The writer was born in Eastern Africa. Early in his career as a journalist he trained and worked as a sub-editor at the Newcastle Chronicle and Journal newspapers, in North-East England. He was also a Press Fellow at Wolfson College, University of Cambridge, UK. His professional development included stints as Features Editor at the Daily Nation and East African Standard newspapers in Nairobi, Kenya, and later Managing Editor, The Standard, Kenya.
