In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No Jacket, as Issued. First UK Edition. First UK edition, published 1924. Translated from the French by Catherine D. Groth. ***A very good example in charcoal paper over beige-coloured cloth-covered boards, with a paper label on the spine and front board. The label is very worn on the spine but is still quite clear on the front board, although darkened. However - please note - there is a beautifully preserved spare label set tipped in the back of the book (please see scans). The boards show some marks and rubbing commensurate with age and handling over the last 100 years, but are generally clean, with no significant faults. The spine is quite worn with rubbing to the cloth, but no tears or other damage. The edges and the corner tips of the boards are slightly rubbed. Head and tail of spine slightly frayed and rubbed. No reading lean to the binding, but there is a light vertical reading crease. Page block edges clean - untrimmed at the fore-edge and bottom edge. Internally also very good with no foxing to the pages. Pages clean. No creases or tears. With a previous owner's name - Barbara Steel - on the front free endpaper. There is no obvious weakness to the gutters between gatherings, and no splitting - the binding is holding firm. The paper stock used is nice and thick. A fragile but nicely produced inter-war book. No dustwrapper. ***208mm x 140mm. 159 pages including a 2pp Bibliography at the back of the book. ***'Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 Oct 1869 - 30 Jan 1948) was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist, and political ethicist who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British rule. He inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. The honorific Mah?tm? (from Sanskrit, meaning great-souled, or venerable), first applied to him in South Africa in 1914, is used worldwide. Assuming leadership of the Indian National Congress in 1921, Gandhi led nationwide campaigns for easing poverty, expanding women's rights, building religious and ethnic amity, ending untouchability, and, above all, achieving swaraj or self-rule.' ***'Romain Rolland (29 Jan 1866 - 30 Dec 1944) was a French dramatist, novelist, essayist, art historian and mystic who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1915 "as a tribute to the lofty idealism of his literary production and to the sympathy and love of truth with which he has described different types of human beings". He was an admirer of Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore, wrote a still relevant biography of Gandhi, and is also noted for his correspondence with numerous writers and thinkers across the globe including Maxim Gorki, Rabindranath Tagore and Sigmund Freud.' (Wiki) ***A very nice example of this fragile book. Of interest to those interested in the life of Mahatma Gandhi and the Colonial history of India. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
