In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first printing, presentation copy, movingly inscribed by Leary to Laura Huxley, and to Aldous in memoriam, "To Laura & Aldous - Thanks for enriching my life, Timothy, Oct 95", inside the front wrapper. The inscription was penned 32 years after Aldous Huxley's death, clearly as an act of homage and fidelity by Leary to his friend, and one of his earliest and most fervent supporters. Huxley was one of the first popular writers to champion the use of psychedelic drugs, notably LSD, describing in great detail his experiences with mescaline in his Doors of Perception (1954). A few years later, Leary, who had recently joined the Department of Psychology at Harvard, read The Doors of Perception and was able to arrange a meeting with Huxley, then lecturing at the M.I.T. Their meeting resulted in the formation of the Harvard Psilocybin Project in 1960, a series of psychological experiments using, among others, the eponymous mushroom. Although the experiments ceased in March 1962 due to safety concerns, Leary and Huxley remained close until the former's death. In 1963, as Huxley was dying of cancer, his wife Laura gave him LSD, and read to him from Leary's (et al.) manuscript The Psychedelic Experience. Laura and Leary remained friends, and she took part in promoting his work until his death in 1996. Chaos & Cyberculture is a collection essays and interviews investigating technology as, like drugs, a new means and medium through which to experience life. It includes interviews with William S. Burroughs, William Gibson, Winona Ryder (whose father was Leary's personal archivist), and others. Quarto. Original colour pictorial wrappers. Housed in a custom blue cloth slipcase and chemise. Monochrome illustrations throughout. Extremities a little rubbed, minute creasing to foot of spine, the binding otherwise sharp, internally crisp; a near-fine copy.
