Presentation copy to "Mr. and Mrs. C. V. Starr with kind regards and compliments of Rosa Palmborg." Cornelius Vander Starr (1892-1968) "moved to Yokohama, Japan, and, by the age of 26, was working as a clerk with the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. Less than a year later, Mr. Starr moved on to Shanghai, where, in 1919, he established American Asiatic Underwriters-the first American-owned insurance agency in Shanghai. [He had] a diversified career as a journalist, a lawyer, an international businessman, a publisher and a philanthropist" (Columbia University Libraries).
