Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. ( H-BR55)"Focusing on Truth explores the question of what truth is, balancing historical discussion with issue-orientated discussion. The book offers a comprehensive survey of all the major theories of truth. Dr Johnson investigates a number of closely related matters of truth in his inquiry. What sorts of things are true or false? What is attributed to them when they are said to be true or false? What do facts have to do with truth? What can we learn from previous theories? The book opens with an analysis of the coherence theory of truth, and then the correspondence theory of truth, as developed by Moore, Russell and Wittgenstein. Through a study of the semantic questions of truth, the author reveals that an adequate theory of truth must take account of the pragmatics of person, purpose and circumstance. A full understanding of facts and truth bearers is considered central to Johnson's criticism of the opposing truth theories of J.L. Austin and P.F. Strawson. Drawing on the merits of these theories and others, while identifying their deficiencies, Johnson presents a new account of truth, based on the correlation of referential foci and the use of linguistic conventions. This account is defended as being adequate to meet the legitimate demands made on a theory of truth. It is argued that the account leaves scope for statements of many different sorts to be true in their own widely differing ways, without there being a need to posit fundamentally different kinds of truth." If feudalism meant no more in the eighteenth century than a few quaint customs that could tickle an audience at the Comedie Francaise, why did French writers attack it so furiosuly? The author suggests that contemporary writers saw the remnants of the feudal regime as aimportant less in themselves, than as symbols of an attitude of mind which the 'enlighted' among them would no longer tolerate. Instead of representing the ideas of the eighteenth century through the eyes of a few outstanding writers, the author had tried to reconstitute the intellectual climate of the ancien regine from the workd of largely unknown historians, jurists, economists and others. In this way he illuminates the rich tecture of eighteenth century French thought, without which the ideas of Voltaire, Montesquieu and even Rousseau lose much of their meaning. This study breathes life into the fierce controversies that shook the Age of Reason long before the outbreak of the Revolution. 215 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).

The present work examines the responses of the episcopal leadership of the Church in England and Wales to the transformation of the society to which they ministered. The study concentrates on the attitudes and policies of those prelates installed in the years before 1783, between 1783 and 1812, between 1812 and 1830, and finally between 1830 and 1852. Professor Soloway also examines their social connections, showing the predominantely aristocratic nature of the Church's leadership in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. He emphasises the importance of the role of these men in guiding, administering and reforming the established Church in a period of unprecedented economic and social change. 464 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This is a boxed set of six volumes that will require additional postage. List price - Amazon - $1,640.00. "One of the most interesting periods in the history of British linguistic thought, the 18th century is also one of the most neglected. Richer in diversity than the corresponding period in France, continental influences are still reflected. The inheritance of linguistic ideas from Graeco-Roman antiquity is prominent and there is considerable discussion on the theory of universal grammar. Growing interest in historical and comparative aspects of language study lead to the realization that Indo-European languages are very much related - a discovery with important cultural and religious implications. The definitive edition of each book has been selected for this collection. The six volumes include "Hermes of a Philosophical Inquiry Concerning Universal Grammar" (1786) by James Harris "The Diversions of Purley" (1829) by John Horne Tooke "A Course of Lectures on the Theory of Language and Universal Grammar" (1762) by Joseph Priestly "The Theory of Language" (1788) and "Of the Origin and General Nature of Speech Of Universal Grammar" by James Beattie and "A Dissertation on the Origin of Language" (1788) by Adam Smith".
