Oudot, puis à Besançon au collège royal du 1er novembre 1837 au 31 mars 1838 et enfin à l'académie de la ville. Plusieurs découvertes et inédits concernant Claude-Antoine Beau, le premier professeur de dessin et peinture de l'artiste à Ornans, sont révélés pour la première fois. Ils s'inscrivent à la suite des recherches effectuées depuis la redécouverte d'un Chemin de croix du «?Père Beau?» à La Barèche, une église proche d'Ornans. Ce cahier propose également la correspondance transcrite, annotée et reproduite des années de jeunesse de l'artiste avant son départ à Paris en novembre 1839. Il nous renseigne sur ses amis d'enfance : Gustave Bastide, Joseph Boulet, Urbain Cuenot, les frères Marlet et les frères Promayet. Le second thème présente un aspect peu connu de Gustave Courbet : son engagement dans la chorale d'Ornans, dont il était membre d'honneur. Grâce à un document inédit provenant des collections de l'Institut Gustave Courbet, on découvre l'importance de son implication dans la scène orphéonique de sa ville natale et comment elle influença ses prises de position politiques et artistiques. La mostra, a cura di Achille Bonito Oliva, Orietta Berlanda e Vincenzo Sanfo, presenta quattro serie complete di litografie e acqueforti ritoccate a mano che vanno dal 1928 agli anni Settanta e che sono state realizzate su carta e altri materiali dal 1960 al 1981. La serie che dà il titolo alla mostra Le Meraviglie vuole essere un omaggio alla visione della vita che Mirò percepiva come un "giardino" nel quale scorgere e godere delle meraviglie offerte dalla natura ma anche dalla capacità dell'Uomo di vivere in un sogno. Nel ripercorrere la straordinaria forza creativa di uno dei più grandi protagonisti dell'arte del Novecento, il percorso inizia con la serie completa di Ubu Roi, un "Uccello Re" che va in vacanza alle Baleari, nella quale un Mirò ancora surrealista incanta con i suoi giochi di colore e segno, profondità e forma. Segue la serie dei poemi chiamati Les marteau sans maitre dove il surrealismo evolve in una sorta di sintesi tra astrattismo geometrico e cromatismo lirico che si trasforma, nella terza serie, quella delle Meraviglie con variazioni, in un surrealismo maturo: poema e opera si confondono e l'osservatore non percepisce più così chiaramente quale sia l'opera e quale il poema; la matita litografica traccia figure di cui si comprendono la gioiosità e la voglia di evadere, mentre l'occhio incontra nello stesso momento uccelli e donne, libellule e volti, formiche e bambini.
