In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. Violet Jessop's life is an inspiring story of survival. Born in 1887 in Argentina, the eldest child of Irish immigrants, at the age of 21 she became the breadwinner for her widowed mother and five siblings when she commenced a career as a stewardess and nurse on some of the most famous ocean going vessels of the day. Throughout her 40 year time at sea she survived an unbelievable series of events including the sinking of the TITANIC. One awful moment of empty, misty blackness enveloped us in its loneliness, then an unforgettable, agonizing cry went up from 1500 despairing throats, a long wail and then silence and our tiny craft tossing about at the mercy of the ice field. For most people one sinking would be enough. But four years later Violet, now a nurse with the British Red Cross, was on board the World War I hospital ship BRITANNIC when it struck a mine and sank to the bottom of the Aegean. To her, this disaster was even more horrifying-- Just as life seeming nothing but a whirling, choking ache, I rose to the light of day, my nose barely above the little lapping waves. I opened my eyes on an indescribable scene of slaughter, which made me shut them again to keep it out." By the end of her story we have a met a woman who could handle whatever life threw at her with determination and good humor. She knew that only by her own strength of character would she survive. But Titanic Survivor is much more. A unique autobiography for those who want to know how it really felt, a story that could be told only by a Titanic Survivor. In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. Jackie Robinsons story is not only a compelling drama of heroism, but also as a template of the African American freedom struggle. A towering athletic talent, Robinsons greater impact was on preparing the way for the civil rights reform wave following WWII. But Robinsons story has always been far more complex than the public perception has allowed. Brooklyn Dodgers executive Branch Rickey famously told the young Robinson that he was looking for a ballplayer with guts enough not to fight back. J. Christopher Schutz reveals the real Robinson, as a more defiant, combative spirit than simply the turn the other cheek compliant credit to his race. The triumph of Robinsons inclusion in the white Major Leagues (which presaged blacks later inclusion in the broader society) also included the slow demise of black-owned commercial enterprise in the Negro Leagues (which likewise presaged the unrecoverable loss of other important black institutions after civil rights gains). Examining this key figure at the crossroads of baseball and civil rights histories, Schutz provides a cohesive exploration of the man and the times that made him great. In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. Video games are big business. They can be addicting. They are available almost anywhere you go and are appealing to people of all ages. They can eat up our time, cost us money, even kill our relationships. But its not all bad! This book will show that rather than being a waste of time, video games can help us develop skills, make friends, succeed at work, form good habits, and be happy. Taking the time to learn whats happening in our heads as we play and shop allows us to approach games and gaming communities on our own terms and get more out of them. With sales in the tens of billions of dollars each year, just about everybody is playing some kind of video game whether it's on a console, a computer, a web browser, or a phone. Much of the mediums success is built on careful (though sometimes unwitting) adherence to basic principles of psychology. This is something thats becoming even more important as games become more social, interactive, and sophisticated. This book offers something unique to the millions of people who play or design games: how to use an understanding of psychology to be a better part of their gaming communities, to avoid being manipulated when they shop and play, and to get the most enjoyment out of playing games. With examples from the games themselves, Jamie Madigan offers a fuller understanding of the impact of games on our psychology and the influence of psychology on our games. In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. In 1939, young English naval signalman Geoffrey Holder-Jones began his career by surviving a German mine attack in the Thames estuary. World War II took him as naval officer to Iceland, the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, and the United States. Commissioned as a naval officer and given command of his own ship, Jones then patrolled the waters off Canada and Newfoundland before returning to Britain in 1944. This true story, written on the basis of personal conversations and a scrapbook entrusted to the author 60 years after the war, illuminates one of the great achievements of the war the beating of the German U-boat blockade of the American coast by squadrons of Allied ships that were little more than motley collections of armed trawlers and whalers. With a sense of humor and decency that sustained him through the ordeals of convoy duty in the Arctic Ocean, Signalman Jones has related his story to Tim Parker with vivid observations and an eye for the absurd. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. A significant examination of how athletes have fought for inclusion and equality on and off the playing field, despite calls for them to stick to sports. There is a common cry in many public discussions that athletes should just stick to sports, that sports and politics are somehow sealed off from one another, even while team owners, directors, managers, and entire leagues insist on using patriotic displays such as the playing of the National Anthem in order to project a sense of unity. The truth, however, is that unity in sports and American society is far from the reality, and that athletes have as much a right as anyone to fight for a more inclusive world. In Don't Stick to Sports: The American Athletes Fight for Inclusion, Derek Charles Catsam carefully explores this disparity. He examines how, throughout sports history, minority athletes have had to fight every step of the way for their right to compete, and continue to fight for equity today. From African Americans and women to LGBTQ+ and religious minorities, Catsam shows how these athletes have taken a stand to address the underlying injustices in sports and society despite being told its not their place to do so. While its impossible for a single book to tell the entire history of exclusion in sports in the United States, Dont Stick to Sports illustrates the ways in which both exclusion and the fight against that exclusion have helped to define a system that often claims to be based on meritocracy but has proven to be far from the truth. It is an accurate study of men and craft that have sailed form the small communities beside this broad estuary and river. It is a varied story where fishermen, bargemen, boatbuilders, sailmakers, wildfowlers and often smugglers join the sailing smacks and bages, brigs, bumkins and gunpunts in this workaday watery world. The great yachts are there too, and the local seamen who became captains and crews when summer cruising and racing, even to crossing the Atlantic in quest of the elusive America's Cup. Sailors of the sail, these men were of humble origin but proud of their skills and craft. Their traditions, independent outlook and everyday enjoyments have lingered to the present in the Blackwater's unique flavour of sail and oar. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Lengthwise folded, author's name underlined on cover, otherwise very clean. - From the text: The extraordinary exfoliation of English printings of the eclogues of Baptista Mantuanus ("Mantuan" in England since the Renaissance) that begins with Wynkyn de Worde's edition in 1523 might lead us to believe that it was by means of the Adulescentia, his collection of pastoral poetry, that Mantuan first established himself within the culture of sixteenthcentury England. But this is too simple a picture of the situation. For reasons often forgotten today, Mantuan's religious verse - in particular his hagiographic epics celebrating the Virgin Mary and (among other female saints) Margarita, Cecilia, and Catherine of Alexandria, and his De calamitatibus temporum, a three-book jeremiad attacking the waywardness of the times - had an enormous impact on readers at the beginning of the century.
