Contemporary panelled (vol. 1) or marbled (vol. 2) calf, spines divided by raised bands between double gilt rules, red and green morocco labels. Some scattered toning and soiling, a number of gatherings in vol. 1 sprung but all present, 2 leaves torn without loss. A little rubbed and scratched, pastedowns in vol 1 lifted. A near-continuous run of the printed issues of the acts passed by the General Assembly, the governing body of the Church of Scotland, which has met annually to deliberate and legislate throughout the Church?s history. The run included here dates from 1690, when the Presbyterian governance of the church was enacted in Scots law to formalise the exclusion of the episcopal structure that had been controversially reintroduced after the Restoration, to 1726, a few years before the First Succession of 1733 - a turbulent period in which the interaction between Church law and civil law was a live issue. The bindings, of varying leather styles but with matching labels, are probably the publisher?s - contemporary ads indicate that groups of issues were sold bound.…

With an intriguing early manuscript inscription on the title page "Ex Libris Joannis Row". John Knox (c. 1514-1572) was the founder of Scottish Presbyterianism. He was aided by John Row (c. 1525-1580). Row had been appointed as the Pope's personal messenger in Scotland, to spy out the work of the Reformation and report back to the Vatican. This plan backfired, as Row observed and exposed a false "miracle" (restoring sight to a 'blind' person). "A friendship grew between him and John Knox, and by the Spring of 1559 he had become a Protestant reformer. Such was the reformers' esteem for John Row, that he was selected, with John Knox and four other Johns, to put together the Scots' Confession of Protestant faith in 1560, which was ratified by the Scottish Parliament. "* There are a series of sons named John Row after John Row (Reformer) (1525-1580); John Row (Carnock minister) (1568-1646); John Row, (1598-1672); John Row, minister of St. Bride's in Dalgety (b. 1645?). We were not able to trace them to the point where ownership in 1732 could be ascertained. Reference at the foot of title page in pencil; "Called by Mr. David Laing "the very accurate Edition' - Preface to Bannatyne Club Edition Vol. I. xlii". A reference to David Laing (1793-1878) the Scottish antiquary and editor of Knox's works for the Bannatyne Club.
