In den WarenkorbOriginal royal quad, lithographic poster printed in colours on wove paper featuring artwork by Stephen Bone. A full, bright example with just the occasional scuff and horizontal and vertical fold line (as issued). Measuring 102 x 127cm. Laid on canvas (measuring 107 x 133cm). A superb original poster from the golden age of railway travel. Born in London, the son of the artist Sir Muirhead Bone, Stephen Bone (1904-1958) studied at the Slade School of Art from 1922 to 1924 under Henry Tonks. He achieved early success in book illustration, and in 1925 was awarded a gold medal for wood engraving at the International Exhibition in Paris. From 1936 to 1939, he served on the committee of the Artists' International Association, where he helped artists fleeing Nazi Germany establish new lives and careers in Britain. During the Second World War, he worked first as a civilian camouflage officer and later as an Official War Artist attached to the Royal Navy. In 1948, he became art critic for the Manchester Guardian. During the 1950s, he gained a wider public profile as a broadcaster, appearing regularly on the BBC radio programmes The Critics and The Brains Trust, as well as the long-running television series Animal, Vegetable, Mineral? He also wrote the Shell Guide to the West Coast of Scotland. In 1957, he was appointed Director of Hornsey College of Art, a position he held only briefly before his untimely death in London the following year.
