8vo. First editions. First editions. 8vo. Eliza Roxey Snow Smith (1804-1887), "The Mother of Mormonism," was born in Becket, Massachusetts. Joseph Smith "called at her father's house in Mantua in the course of proselytizing mission and greatly impressed Eliza. Eliza Snow began to influence Mormonism as early as December 1836 whe…n she left her home to live among the Mormons in Kirtland.". She boarded in the household of Joseph Smith, became governess to his children, and for a number of years was companion to his wife Emma Hale Smith. In 1841 she secretly became one of his plural wives. After Smith's assassination she lived with the Brigham Young family, and became one of his wives in 1849. She was a dedicated feminist, and vigorously fought the anti-Mormon myth of the subjegation of women. 'Poems, Religious, Historical and Political' (2 volumes) is considered one of her "most important works" [see 'Notable American Women,' Vol. III, p. 307]. Flake 7843 & 7844; Publisher's cloth. Volume one has moderate, even fading on spine, with light fading to extremities of covers, else a very good copy, with text fresh and clean; Volume two has light wear to cloth at tips of spine and corners, rear cover has short closed at crown of spine, front flyleaf is neatly excised, frontispiece foxed (on unprinted verso), else a very good, bright copy, with the text fresh and clean. An attractive set.
