L'histoire est suivie d'une comédie de Louis de Boissy, Le triomphe de l'intérêt (1694-1758), qui a été publiée pour la première fois à Paris en 1734, et qui adapte l'aventure de M. Reresby (1634 - 1689) was appointed Governor of York in 1682, and his memoirs are an important resource for studies of British history in the last part of the 17th century. Valuable and interesting account of the events of his time (1634-1689) by a cautious and time-serving politician with the happy knack of pleasing those in power and with a keen eye for his own advancement. First published 1734.

Modern bookplate, toned throughout, moderate foxing with some darkening to margins of early pages. Reresby (1634 - 1689) was appointed Governor of York in 1682, and his memoirs are a resource for studies of British history in the last part of the 17th century.

Head damaged with loss, foot rubbed, two corners bumped and an abrasion to the front board. A handsome copy. * David-François de Merveilleux (1652-1712) was secretary-interpreter to the French ambassador to Switzerland. Scarce. 'Sulaiman's works had a profound effect on many Arabic and Per…sian geographers and are of exceptional importance for the study of early Islamic trade. Sulaiman, an Andalusian Jew, probably based at Basra, made several voyages to China before 851. He visited the Maldives, Andaman Islands, Sri Lanka, Malacca, Saigon, Hainan, and Canton. Sulaiman's accounts were corroborated by the geographer Abu said Hasan of Siraf. They are also a source book for the settings of the tales of Sindbad' (Howgego). According to Renaudot, the account of events such as the great revolution which swept across China during their second voyage confirms that the journeys were undertaken four centuries prior to Marco Polo. Their travels took place in 851 CE and 877 CE, respectively. The text gives a lively account of life in China and India, with "the first foreign descriptions of tea and porcelain, and a whole panorama of Chinese society, from the Son of Heaven and Confucian ethics down to toilet paper and bamboo urinals" (Mackintosh-Smith). Une sign…ature sur la page de titre. Deslande est né à Pondichéry ou à Bandel en 1689, mort à Paris en 1757. Il est également l'auteur de "L'art de ne point s'ennuyer" et "Réflexions sur les grands hommes qui sont morts en plaisantant". Ce roman philosophique reprend à son compte la légende grecque du sculpteur Pymalion, tombant amoureux de l'une de ses propres statues. Des études récentes attribuent à cet ouvrage rare, qui fut condamné au feu dès 1742 (à Dijon) en raison de son caractère libertin, une place significative parmi la littérature matérialiste de son époque. Ce conte philosophique reprend la thèse spinoziste selon laquelle Dieu se confond avec la Nature et l'hypothèse empiriste de la matière pensante. ". Nous en nommerions l'auteur avec plaisir, & nous lui donnerions encore plus volontiers les éloges qu'il mérite ; mais sa modestie ne nous le pardonnerait pas. Il nous est seulement permis de le désigner sous l'idée générale de savant Homme, aussi bien que l'auteur de Pigmalion, qui, en ne nous laissant pas plus de liberté, s'est pareillement envié les justes louanges qui lui sont dues. Si le lecteur souhaite en savoir davantage, il faut qu'il employe sa curieuse sagacité pour découvrir ce que nous sommes contraint de lui cacher : c'est la seule voye qu'il puisse prendre pour se satisfair." (Avertissement de l'éditeur). Quoique dans une reliure moderne, bel exemplaire, grand de marge pour cet ouvrage rare.

L'ouvrage publié anonymemen…t une première fois en 1741, fut condamné au feu par arrêt du Parlement de Dijon du 14 mars 1742.« Pigmalion - oeuvre prohibée et clandestine - avait été quelques années auparavant précédée d?une ambitieuse Histoire critique de la philosophie, dont la première édition de 1737 avait été clandestine. La très forte densité philosophique de Pigmalion et les références implicites du texte à toute une culture épicurienne contemporaine invitent à expliciter le contenu « matérialiste » de ce texte, à l?intérieur de sa fable.Pigmalion est un texte trop méconnu dans l?histoire du « matérialisme » français au XVIIIe siècle. Antérieur au Traité des sensations de Condillac (1754), il propose une fable sur la nature, les propriétés et l?organisation universelle de la matière, puis sur l?apparition de la vie, de la sensation et de la pensée, sous le couvert d?un récit mythologique. L?originalité la plus frappante de ce texte réside certainement dans sa nature hybride : à la fois récit mythologique, apologie du mode de vie « libertin » ; à la fois essai scientifique et spéculation philosophique audacieuse. » (Anne Deneys-Tunney, Le roman de la matière dans Pigmalion ou la Statue animée (1741) d'A.-F. Boureau-Deslandes). André-François Boureau-Deslandes, philosophe et écrivain, est considéré comme l'un des prédécesseurs de La Mettrie. Né à Pondichéry d'un père directeur de la Compagnie des Indes orientales, il est l'auteur de plusieurs ouvrages dont L'Art de ne point s'ennuyer (1715) et Histoire critique de la philosophie (1737) ce dernier qui lui valut la reconnaissance des philosophes. Nombre de ses articles furent inclus dans l'Encyclopédie.Exemplaire truffé de deux portraits gravés de Pygmalion et Galatée en frontispice (non signé) et en regard du titre de départ d'après F.
