Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Taylor, William B. (illustrator). This book is based on extensive interviews which the author conducted with the older citizens of Glasgow. They reminisced happily about their childhood and youth in the main. The oldest was almost 100, so first-hand memories go back to almost 1890, but those who were children in the 1890's remember also tales of their grandparents and so, here and there, glimpses of much older times emerge. Few of the recollections are later than the end of the World War II. The material has been arranged by subject matter rather than chronologically, and Anna Blair has attempted to link the passages in an informative and interesting way. Tea at Miss Cranston's was one of the many pleasures of that bygone age, and if nostalgia includes remembering also harsher times of poverty and war, or even the down-to-earth reality that made it cost a penny to hire a whitewash brush from a painter and decorator (with a ha'penny refund if it was taken back cleaned), then this book is nostalgic. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Part of an eight-volume series providing short biographies of men and women from Roman to Victorian times, Who's Who in Victorian Britain is concerned with the 'Age of Empire.' Victoria was the first English monarch to see her name given to the period of her reign while she was still alive: it was used as early as 1851. There were enough constant factors through-out the Victorian Age to give coherence to it. With the Royal Navy enforcing the Pax Britannica over much of the world, affording protection to shipping and trade, piracy virtually disappeared. There were large additions to the Empire and the Queen became Empress of India. Britain's statesmen, and the Queen through her family connections with other royal monarchs, sought to hold the balance of power between the conflicting ambitions and shifting fortunes of the other European empires. But at the end of her reign the Boer War introduced a note of uncertainty. Domestically, the period saw an oligarchic constitution being adapted in stages to an industrial society. It was the age when Britain was manufacturer to the world, but at some cost to the working class whose needs were taken up by writers, thinkers and reformers. Into a religious age, the seeds of doubt were sown by Darwin and the new Biblical critics. Each of the 190 short biographical essays places the subject in the context of their age and evokes what was distinctive and interesting about their personality and achievement. The biographies are arranged in a broadly chronological rather than alphabetical sequence so that the reader may easily browse from one contemporary to the next. The index, with its many cross-references, reveals further linkages between contemporaries. Each volume is a portrait of an age, presenting history in a biographical form which complements the conventional approach. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. When the Romans settled in Britain in 43 CE they could hardly have imagined that the small agricultural settlement of Londinium on the Thames would eventually become one of the biggest cities in the world. Its people worshipped then in small buildings like the Mithraeum, but over the next two thousand years cathedrals, synagogues, churches, mosques and temples changed the city skyline. Destroyed many times - by fire, disease, internal revolution and foreign powers - London has always rebuilt itself, stronger than ever in its determination to over-come all the difficulties put in its path. Gradually new forms of worship from beyond these islands came to influence the capital city, bringing with them other faiths, with their own prayers, scriptures and music. As the different tribes and communities have intermingled, they have left their mark on the city, adding architectural richness to it. For religion plays a vital part in any city's life. This is the first time that the history of London's faiths and beliefs has been recounted. This is not a book for academics, though it is deeply researched and may throw light on matters not always understood. It is a readable history for those who enjoy exploring the world about them, coming to understand other Gods and the ways in which belief and prayer can differ. It will appeal to those interested in how historical development can alter the lives of a people and how religious affiliation changes history. From earliest times, when the Romans built their temple to Mithras, now reborn in the Bloomberg building near the Thames, the story follows religious changes in the city when monasteries were destroyed, a great cathedral burned, new churches were built and London almost disappeared under enemy bombardment. Ancient religions from the East have latterly made their home here. Modern ideas have taken root, and today London has a vibrant multi-faith community, its first woman Bishop, and beautiful buildings for worship in a multitude of different ways. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. 'Eradicating Ecocide highlights the need for enforceable, legally binding mechanisms in national and international law to hold to account perpetrators of long term severe damage to the environment. At this critical juncture in history it is vital that we set global standards of accountability for corporations, in order to put an end to the culture of impunity and double standards that pervade the international legal system. Polly Higgins illustrates how this can be achieved in her invaluable new book.' Bianca Jagger, Founder and Chair of Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation Advocate for Crimes Against Present and Future Generations In Eradicating Ecocide, international environment lawyer and activist Polly Higgins sets out to demonstrate in no uncertain terms how our planet is fast being destroyed by the activities of corporations and governments, facilitated by 'compromise' laws that offer insufficient deterrence. She offers a solution that is radical but, as she explains with great competence and experience, absolutely necessary. The recent Mexican Gulf oil spill is a compelling reminder of the consequences of unchecked ecocide. Higgins advocates the introduction of a new international law against Ecocide. It would become the 5th Crime Against Peace and would hold to account heads of corporate bodies that are found guilty of perpetrating ecocide. The opportunity to implement this law represents a crossroads in the fate of humanity; we can accept this one change and in doing so save our ecosystem for future generations, or we can continue to destroy it, risking future brutal war over disappearing natural resources. This is the first book to explain that we all have a commanding voice and the power to call upon all our governments to change the existing rules of the game. Higgins presents examples of laws in other countries which have succeeded in curtailing the power of governments, corporations and banks and made a sudden and effective change, demonstrating that her proposal is not impossible. Eradicating Ecocide is a crash course on what laws work, what doesn't and what else is needed to prevent the imminent disaster of global collapse. Eradicating Ecocide provides a comprehensive overview of what needs to be done in order to prevent ecocide. It is a book providing a template of a body of laws for all governments to implement, which applies equally to smaller communities and anyone who is involved in decision-making. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. In late 2019 the Corona virus emerged and spread quickly around the world. With it went the invisible virus of fear. No one knew how many of those who caught it would die, but the fear of death was in the air. Most of the world was locked down. No public figure asked or tried to answer the questions, at one time so deeply felt: 'Is death the end?' 'Is there an afterlife?' Perhaps they assumed the answers 'Yes' and 'No' respectively but, the author argues, those answers are not to be taken for granted. Unasked questions cause untold psychological trouble. The author tackles these questions in a direct, open way of interest to believers and non-believers alike. In fact he asks 'If you do not believe, do you wish there were an afterlife?' He acknowledges that he feels great sympathy with and respect for those who do not believe in the life of the world to come, and admits that he was once one such. In the book he explains frankly what he now believes and why. He argues that it is the most important question that any of us faces: Are we or are we not created by God to live forever, first in this world and then in His nearer presence in the life of the world to come? It is not a comfortable question to face, but which answer is true? The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Part of an eight-volume series providing short biographies of men and women from Roman to Victorian times, Who's Who in Early Medieval England spans the period 1066-1272, the period of the Norman Conquest, the murder of Thomas Becket, Magna Carter and Simon de Montfort. Though remote in time, its influence is still evident in the institutions of today. What in 1066 were disparate elements of Anglo-Saxon, Scandinavian and French had by 1272 coalesced into a realm distinctively and self-consciously English. The process was symbolised by the adoption by Henry III, the builder of Westminster Abbey, of Edward the Confessor as his patron saint and the accession in 1272 of his son Edward I, the first King of England with an English name since the conquest. This volume contains over 160 short biographies of men and women who played a prominent part in their time. Each entry places the subject in the context of their age and evokes what was distinctive and interesting about their personality and achievement. The biographies are arranged in a broadly chronological rather than alphabetical sequence so that the reader may easily browse from one contemporary to the next. Paperback. Zustand: Fair. Providing a step-by-step guide to the design and construction of a dolls' house, this book is aimed at the experienced carpenter and the complete beginner. It describes the principles and practice of the various steps involved: choosing the house, design, construction, assembly, decoration and embellishments. The text is kept simple and never leaves even the most inexperienced wood-worker in any doubt as to what he needs to do next. Starting with a photograph of a real building, the author (who is a country doctor, not a professional toy maker) shows how you can plan the outside and arrive at a layout for the interior, so that what you make is a miniture of the building of your choice. Dr Cole shows how all this was applied to one particular building, Charles Dickens' house in London. He provides a full list of all the measurements and a full scale design for the front of this house. A readable copy of the book which may include some defects such as highlighting and notes. Cover and pages may be creased and show discolouration.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. With immigration and asylum seekers high on the agenda of governments throughout Europe, the life story of Dr Teame Mebrahtu is a timely reminder of a positive side of what has become a contentious and potentially divisive issue. It is a truly remarkable and inspiring story.Dr Mebrahtu, born in the village of Adi Ghehad in the Eritrean Highlands, was a leading teacher trainer in his country but was forced to leave when his life was in danger in the 1970s. The book first traces his early life in Eritrea, then part of Ethiopia, his efforts to get an education - the first in his family to do so - his involvement in student demonstrations against the government of Emperor Haile Selassie, resulting in imprisonment, and his rise to become Director of the Asmara Teacher Training Institute amidst the political unrest and bloodshed of the Eritrean liberation struggle. He was an eyewitness to the moment Haile Selassie was deposed.During this time he had been developing his philosophy of teaching, first as a teacher then a teacher trainer, which was to mark the rest of his career. He firmly believes the welfare of students is an essential precursor to academic success. When his life came under threat, he managed to leave the country to study for a PhD at Bristol. Within a year of arriving he was ordered back to Addis Ababa by the Mengistu regime. Sensing his life was again in danger, he refused and applied for and was granted asylum. Although entitled to state benefits, he declined saying he had not earned them. Instead, he persuaded local schools to let him talk to pupils about Africa and the Africans bringing new understanding of those with a different culture. His popular talks won him a grant from the Rowntree Trust. While the Eritrean liberation war raged, he raised support for refugees fleeing the fighting and living in camps in Sudan. He visited the camps advising on schooling for the refugee children. Later he went to train teachers in the Zero School set up in caves in liberated parts of Eritrea, braving the Ethiopian MiGs. After obtaining his PhD, he joined the staff of the Bristol Graduate School of Education where, for 24 years, he became a respected senior academic and adviser to international students - many of whom went on to have leading roles in the education system of their countries. He has become a valued member of his local community. An acknowledged expert on multicultural education and the problems of refugees, he has provided advice and valuable insights from his own experience during the troubled history of Eritrea and whilst establishing a new life in Britain. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Good. World War II brought many poets and writers to Egypt where, in the intervals between active service or, in some cases, in the brief interludes between the fighting, they and many who had never written poetry before expressed the varied emotions they felt in verse. In 1943 some of these poems were published in Cairo in a slim volume entitled Oasis. This volume contains all the original poems plus: a selec tion of published poems by Keith Douglas, Sidney Keyes, Hamish Henderson, John Jarmain, John Pudney and many others whose poetry equally eloquently describes the Desert War and the feelings and beliefs of those who took part; a collection of hitherto unpublished poems, submitted in the hand-written or typed originals which has been passed around hand to hand in the desert; and some first-hand accounts by contributors to give the setting to the poetry. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. This book is a paeon of praise to Jerusalem, holy city of three great religions. According to the sages of the Talmud, ten measures of beauty were given to the world and nine of them alighted upon Jerusalem. Drawing on 4000 years of history, Eliane Wilson has sought the soul of this ancient city through the words of kings and prophets, chroniclers and poets, travellers and pilgrims. The words and artist Motke Blum's powerful vision are bound together in a passionate dialogue, each medium inspiring and reflecting the beauty of the other in a quest for the essence of Jerusalem, the city whence Judaism, mother faith of Christianity and Islam, bequeathed mankind the concept of ethical monotheism and the rule of moral law, fulfilling itself in a law of love. The book is a search for the sound and fabric of the living city set amidst the Judean hills. It expresses the spiritual and physical bond between Jews and Jerusalem, a bond unbroken since David, 3000 years ago, made her the capital and the religious centre of the Hebrew nation. It records too the love and veneration of Christians for the city where Jesus wept and the reverence of Moslems for the city of the sacred Dome of the Rock from which the Prophet Mohammed ascended to heaven. Jerusalem and her people have not escaped suffering - again the sages tell us ten measures of suffering were given to the world and nine alighted upon Jerusalem, the city whose name means peace. Paperback. Zustand: Good. Marnes, Frederick (illustrator). When he was killed in action, Edward Tomas was mourned as an essayist, biographer and one of the foremost critics of his time, but his reputation as a poet had not yet been established. The discovery of his talent for poetry, sparked off by his meeting with the American poet Robert Frost on the eve of the First World War, was a turning point in his life. After sixteen years of frustration and self-doubt as a writer of prose, he had found a new and more confident voice, and the outbreak of war brought release from the demand for reviews and commissioned work so that he was free to write as he felt moved. A fine biographical essay by Elaine Wilson introduces the 80 poems chosen to reflect the poet's deep love of England and his affinity with nature. The beauty of the words have been enhanced by the fine calligraphy and sensitive pencil drawings of Frederick Marns. The endpapers reproduce the memorial windows at Steep and Eastbury, engraved by Laurence Whistler, dedicated to Edward and Helen Thomas. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Part of an eight-volume series providing short biographies of men and women from Roman to Victorian times, Who's Who in Early Hanoverian Britain spans the period from the death of Queen Anne in 1714 to the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789. These 75 years witnessed two Jacobite risings, the evolution of cabinet government, major additions to the British Empire despite the loss of the American colonies, and at home the stirrings of radical reform - it was the age of The Enlightenment. This volume contains over 190 short biographies of eminent personalities: the range is extensive, embracing royalty, politicians, philosophers, poets, artists, writers and inventors. Each entry places the subject in the context of their age and evokes what was distinctive and interesting about their personality and achievement. The biographies are arranged in a broadly chronological rather than alphabetical sequence so that the reader may easily browse from one contemporary to the next. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Taylor, William (illustrator). This book is Anna Blair's second gathering up of the reminiscences of elderly Glasgow people. It became apparent after the success of her Tea at Miss Cranston's that there remained a large untapped reservoir of reminiscences to draw on, demonstrating the richness and variety of Glasgow life. So, once more Anna Blair set out to record the early memories of Glasgow's older citizens. Their recollections are arranged, as before, by subject matter, with linking narrative by Anna Blair. Bill Taylor, whose pen and ink drawings were featured in Tea at Miss Cranstons, has produced 28 more for this book. Anna Blair introduces the book with a short biography of Kate Cranston whose tea rooms were designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Marsilio Ficino (1433-99) directed the Platonic Academy in Florence, and it was the work of this Academy that gave the Renaissance in the 15th century its impulse and direction. During his childhood Ficino was selected by Cosimo de' Medici for an education in the humanities. Later Cosimo directed him to learn Greek and then to translate all the works of Plato into Latin. This enormous task he completed in about five years. He then wrote two important books, "The Platonic Theology" and "The Christian Religion", showing how the Christian religion and Platonic philosophy were proclaiming the same message. The extraordinary influence the Platonic Academy came to exercise over the age arose from the fact that its leading spirits were already seeking fresh inspiration from the ideals of the civilizations of Greece and Rome and especially from the literary and philosophical sources of those ideals. Florence was the cultural and artistic centre of Europe at the time and leading men in so many fields were drawn to the Academy: Lorenzo de'Medici (Florence's ruler), Alberti (the architect) and Poliziano (the poet). Moreover Ficino bound together an enormous circle of correspondents throughout Europe, from the Pope in Rome to John Colet in London, from Reuchlin in Germany to de Ganay in France. Published during his lifetime, "The Letters" have not previously been translated into English. Following the Pazzi Conspiracy of 1478, Florence was at war with both the Pope (Sixtus IV) and King Ferdinand of Naples. Prompted by the appalling conditions under which Florence suffered as a result of the war, Ficino wrote eloquent letters to the three main protagonists. In his three letters to Sixtus, who was the main architect of the war, Ficino states in magnificent terms the true work of the Pope - to fish in the "deep sea of humanity", as did the Apostles. King Ferdinand of Naples spent most of his life in intrigue, not only against other states, but also against his own barons. Yet, Ficino addresses him in the words of his father, the admirable King Alfonso. This extraordinary letter, written in the form of a prophesy, speaks of his son's destiny on Earth. "In peace alone a splendid victory awaits you., in victory, tranquility; in tranquility, a reverence and worship of Minerva" (wisdom). Negotiations for peace were in fact begun about five months later. In his letter to Lorenzo de 'Medici, Ficino presented, with dramatic clarity, the two sides of Lorenzo's nature. The letter may have prompted Lorenzo's bold visit to King Ferdinand's court and the ensuing negotiations for peace. In insisting on the reality of unity and peace in the face of war and division, Ficino uses a number of analogies. He speaks in at least two letters of all the colours emerging from simple white light, just as all the variety of the universe issues from one consciousness. "For the Sun, to be is to shine, to shine is to see, and to illuminate is to create all that is its own and to sustain what it has created.". The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.
