In den WarenkorbWrench was the son of a clergyman, and well educated and well connected (being presented to the Prince of Wales and staying at Chatsworth in his old age). His obituary in the British Medical Journal (27 April 1912), describes how, after service in the Crimea, 'he was transferred to the 4th Lancers, went to Madras with that regiment in the following month, and served with it during the whole of the Indian Mutiny. For his services in India he received the Indian medal and clasp for Central India. He returned to England in 1860, and married in 1861 his cousin, the daughter of Mr. William Kirke, of Markham Hall, Nottinghamshire'. The four items in the present collection are all in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The three duplicates - all closely and neatly written in a vivid and informative style - are among ones produced by Wrench for circulation within his family, there being copies in the collection of Wrench papers in Nottingham University Library. They comprise two letters and a narrative account. The typescript, by an unnamed individual, is not present at Nottingham. None of the four items is in the Imperial War Museum catalogue. ONE: Duplicate of Autograph Letter by Wrench ('Edwd M Wrench M.V.O - F.R.C.S. late asst Sugeon 12 R Lancers'). Dated at beginning 23 December 1907, and at end 'Christmas 1907 - Park Lodge Baslow Derbyshire'. The letter describes the 'Jubilee commemoration' at the Royal Albert Hall, and is headed 'My last Parade'. It begins: 'It was indeed well done (The dinner to the surviving Veterans who fought in the Indian Mutiny campaign in 1857, given by the proprietors of the London Daily Telegraph) a procession of heart stirring episodes from the Inspection by F.M. Lord Roberts on the steps of the Albert Memorial (where I found private Meredith of the 24th who was with me in the trenches at the assault on the Redan Sebastopol June 18 1855) to the surging chorus by the thousands in the Albert Hall of Auld Lang Syne, near the end of what Lord Curzon in his thrilling speech said was a "ceremony" rather than a festival, a speech that made the tears tremble on my eyelids. They overflowed at the solemn sounding of the "last post" recalling to my memory in the words of the poet, O Hara, a charge of the 12th Lancers I rode with at the battle of Banda [.]'. He names others present, including 'Col Robertson [.] he was still the bravest of the brave, for though 86, he was in velvet Levee dress, silk stockings & pumps, without a great coat. (He told me he was a teetotaller) his picturesque appearance attracted Lord Roberts eye, and drew a heavy fire on us, not of rifles, but of snap shot cameras, the result of which has been my portrait in such good company, scattered by the hundreds of thousands in The Daily Mirror of Decr 24 [.] I have looked down the barrel of a loaded musket, near enough to see a Sepoys yellow eyes taking aim at the butt end and ridden with cannon balls hopping over my head like balls in a cricket ground, I cannot compare my perils during the Sepoy Mutiny to many others of the Kirke family'. 2pp., 8vo. TWO: Duplicate of Autograph Letter by Wrench ('Ed M Wrench'). Dated at beginning 'Park Lodge Baslow Aug 1909' and at end 13 September 1909. 3pp., 8vo. The letter begins: 'Having recently discovered that General W A Franks [Major-General William Astell Franks (1838-1929)] now living at Northland Road Southampton, was present when Uncle Henry Kirke died when fleeing from the Mutineers of his Regt. 12 BNI in 1857, I took the liberty of writing to him, he very kindly responded to my enquiries & I feel sure the information he has afforded will be interesting, adding much to our scanty knowledge of that terrible time.' There follow extended transcriptions from Franks's letters: '[.] I saw him the day he died [.] he was on his horse but rolling about on it [.] he looked at me with a vacant stare & was deadly pale. I could see he was dying. Shortly after he fell off his horse, he was the only one of o. …

In den WarenkorbEdward Knobloch's play 'My Lady's Dress' ('in which', as one newspaper wrote at the time, 'the heroine's dream takes her to the foreign [and London] scenes surrounding the manufacture of a costly gown') premiered at the Royalty Theatre in London in 1914 and was revived several times through the 1920s. Although neither of these photographs is among the five Foulsham & Banfield portraits of Cooper in the National Portrait Gallery collection, the second one (Cooper and Eadie embracing) is present among the seven unattributed scenes from the 1914 production in the Victoria & Albert Museum collection ('Given to the Gabrielle Enthoven Collection by L.E. Berman'). Both of the present items are black and white gelatin silver prints. Dimensions are approximate. ONE: Cooper seated on a chair in front of a window and beside a table, hands clasped in her lap, looking mournfully at the viewer, in dotted smock worn over plaid dress, with lace collar and crocheted Welsh-style shawl. HEIGHT: 30.5 cm. WIDTH: 21 cm. In fair condition, lightly aged, with slight wear and chipping at edges, and one very small closed tear at head, beside '5/-' which appears to be part of the print. Written in pencil on reverse: 'Miss Cooper as Annette / Act I. Sc 3.' Also label with ink note: 'My Lady's Dress / Royalty / Feb 27 1914' and the stamp of Foulsham & Banfield, 49 New Bond Street. TWO: The Victoria and Albert description reads as follows: 'Photographic print of Act III, Scene 3, of a production of My Lady's Dress at the Royalty Theatre, 23rd April 1914. The photograph features a full length image of Miss Cooper as Anne and Mr Eadie as John they are standing together, embracing, and are gazing towards one another.' He wears a dressing gown and she is in a rather splendid Pre-Raphaelite-style dress. Height: 26.5 cm. Width: 20.5 cm. Adhering to the reverse are the remains of a grey paper mount, and no details are given. In good condition, lightly aged. See Image.…

In den WarenkorbAn apparently-unique Manuscript signed by Lord Stanley as Secretary of State for War and the Colonies, and dated from 'Downing Street, | 30: July 1842' of what W. P. Morrell describes in his 'British Colonial Policy in the Age of Peel and Russell' (1966) as a 'Circular Dispatch to Governors of West Indian Colonies', regarding the 'Act to amend the laws for the regulation of the Trade of the British Possessions abroad' (5 & 6 Vic. c. 49). The document discusses the act with regard to 'the West Indian Colonists' and 'the British Possessions in South America and the West Indies'. Stanley hopes that 'the Legislative Bodies, and the Colonists at large in the West India Colonies' will find in the act 'enactments calculated to be of essential advantage to their commerce'. The present draft contains a passage with a gap in it for later completion, in which Stanley requests the recipient to 'take the first opportunity of communicating copies of this Act to [BLANK] under your Government'. (Different versions were tailored to the various colonies; another one, printed severally in 1843 in the Journals of the Legislative Councils of the Provinces of New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, is dated to 17 August 1842 and addressed to Sir Charles Bagot, first Governor General of the Province of Canada. That version corresponds with the present draft for the first page and a half, and then diverges considerably in its emphasis and content.) The present item is disbound from a collection of parliamentary papers assembled by Sir Frederick Peel (1823-1906), Liberal MP for Leominster, who was Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies, 1851-1854; and Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies, 1854-1855. It is 7pp, foolscap 8vo. On two bifoliums. Paginated 29-35 by Peel, who has written 'Trade of British Possessions' at the head of the first page. In good condition, lightly aged. The document is in a secretarial hand, but is signed by Stanley: '/sd/ Stanley' (the '/sd/' was probably for the purpose of the printer, should the document be put into type). At the beginning of a long communication, Stanley explains that 'Her Majesty's Government having undertaken soon after their accession to office the revision of the laws by which the commerce of the United Kingdom is governed, felt it to be their duty to consider with equal care the regulations bearing upon the trade of the Colonies, and having in view the experience which had now been obtained of the legislation promoted by the late Mr Huskisson, and some of his successors in office, and being satisfied with its results, their object has been to give fuller effect to the spirit in which that legislation was conceived. They have applied themselves therefore to remove restrictions upon Colonial industry, to bring the provisions of the Imperial law more and more into accordance with the terms of the Declaratory Act of 1778 [] The Act now sent to you is the fruit of these endeavours and I trust that the Legislative Bodies and the Colonists at large in the West India Colonies will find in it enactments calculated to be essential advantages to their commerce, to be of effectual advantage as consumers of imported goods.' The present draft concludes: 'With a view to give time to the local Legislatures to make any arrangements which shall appear to them to be expedient previously to the commencement of the new Act, its operation is postponed by the 1st. Section, so far as the British Possessions in South America and the West Indies are concerned, to the 5th. April, 1843.' (In the version published in 1843 quoted above, the postponement is made, 'so far as the British Possessions in North America are concerned, to the 5th July, 1843'.) Goods involved include wheat, meat, tea, blubber linen, leather, etc etc.…
