The foreword by Sir Nevile Bland, who was the British Ambassador to the Netherlands at the time. Leyden, Netherlands: A. W. Sijthoff's Publishing Company, 1946, first edition. Tan card cover with printed dust jacket, 29 photo illustrations in b/w, 71 pages. The book consists of letters written in 1946 by the author after her visit to the Netherlands. The letters are written to a soldier, a member of Parliament, a town planner, a farmer, and an industrialist, among others, who represent different sectors of society. Overall condition is very good. The cover has a light crease on front corner and dampstaining on the spine. Clean and unmarked, pages are age-toned. Illustrated jacket has 1/4 inch loss at spine head, 1 inch closed tear on front, and several smaller edge tears. Protected from further wear by a clear mylar cover. Small vintage bookstore label inside front, reading Boekhandel Winants Heerlen. In this book, orange on top relates to the recovery period after WW2 and represents national unity and resilience, loyalty to the monarchy (as orange was the color of the royal family), a historic reset of taking back the orange-white-blue flag that had been co-opted by the Nazi's, and a celebration of freedom like when after liberation in 1945 cities were filled with orange as a sign of joy (orange fever).
