Half Calf. Zustand: Very Good. 2 Volumes, bound in half calf with marbled boards, illustrated with 24 engraved plates (some folding), being 11 in the first vol and 13 in the second. Spines with gilt lettering and lining. Some wear to corners and head and foot of spine, slight cracking between boards and spine but an excellent tight set in very clean condition, originally bound by Bates of Hexham.

Fully bound in original calfskin leather, with gilt decorations and lettering, red leather spine label. (Boards heavily worn all over and rubbed at edges, with leather cracked and frayed at corners and spine points and joints). Previous owner's inscription on front paste down endpaper, dated 1817 and on half title page. Pages mildly spotted in places, worn at edges, some creasing and corner curls, first few pages fragile in binding. Hervey was Rector of the Weston-Favell parish in Northamptonshire; the content of his meditations and contemplations with largely devotional literature but none the less also an interesting insight into his life and times. It is particularly notable for his tract vindicating the prophecy of Noah, in response to Lord Bolingbroke's earlier expose. 8vo.

Richard Harris Barham (1788-1845), was an English novelist, humorous poet, and priest in the Church of England. He was very much better known by his nom de plume - Thomas Ingoldsby. From Wiki: "on the establishment of Bentley's Miscellany in 1837 he began to furnish the series of grotesque metrical tales known as The Ingoldsby Legends. These became very popular, were published in a collected form and have since passed through numerous editions. In variety and whimsicality of rhymes these verses have hardly a rival since the days of Hudibras. But beneath this obvious popular quality there lies a store of solid antiquarian learning, the fruit of patient enthusiastic research, in out-of-the-way old books, which few readers who laugh over his pages detect." Originally bound in full leather, bow rebacked with brown cloth with but with original leather boards retained (except an inch and a half where the cloth attaches). Engraved frontispiece portrait stained. Text block tightly rebacked with new headbands. Original endpapers retained, with new hinges visible at the gutters. The names 'Cheddar' and 'Sheppard' signed separately on front endpapers. The name 'William Sheppard' signed twice on pave 255 and twice more on rear endpapers. Text printed in double columns. Measures 9 x 11.75 inches. 38 hand colored plates at the end (there should be 40). Plates have a bit of fading but are bright and attractive all the same. Culpeper's Complete Physician was written several years earlier, but was not combined with the Herbal until 1814. A popular reference that has nearly attained an iconic status now, for its plates. In half calf bindings and cloth boards. Externally, fair. There is some loss to the tail of the spine of one volume. There is significant rubbing to the spines, extremities and leather overall. There is also some wear to the cloth. The joints are cracked. The hinges are held by cords only. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are generally bright and clean with some spotting throughout. Bound in three-quarter calf with blue cloth boards and gilt lettering to paneled spine. Boards show some rubbing and wear to binding, wear to front hinge, and cracking to upper hinges. Text block shows very mild scattered foxing, 1905/1921 ink ownership and notes to front endpapers, and moderate foxing to title page of Paradise Regained. Marbled endpapers. Two books bound together; Paradise Lost with two engraved portraits after Vertue, a half-title, and an index.; Paradise Regained with engraved title page, folding map; parts of the volume have been trimmed close at the top edge, with no loss to text, map has been very closely trimmed, with very small loss to border line; map with two pieces of backing.
