[light wear to extremities, pages somewhat age-toned; jacket somewhat browned and slightly mottled along spine, a bit of paper loss at top of spine and upper corners, a couple of tiny tears at base of spine]. The author's first (and apparently only) novel, a "desert story" set in the American Southwest. There's not much geographical specificity, and although some early action in the book takes place in Needles, California, the presence of a number of Navajo characters in the book is more suggestive of an Arizona or New Mexico locale. (There is constant reference throughout the book to "the valley," which is never named, but which is apparently not Death Valley.) The jacket blurb states that the author "lives in Gardner, Massachusetts, where this novel was written. Mrs. Fairbanks is the author of many published stories, but this is her first novel which, we believe, presents her work at its best. We are happy to state that a new book by Mrs. Fairbanks is now being prepared for publication soon." That book seems to have never appeared, and in terms of those "many published stories," I've only been able to turn up one, entitled "True Love Wins," in a 1930 issue of Love Story Magazine. Very uncommon: OCLC records only three copies. The publisher, Robin Wilder and Company, seems to have been as short-lived as Mrs. Fairbanks's literary career; in fact, this book is the *only* title from that company that turns up on OCLC.

With a frontispiece and seven plates.The Memoirs of Mipsie was originally published in 1947, and Lady Addle at Home was originally published in 1945.Collated, complete. In the original cloth bindings. With the publisher's original dust wrappers, all unclipped except for 'The World of Lady Addle'. Externally, 'White Orchids' and 'The World of Lady Addle' are excellent, with minor shelf wear and the odd mark to the boards. 'Silver Horde' and 'Crooked Plough' are very smart, with slight rubbing and bumping to the extremities and damp stains to the boards of 'Plough'. Dust wrappers are very smart, with edge wear and light chipping to the wraps of 'Silver Horde' and 'Crooked Plough'. Spotting and marks to the extremities of 'Crooked Plough', heaviest to the spine. 'World of Lady Addle' and 'White Orchids' dust wrappers are excellent, with minimal edge wear. Internally, firmly bound, with generally bright and clean pages. With contemporary ink inscriptions to the front free endpaper of 'World of Lady Addle' and 'White Orchids'. Very Good Indeed. book.

The first page is an invitation to those working at Grove to an open discussion signed by four former employees at Grove who were fired following union activity. The second and third pages feature the article "A Feminist Takes on The Evergreen" by Ellen Smith Mendocino published by the San Francisco Chronicle, published January 1970, which resulted in her firing. The fourth page lists the reasons why the women have seized the executive offices of Grove Press charging Grove Press with crimes against women. Very Good. Folded in half, pen notation on the second page "Myron Schapiro," light handling marks and edge wear.
