Top Bristol photographer Stephen Morris has been out and about trying to catch up with Bristol's ever-changing graffiti - an anarchic scene so interesting that Destination Bristol has given it a tourist web page all its own. In all, he's captured more than 50 examples. Some walls have been commissioned, by schools, pubs, youth clubs and building sites. One superb example of commissioned graffiti is the flying bread and cakes on Herbert's bakery in Wellington Avenue, but the liveliest artwork is the unofficial, sprayed as it were on the run from arrest. Even the best is often quickly lost under fresh paint, good art obliterated by the mindless. And yes, Banksy is represented here. As a Pre-Raphaelite in the mid-century, he created glowing landscapes, famously the Stonebreaker of 1857 and The Val d'Aosta painted in the following year, which showed all the qualities of the Pre-Raphaelites, truthfulness to nature and almost obsessional attention to detail. He was at this time influenced by the teachings of John Ruskin, although their friendship was to end in some acrimony. There were to be other sides to John Brett and from the 1870s onwards he devoted much of his time to painting the sea and the coast of the British Isles, including, as this sumptuous book shows, the many faces and colours of Cornwall. Painting during long family holidays, he left over 200 known views of the coastline from Fowey in the east to Bude in the north. In thirty years, he recorded with Ruskinian precision and Pre-Raphaelite intensity of colour its varied beauties, revelling in the diverse moods of sea and sky, the golden sands and the majesty and grandeur of the Cornish cliffs. Graham Sutherland is perhaps best known as a Neo-Romantic landscape painter in the tradition of Samuel Palmer, for his great tapestry at Coventry Cathedral rebuilt after being blitzed in the second world war and a controversial (and later destroyed) portrait of Sir Winston Churchill. But he was also a prolific Official War Artist. He depicted blitzed houses in Londons East End and in Swansea, the destruction of industrial and commercial buildings, and documented the war-effort underground and in the heart of industrial Britain. This book illustrates the work he undertook in the Geevor tin mine in Cornwall and in the iron and steel foundries of South Wales. To paint the Cornish miners at work in dank and cramped conditions, for several weeks in 1942 he daily descended 1,300 feet in a high-speed bucket into the gloomy depths. Despite the tough reality he found there, he later confessed also to finding it a world of such beauty and such mystery that I shall never forget it. For most of his time at the Geevor tin mine Sutherland wrote and drew in a sketchbook just 9 inches by seven inches, concentrating into these compact pages a sequence of evocative images. The outcome is an astonishing collection of works on paper as well as worked up oil paintings of heroic images of men united in their endeavour, and as Sutherland put it ennobled under ground. The book contains a biographical review of the artists life and work; a chapter on the industrial links between Cornwall and South Wales and a survey of Sutherlands home front war paintings. There are 50 or so powerful but rarely seen drawings and sketchbooks from a private collection, finished paintings now in the Imperial War Museum and other public collections, and a number of dramatic archive photographs.
