Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Artistic Duplicity challenges the traditional status of Juliana Ewing in literary history as an author solely of children's writings. This book presents Ewing as a sophisticated conscious artist whose work deserves to be considered seriously by adult readers who value skill and profundity. Although she writes in a style often accessible to children of somewhat advanced reading ability, she possessed the extraordinary gift of addressing at the same time a more mature audience, conveying thereby not a simple moral but complex and striking ideas. Each chapter is divided into two sections, the first part a commentary on a particular work in the context of her life and writing career with special attention to her abilities that mark her as a sophisticated craftswoman of fiction and poetry and the second part the text of that work. The commentary for the final chapter covers five poems followed by the texts of those poems. The book is, then, an unusual combination of a scholarly study of a literary figure and a collection of ten writings by that author. As a scholarly book, it is based on original research and makes a notable contribution to the study of Ewing not merely as an author of children's literature but as a writer of mature, complex, skillful, and often profound works.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Discover the story of the English Church from its earliest times to the present day. Having taken root in the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, it emerged in the medieval world amidst poverty, pandemics and power struggles, and not free from abuses. We see here its struggles during the Reformation, leading to an English Bible and Prayer Book, and the virtual banishment of Roman Catholicism for three hundred years. We see the spawning of new forms of Protestantism, inimical to the Crown, with the emergence of Quakers, Independents and the Methodists among many others. Following the ending of the Slave Trade in 1807, the Church became a force for both social change and spiritual endeavour in the Victorian period.Patrick Whitworth charts both the contribution and shortcomings of the English Church. An extraordinary story well told, surely this will remain the standard work on the Church in England for many years to come.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Henry Baker Tristram was a surprising and remarkable man: explorer, ornithologist, and priest. With his wild beard (for which he required special permission from his bishop) he undertook expeditions to the Sahara and Palestine at a time when doing so was even more fraught with danger than it is today. As a founding member of the British Ornithologists' Union (BOU), he contributed regularly to its journal, Ibis, as well as other scientific journals. Tristram's nickname in the BOU was 'Sacred Ibis'.Tristram was a collector par excellence, acquiring extensive collections running to tens of thousands of specimens, primarily of birds, but also of plants, fish, mammals, insects, molluscs, geological samples and archaeological material. He was the first scientist to support Charles Darwin in print, and became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1868 supported by his great friend Alfred Newton as well as Darwin.Professor J. B. Cragg, an eminent Zoologist at Durham University, described Tristram as 'the most important biological scientist to have emerged from Durham.' Tristram took part in the famous 'Oxford debate' between Bishop Wilberforce of Oxford and Thomas Huxley. This led to the unfortunate and incorrect assumption that Tristram subsequently gave up his support of Darwin. This book follows Tristram's epic adventures and love for birds-from his boyhood on the moors of Northumberland to his time as a Residentiary Canon of Durham Cathedral-and the people that influenced him-from his dislike of Gladstone whom he met as a fresher in Oxford to the offer of the Bishopric of Jerusalem by Disraeli (which Tristram declined). In the book are over 80 colour plates and a reproduction of Darwin's first letter to Tristram.£5 from each sale of the hardback edition of Sacred Ibis will be donated to the Grey College Trust. Perhaps Tristram's greatest contribution to science was his Fauna and Flora of Palestine. On his deathbed he wrote to his great friend Alfred Newton-who stood down temporarily from his Fellowship of the Royal Society so that Tristram might be elected-thanking him for his friendship. He and Newton had been a great ornithological partnership and were responsible not only for the development of ornithology as a science but also for the establishment of the conservation movement. Not everyone these days will approve of his collecting activities, but this is what he did and what was necessary to the development of science in Victorian times. Had the big majority of present-day biologists lived in those times they would undoubtedly have acted similarly, but few would have been so successful. As his granddaughter wrote, Tristram may not have been a great churchman, but he was a great ornithologist.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Twickenham is chiefly known today as the home of rugby, but its heyday could be said to be in the eighteenth century when first Alexander Pope and then Horace Walpole made it their home and extolled its Arcadian setting.Captain Gray, a naval officer, acquired plots of land close to the river in Twickenham in 1718 on which he built two rows of houses, Sion Row and Montpelier Row, which survive to this day and are much admired. This book tells the story of Sion Row, which was built for Gray by a remarkable local craftsman, Edward Reeves, who had ambition to become an architect. It explains the features of the houses and how they were built. It then follows them through to the present day showing how they were used and what modifications have been made to them and, not least, how they survived. In parallel we learn of the owners and the residents, many of whom have fascinating stories to tell. They are immensely diverse, some international, some purely local, some disreputable, others pillars of respectability.Their lives are put in the context of changes in Twickenham as it evolved from out of town retreat to prosperous commuter suburb. In telling the story of these houses and people, a remarkable social history is revealed.…
