A legendary book dedicated to the aesthetics of Japanese art, assembled for the case of an exhibition in Rome of a Japanese collection that belonged to baron Okura. The book was a collective monograph on various types of Japanese painting that emphasized the essence of Japanese beauty. The value of the opus is a sum of contributors. The authors of the text were famous Japanese art historians, professors of the Imperial University, aristocrats, and early visitors to the West. The text is provided with the short bios of the writers with signatures and private stamps. The mastermind behind this absolute masterpiece was an Italian ambassador and secret agent Pompeo Aloisi (1875-1949), who served for fascist regime but successfully washed his reputation after the war. Baron Kishichiro Okura (1882-1963) was a Japanese entrepreneur and hotelier, member of a prosperous family. Text in Italian. 27x19,3cm. V+IX+160pp. Plates unnumbered. Printed on Japanese washi paper. With multiple b&w illustrations. Occasional foxes on the edges, but the contents are clear. Japanese fukuro-toji binding. Silk wrappers and exquisite hanagire.
