No Binding. Zustand: Fine. 1st Edition, Limited Edition. MAGAZINE: Aspen was a three dimensional multimedia "magazine" in a box, significant as a nexus for the 1960s avant-garde: writers, dancers, composers, filmmakers, and musicians. Aspen Magazine was a created by Phyllis Johnson, published on an irregular schedule between 1965 and 1971. The McLuhan Issue was designed by Quentin Fiore, who had then-recently collaborated with McLuhan on The Medium is the Massage, which went on to become McLuhan's best seller. The contents included several posters, a flexi-disc record of electronic music, an article about a nature trail for the blind and John Cage's Diary: How to Improve the World (You Will Only Make Matters Worse). The advertisements were held in a magenta folder inscribed with McLuhan's theory of effective advertising. RECORD: Two performances by Gordon Mumma, composer and performing musician with the ONCE group theater ensemble, the Sonic Arts Group and the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. "Horn" is a live-performance electronic "chance" composition. The sound source is a french horn fitted with a special mute containing a microphone. The sounds from the microphone are fed to two cybersonic consoles (transistorized sound modifiers). The consoles are operated by two performers who determine the continuity of the work during each performance, according to conditions specified by the computer. Thus, the composition changes at each performance. "In Memoriam Edgar Varèse" is a magnetic tape composition created in the studios of the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center. In contrast to "Horn," this composition was done directly on magnetic tape with each sound created and controlled entirely by the composer in the tape studio. --------------------- CONDITION. RECORD is NM, no marks or creases, unplayed, tab intact. 7" diameter 33 1/3 rpm. CONDITION OF MAGAZINE: The box is G-VG with light soiling around the edges from handling and a heavy bump to the lower-left corner (see photos). CONTENTS: Fine condition (NM).
