[4] (Half-title and title page), CXLI (Preface, Introductory Discourse, Postscript), [1] (Publisher's advertisement), [2], 232 (Text), [20]pp (Index). 19th-century black- and blind-stamped full calf, with gold lettering to spine. Raised bands. Mired in controve…rsy and disputes, and with a reputation as an unbeliever, English clergyman Conyers Middleton (1683-1750) triggered one of the biggest theological controversies of the 18th century with this book upon the miraculous powers attributed to the Christian church. The author first published an 'Introductory Discourse' in 1747 (featured in pages XXVII (37) to CXIII (113)), followed up by a fuller treatise at the end of 1748. "A Free Inquiry Into the Miraculous Powers" denied the credibility of the stories of miracles in periods subsequent to the first age of the church, attacked the character of the narrators, and explained the origin of the narratives by the general credulity of the times in which they arose. Binding rubbed along edges, with some abrasion to leather on spine. Closed tears along joints, but covers still firmly attached. Stamp of the University of California Riverside on inside of front cover, and at top and bottom edge. Binding in overall fair, interior in very good condition.

First edition of Whaley's second and final book, dedicated to Horace Walpole. Of particular interest here is a topographical poem called 'A Journey to Houghton, the seat of the right hon. Robert Walpole'; also included are…translations and imitations of Horace, Tibullus, and Theocritus. As in Whaley's earlier collection, there are no fewer than nineteen poems by Sneyd Davies ('by a friend'), who is said to have contributed them as an act of charity to a friend in financial difficulties. Also included is 'To Alexander Pope, Esq. on his Essay on Man', identified as having been contributed 'by the Rev. Mr. P. L.'. One further poem, 'Abelard to Heloisa', is simply described as 'by a lady'. The Bowyer Ledgers indicate that 750 copies of this book were printed. Foxon p. 888; Case 448; Hazen, Walpole, p. 170. Provenance. Early armorial bookplate of Sir William Beauchamp Proctor (1722-1773), of Langley Park in Norfolk; recent signature of Margaret Morgan.

In den WarenkorbFull Calf. Zustand: Fine. Eleventh Edition, complete in eight volumes, of this espionage saga admired by Defoe, who published Continuation of Turkish Letters Writ by a Turkish Spy in 1718. 12mo(162 x 96mm): xxvi,[6],viii,[10],312; [24],276; [22],287,[1]; [22],288; [22],276; [22],264; [14],248; [18],280pp, with copper-engraved fr…ontispiece of "Mahmut the Turkish spy" to volume one. Full speckled English calf, spines in six compartments divided by raised bands, covers framed with gilt rules and floral roll in blind, red morocco letter-pieces gilt, edges speckled red. A superb set, in a handsome contemporary binding, securely bound and clean throughout. ESTC citation no. T91588. Blackmer 210. Moore 406. Volume One, by Marana, a Genoese political refugee to the French court of Louis XIV, is a translation of a manuscript in the Bibliothèque Nationale, in Paris, and originally published in parts in 1684, in French as l'Espin du Grand Seigneur and in Italian as L'esploratore Turco. Translated into English by William Bradshaw in 1687 under the supervision of Robert Midgley, who held the copyright. The remaining seven volumes appeared first in English, between 1691 and 1694, prefaced with a letter claiming their translation from a discovered Italian manuscript. Their authorship has been attributed to various writers, most notably Midgley and Bradshaw. The letters, written by one "Mahmut the Arabian," cover the period of 1637 to 1682 in France, from the last years of the Regency of Anne of Austria and Cardinal Richelieu through the long reign of Louis XIV and his minister Cardinal Mazarin. Taken together, they form a rambling journal of gossip on politics and society. Mahmut's observations range from those on political figures such as Richelieu and Mazarin to speculations on the status of women, advice about state policy, and major interventions in controversies about religious doctrine and their consequences. The series launched a literary genre, the pseudo-foreign letter, of which Montesquieu's Lettres persanes and Goldsmith's Chinese Letters are examples. Daniel Defoe admired the spy's deist rationalist sympathies, and extended the narrator's account from 1682 to 1693 in his Continuation of Turkish Letters Writ by a Turkish Spy in Paris (but see Furbank & Owens, p. 8). A Natural and Historical Account of the Islands of Scilly; Describing their Situation, Number, Extent, Soil, Culture, Produce, Rarities, Towns, Fortifications, Trade, Manufacture, Inhabitants. Their Government, Laws, Customs, Grants, Records, and Antiquities. The Importance of those Islan…ds to the British Trade and Navigation; the Improvements they are capable of; and Directions for all Ships to avoid the Dangers of their Rocks. Illustrated with a new and correct Draught of those Isles from an actual Survey, in the Year 1744, including the neighbouring Seas, and Sea-Coasts, next the Land's End of Cornwall. To which are added, The Tradition of a Tract of Land, called Lioness, devoured by the Sea, formerly joining those Isles and Cornwall. Of the Cause, Rise, and Disappearance of some Islands. And, lastly, A general Account of Cornwall. By Robert Heath, an Officer of his Majesty's Forces, some Time in Garrison, at Scilly. Folding table of distances, folding plate of Upnor Castle in Kent, and folding map (early repairs to reverse of two small tears at folds). First Edition. 8vo. [207 x 129 x 31 mm]. [1]f, viii, xvi, xiii, [i], 456 pp. Bound c.1820 in diced calf, the covers with a gilt border of a thick and thin fillet and a frond and wave roll. Smooth spine divided into six panels by gilt fillets, lettered in the second, the third and fifth tooled to a lattice pattern, the others with a central ornament, the turn-ins tooled with a gilt roll, marbled endleaves, light blue sprinkled edges. (Rebacked preserving most of the original spine). Some minor spotting and a little dust-soiling but a very good copy of the first separately published account of the Isles of Scilly. Heath (d.1779) dedicated the work to the Duke of Cumberland, reminding him that the islands had been the property of his royal ancestors since the conquest of them by King Aethelstan. They may have been out of sight but were of enormous strategic importance and were calling out for attention and improvements. The map was drawn by Heath from a survey of 1744. The inclusion of a view of Upnor Castle in Kent is explained by the description of its fortifications overlooking the River Medway, and may have been an attempt by Heath to ingratiate himself with the Governor, Lieutenant General John Guise.

"Containing all his Writings, Except the Life of Cicero: Many of which were never before Published. With a complete Index to the whole." Conyers was university librarian for Cambridge. Here you will find his most important work "Introductory Discourses". His religious publications led and responded to much controversy. He questioned the historical accuracy of the Bible and advocated opening up the church to a broader spectrum of beliefs. Alexander Pope considered him a master of the language, and although some plagiarism in his work has been exposed, he has a lasting place of praise in terms of style and argument in the school of rationalist theology.

In den WarenkorbSecond (i.e., first available) edition, 3 volumes, 8vo, pp. xxi, [3], 360; [6], 399, [1]; [8], 416; original blue paper-covered boards, brown paper shelfback, printed paper labels on spine; light cracking and wear but generally very good and sound. Ownership signature of "Cambusmore" on the title pages. This is the first edition… to reach the public of Madame de Staël's most important work which introduced German literature, especially the Romantic poets, to French readers, and greatly influenced French writers throughout the 19th century. The book was first printed in Paris in 1810, but the entire edition, except for three proof copies ending with page 240 of the third volume was seized and destroyed on the orders of Napoleon who misunderstood it as a political work. In her preface to this London edition - the "de facto" first edition - De Staël wrote about the fate of her book and her expulsion from France. She explains the circumstances of the suppression: although the text had already been submitted and passed after certain excisions, the minister of police had all 10,000 copies destroyed on the grounds that the book was "un-French." Her impressions are based on two journeys through Germany in 1803-04 to Weimar and Berlin, and in 1807-08 to Munich and Vienna. The most important second part offers an almost complete literary history of the time of Goethe and Schiller, but the young romantic poets were especially close to her heart. No doubt she was influenced there by her travel companion August Wilhelm von Schlegel.
