"Containing all his Writings, Except the Life of Cicero: Many of which were never before Published.With a complete Index to the whole." Conyers was university librarian for Cambridge. Here you will find his most important work "Introductory Discourses". His religious publications led and responded to much controversy. He questioned the historical accuracy of the Bible and advocated opening up the church to a broader spectrum of beliefs. Alexander Pope considered him a master of the language, and although some plagiarism in his work has been exposed, he has a lasting place of praise in terms of style and argument in the school of rationalist theology.

Because this dictionary stressed departments not found in Bailey, Dyche & Pardon were able to grab a small, loyal share of the growing diction…ary market. Their dictionary, aimed at a less educated class than Bailey's, stressed proper accentuation and pronunciation (it was the first of many dictionaries to stress pronunciation); and, anticipating Webster, suggested several improvements in spelling which were subsequently adopted ("physick" to "physic," for example). Etymology is omitted. The dictionary was begun by Dyche, a schoolmaster, who had two previous non-dictionaries to his credit, A Guide to the English Tongue (1709; 48th ed. by 1774); and, A Dictionary of all the Words Commonly Us'd in the English Tongue (1723), both of which stressed spelling and pronunciation, but gave no definitions. Of William Pardon little is known. The New General English Dictionary is, however, "so different in character from the earlier Dyche works that we are naturally tempted to visit its eccentricities on the unknown Pardon" (see Starnes & Noyes, chapt. XVII). The book incorporates the names and descriptions of hundreds of English and Welsh towns, with their market-days, government, manufactures, distances from London, etc. It was partially due to this gazetteer-like entry that the work remained popular with the public. This is the much rarer and earlier of two charts of the Harbour of Cork published by the firm Mount and Page. It was replaced at the latest by another in 1729. This particular sea chart was first published by William Mount and Thomas Page fr…om at least 1701 in the 'English Pilot First Part, Southern Navigation'. It focuses entirely on the city of Cork and its approaches. There is unusually for a sea chart, extensive topographical detail including numerous roads and outlying villages. The main road (E30) from Cork to 'Midleton' is clearly depicted. There are extensive soundings in many harbours and inlets. Sanderson (1971) 423 no. 76;Shirley (2004) M.M&P 1a no. 18.

Incorporating the names and descriptions of hundreds of English and Welsh towns, with their market-days, government, manufactures, distances from London, etc. It was partially due to this gazetteer-like entry that the work remained popular with the public. The first state of this sea chart of the Algarve in south Portugal and a portion of southern Spain. It was published by Richard Mount whose imprint appears alone in the title. A later state would… bear the imprint of William Mount and Thomas Page. It was published in the 'English Pilot First Part, Southern Navigation'. Two compass roses adorning the map illustrate the maps orientation slightly with north to the left of the top. The chart extends from Cape St. Vincent in Portugal to the Straights of Gibraltar. The main cities of Faro and Cadiz are both clearly identified as are the numerous salt pans in the region. Not in Conde (2003); Sanderson (1971) NMM 423 no. 81; Shirley (2004) M.M&P 1a no. 26.

The text opens with a definition of robbery â" 'the felonious taking of any thing from the person or another against his will' â" and advice on how to report the crime and gain restitution of the stolen goods. Further sections deal with the raising of the 'Hue and Cry', the alarm whereby bystanders are summoned to assist with the apprehension of an offender, the various statutes concerning robbery, and the oath to be taken before a Justice of the Peace by the complainant. Little is known of the author 'J.M.', who also published an account of the Bloudy Murther of Thomas Thyn, Esq., a politician attacked and killed whilst riding in his coach on Pall Mall the year before.
