Important overview of Turkish trade, resources, infrastructure and municipal organisation by the diplomat David Urquhart (1805-1877). After two and a half years fighting in the Greek war of independence, Urquhart was invited to accompany Sir Stratford Canning to Istanbul in November 1831 as an advisor during negotiations to settle the Greek boundary. In 1832 Urquhart was sent to Albania to cultivate the support of Rechid Pasha, leading advisor to the Turkish sultan. Urquhart became a great supporter of Turkey, spending most of 1834 in the country, and encouraged the British government to ally with Turkey against Egypt. The present substantial book was written to inform the British political class of the possible commercial benefits of an Anglo-Turkish alliance. Some negligible discolouration in first few leaves, light wear to extremities. In very good condition and untrimmed. Scarce, particularly in original condition as here.l Goldsmiths' 27883. Contemporary boards. With lithographed map as frontispiece. Pages: XV, [1], 328 pp.

Enlarged second edition of a work on the sea battle at Cape St Vincent, by the English army officer and military historian John Drinkwater Bethune (1762-1844), "one of the most important eye-witness accounts of the battle, by a spectator rather than a participant" (NMM). The battle the took place near Cape St Vincent, Portugal, on 14 February 1797, when the British fleet under Admiral Sir John Jervis defeated the much larger Spanish fleet. The work honours Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805), whose contribution during the battle was essential, and the present edition is enlarged with some anecdotes from Nelson himself. The work opens with a preface, followed by a description of the battle. The appendix contains a list of killed and wounded marines, two lists with the names of the ships of the British and Spanish fleet, and 8 battle plans, showing the positions of the ships of both fleets during different hours of the battle. With traces of a removed bookplate on paste-down. Binding very slightly rubbed, slightly damaged at the top and bottom of spine. Internally in very good condition.l NMM V, 1765. With an engraved frontispiece with a portrait of Horatio Nelson, 3 wood-engraved vignettes and 8 lithographed full-page sea-battle plans. Pages: XII, 97, [3 blank] pp.
