The first edition of this vanishingly scarce work.Original wraps are bound in.Part of Colman's dramatic library.'Tortesa the Usurer' is a romantic tragi-comedy, following a love triangle between a usurer, a young daughter of a Count, and a painter.Written in blank verse, this was a popular play for around a decade after its premier in Philadelphia, at the Walnut Street Theatre, on the 20th June 1839.Among this plays admirers was Edgar Allan Poe, who called it "by far the best play from the pen of an American author".Willis was a notable American author of the nineteenth century, writing both prose and poetry. He also worked as an editor, working with various eminent American figures of the day, including Edgar Allan Poe and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Early edition of the book that made the Rollo series big, intended to instruct the novice American reader by combining a mature vocabulary with a lively series of animal metamorphoses and moral lessons. The hapless and ungrateful Rollo made his first cameo appearance in the rare THE LITTLE SCHOLAR LEARNING TO TALK: A Picture Book for Rollo, by His Father, reissued in 1839 as ROLLO LEARNING TO TALK. ROLLO LEARNING TO READ is thus technically the second Rollo book, but the first "devoted wholly to Rollo" (Blanck) and is the title responsible for the series's popularity and influence. 6.25'' x 4''. Brown cloth stamped in blind and gilt, signed "Elles & Middlebrook, Binder" on each board. Owner name ("Howard N. Ticknor") on front fly. Binding worn with a bit of loss at the spine ends, one plate separated and another with a foredge tear, light scattered foxing and a portion of the text with a marginal dampstain at the bottom and foredges, sound but good only. Contains an engraved title page giving the publisher as "J. P. Giffing, successor to S. Coleman," followed by a letterpress title page stating "Published by Samuel Colman," both giving the date as 1840. Printed in Boston by Tuttle, Dennett, and Chisolm. An autobiographical story that includes Howitt's much-anthologized poem "The Wind is a Frolic." (N.B. One record in *OCLC* contains a note that states: "Added t.p.: dated 1839.") Lacking all but six plates (engraved title page, frontispiece facing this title page [paginated 144], and four in-text plates); according to *OCLC*, the copy at the American Antiquarian Society states "[24] leaves of plates," while the Free Library of Philadelphia's copy is stated to have "14 unnumbered leaves of plates" (589610588). *OCLC* seems to locate six titles with bindings signed by Elles & Middlebrook (plus we note one other in the inventory of the inventory of the Kenneth G. Leatch collection of bindings done by AAS in 1990), although they do not appear to be mentioned in Spawn and Kinsella's *American Signed Bindings Through 1876. …

Illustrated with a frontispiece depicting the Inauguration of Washington at the Old City Hall. INSCRIBED and SIGNED on the half-title page in ink: "Hon. Richard Fletcher/from/John Quincy Adams." Books inscribed by Adams are scarce. Typically one sees Adams's Oration on Lafayette signed on a separate slip pasted into the book. The first child of a president to become a president, the first president to be a published poet, and the first president to be photographed, Adams was certainly one of our most intelligent presidents and one of the greatest humanitarians to hold that office. He is perhaps best known for two accomplishments outside his term: the authorship as Secretary of State of the Monroe Doctrine and his heroic, successful argument before the Supreme Court to free the Amistad slaves. Richard Fletcher was a fellow member of the 25th Congress from Massachusetts with Adams. In his diary Adams recounts how Fletcher came under fire for criticizing the Ways and Means Committee for being under the control of the White House. Fletcher was widely quoted about his disdain for the committee, and Adams defended his colleague's views, coming under fire himself. Fletcher's outspokenness would eventually lead him out of Congress, and he later became a Massachusetts Supreme Court Justice.…

Edgar Allan Poe reviewed this early book of Longfellow's in the October 1839 Burton's Gentleman's Magazine and was not complimentary. He wrote that the book was "without design, without shape, without beginning, middle or end.what earthly object has this book accomplished?". The book was based on his pursuit of Frances Appleton who was also not complimentary. An interesting collection of poems, inspired by Palmer's adventures in the Antarctic as a member of the United States Exploring Expedition. Palmer was attached to the Wilkes expedition as acting surgeon and unofficial assistant naturalist, and spent much of his time aboard the schooners, Flying Fish and Peacock. "This charming work, derived from the United States Exploring Expedition of 1838-42, contains the earliest published Antarctic poetry, a literature form that did not appear again in a freestanding publication until the South Polar Times in 1907 . The Flying Fish achieved the highest latitude of any ship during the expedition, 70°4' S at 100°16' E, during the first season. The poem 'Thulia' (pp.13-38) concerns that first Antarctic season; the poem 'The Bridal Rose' (pp.53-8) concerns the second Antarctic season aboard the Peacock. The wood cut vignettes were exquisitely executed by one of the expedition's artists, A.T. Agate" (Rosove). The woodcuts illustrate their adventures locked in ice, among other things. An often overlooked Wilkes expedition item, and an important relation of the United States' earliest foray into the Antarctic region. This copy from the library of polar explorer Richard E. Scarce supernatural fantasy novel by Sara Coleridge (1802-1852), the only daughter of literary giant and poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834). The protagonist is visited by a spectre-like creature who introduces him to a parallel world. Many critics consider this work to be an early precursor to the modern fantasy novel; one critic in 2021 going so far as to dub it "the first fantasy novel."
