In den WarenkorbSecond (Abridged) Edition; First Edition. in contemporary speckled calf, foot of spine chipped, some light surface wear to spine and extremities, red morocco label lettered in gilt. Two works in one volume, 8vo, (203 x 115mm), pp. History: vii, [i], [9]-266, [2] advertisements; Thoughts: 167, [1], First edition of a wide-ranging… discussion of civil liberty by John Brown, an Episcopalian moralist whose father had been ordained by a nonjuring Scottish bishop. Born in Northumberland, the family moved to Cumberland shortly after his birth when his father was presented with the living at Wigton. Educated at the grammar school there, Brown was admitted to St. John?s, Cambridge in 1732 where his contemporaries included Soame Jenyns, John Gay and David Hartley. Brown rose to fame with An Estimate of the Manners and Principles of the Times, 1757, an outspoken attack on the ?vain, luxurious and selfish EFFEMINACY? of England?s ruling class, which ran to numerous editions and gained him the sobriquet ?Estimate Brown? These two works were written towards the end of Brown?s life, when he was vicar of St. Nicholas, Newcastle upon Tyne. The first work is an abridged version, without the section on music, of his A dissertation on the rise, union and power, the progressions, separations and corruptions of poetry and music, 1763, described by ODNB as ?a pioneering work of conjectural history reminiscent of the Scienza nuova, though it is doubtful that Brown was familiar with Vico?s work? Starting with a discussion of melody, dance and poetry ?in the savage state?, Brown goes on to explore the origins of Hebrew, Indian, Chinese and Peruvian poetry and discusses at some length the development of various kinds of poetry in ancient Greece as well as in other European countries. An advertisement leaf after the title informs the reader: ?It is thought proper to inform the Purchasers of the ?Dissertation on the Rise, Union, &c. of Poetry and Music,? that the Substance of this Volume is contained in That; which is now thrown into the present Form, for the Sake of such classical Readers as are not particularly conversant with Music? In his Thoughts on Civil Liberty, Brown compares Great Britain with Sparta, Athens and Rome. His remarks on education, principally in using the example of Sparta as a justification for state-funded education, infuriated Joseph Priestly, who published two attacks on Brown?s work: An essay on a course of liberal education for civil and active life. With plans of lectures on I. The Study of History and general Policy. II. The History of England. III. The Constitution and Laws of England. To which are added, remarks on a code of education, proposed by Dr. Brown, in a late treatise, intitled, Thoughts on Civil Liberty, London 1765 and, a couple of years later, An Essay on the First Principles of Government, London 1768. ESTC t101765 & t789.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, duplicated typewriting. 4to. 139, (6, ads) pp. [rectos only]. Illustrated with an original albumen photograph, numerous facsimiles, maps, illustrations in text. Howes D-41. Phillips, p. 93: "A loquacious description, partly humorous, of a hunting trip in Idaho in the Pend d'Orielle region. Bears and deer." Not in…Heller. Eberstadt 115, 517: "Daly and his companions had an interesting and adventurous time of it in the northern Idaho wilderness. Interspersed throughout the narrative are stories told at the camp fire by the party's guides, 'Idaho' Bob and 'Peace River' Bill. These recount adventures and experiences on the plains, among Indians and game from the 70s onward." Decidedly uncommon in trade, with but a single copy sold at auction during the past 35 years, that one, rebound, in 1992 (ABPC, 1976-2012). Some closed tears in title (no loss), some soiling, a very good copy of a fragile book. Original tan printed wrappers (detached, spine defective), stapled. Housed in a custom dark green cloth folding box, with chemise. (#6921). The work is presented on the front cover as "The Original MSS" as rejected by Messrs Harper Century Scribner, reprinting a letter (on publisher stationery) declining to publish a work "so representative of the 'rowdy west'." Mark Twain is universally regarded as a pioneer in being the first author to have a manuscript typed on a typewriter ("Life on the Mississippi," 1882), but there were others using the new machine as well. In addition to its place in Western Americana and sporting history, "For Love and Bears" is of interest in demonstrating how quickly the notion of a typewritten "original manuscript" took hold, and in being an early example of a published work with the appearance of a typescript. The author, Frank S. Gray, as "James Daly," is noted in Wright (III) as the author of "The Little Blind God on Rails: A Romaunt of the Gold Northwest" (Chicago, 1888), but the present work is not there.

Raised bands bordered in gilt to spine, red leather spine label in gilt ('COLLIER ON THE STAGE'), publication date to foot. Historical restoration to title page and marking ('4C') to front pastedown, extensive foxing throughout, but a well preserved, tightly… bound copy. First edition. Godfrey Bosville's copy, with his ownership signature to [iii]. The theologian, puritan and theatre critic Jeremy Collier [1650-1726] believed it was the duty of theatre to defend societal norms and traditional values, to praise virtue, and to glorify God. He said so, long and loud, in his Short View of the Profaneness and Immorality of the English Stage (1698). The Restoration playwrights begged to differ, battle lines were drawn, and war by pamphlet duly broke out. After a battering from the playwrights themselves (Sir John Vanbrugh chief among them) Collier published this defence of his position -- and largely won the day. For most of the eighteenth century the British stage was colonised by the anodyne and sentimental; only with the advent of Goldsmith and Sheridan in the 1770s would licentiousness and laughter return. This copy bears the ownership signature of Godfrey Bosville [1654-1714], High Sheriff of Yorkshire [1704-5]. Wing C5248.

An important work giving insight into the reception of English drama in the context of seventeenth-century morals and religiosity. The main focus of the essay is the dramatists of Collier's own day, particularly John Dryden, as well as William Congreve, John Vanbrugh, and Thomas D'Urfey, but earlier playwrights do not escape his focus, including the Bard: 'As for Shakespeare, he is too guilty to make an Evidence: But I think he gains not much by his Misbehaviour; He has commonly Plautus's Fate, where there is most Smut, there is least Sense'. Ben Johnson on the other hand 'is much more reserve in his Plays, and declares plainly for Modesty in his Discoveries' (p.50). Although a frontispiece is called for this the third edition by ESTC, the offsetting of the title-page to the front free endpaper verso suggests out copy was bound without this plate. Nor is a frontispiece called for in any of the earlier or later seventeenth-century editions of this work. ESTC R13037.

Maurice marèchal de Saxe was one of the most heralded generals of the Ancien regime and was responsible for a string of French victories during the reign of Louis XV, not least the battle of Fontenoy (of 1745)…in which his forces defeated a coalition of English, Austrian and Dutch troops. This book, attributed to him, though published posthumously is actually the work of his lieutenant général, Ricouart d'Hérouville. It uses the armies of ancient Rome as a yardstick for measuring the French army in its effectiveness, especially in the recruiting and training of soldiers. Immediately translated into English, it was influential on both sides of the Atlantic; a copy of this edition was notably owned by George Washington. The verso of the title-page advertises a simultaneously-issued work: The History of Maurice Count Saxe. (also Osborne, 1753). The two works are distinct, but owners (including Washington, it would appear from the Library of Congress Catalogue) sometimes had them bound as a single 3 volume work. 12mo (162 × 95 mm), pp. [4], 197, [1], plus 3 letterpress and 1 engraved folding plates at end. Slight browning and dampstaining, the final plate with closed tear at gutter. Contemporary sprinkled calf, red morocco spine label. Rubbed, label worn. A good copy. [Scarce; not in the BL catalogue. ESTC lists copies at Cambridge, Bodley, Hull and Niedersachsische Staats- und Universitatsbibliothek in Europe and Royal Military College, Society of the Cincinnati and Library of Congress in North America. OCLC adds Cornell, Boston Athenaeum and Rutgers University.].

In English. - Stafleu and Cowan, Taxonomic Literature 2769; Nissen, Die botanische Buchillustration 881; Pritzel, Thesaurus Literaturae Botanicae 4063; etc. - Hill was a critic of the Linnaean binomial nomenclature as published in the Species Plantarum in 1753. In The British Herbal he did not consistently follow the new taxonomic system, the book contains a number of pseudo-binomials. However, the generic names are designated as such and must be accepted for botanical nomenclature. Hill`s criticisms of Linnaeus, however, were not all of an adverse nature. Often he did not stint his praise, and he did not fail, after describing each Genus, to mention its position in the Linnaean System. Although opposed to the Linnaean system, to Hill falls the credit of introducing it into England. Rubbed, corners little bumped. Re-backed and flying end papers renewed a longer time ago. On end papers previous owner`s name and removed exlibris. Small tears at the leaf with frontispiece (distant to the plate) and with plate 41 (distant to the plate). Old water stain at lower and inner margin of frontispiece, hardly affecting the plate. Title little dusty. Text with numerous numbers of corresponding plates by very fine old hand. Drawings on plates I - VII numbered by hand. Otherwise no entries, nearly no browning (only last plates little browned), no spotting. Binding strong and tight.
