[231 x 145 x 35 mm]. xvi, 256pp. Bound in near contemporary half calf, marbled paper sides, smooth spine divided into five panels by gilt pallets, lettered in the second, the others with a centre tool, plain endleaves, marbled edges. (A little rubbed). Some light foxing and soiling, and offsetting from the plates (two with short closed tears). A good copy in a handsome binding. The illustrations are copies of the 1793 Stockdale edition, re-engraved in oval form. They include 12 after designs by William Blake. The life of the author is taken from Johnson's Lives of the English Poets.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Fourth Edition. 15-volume set (complete). A well-preserved set of George Steevens' 1793 15-Volume edition of Shakespeare's works, in original full calf. The leather has become dry and cracked with age, and there is some chipping and rubbing to the corners of the boards and heads and feet of the spines, but the binding remains fully intact. The hinges and joints of several volumes are cracked, but holding well. The front board of Volume 3 has been neatly re-attached with linen hinges. Book pages have normal age related wear with some foxing, mainly around endpapers, but overall are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. The front pastedown of each volume has the bookplate of Edward King, with coat of arms and the motto 'Kings Ay to Kin Kindlie'. Volume One has handwritten note, with initials "E.K", on front free endpaper "This is known as 'Steevens' Own Edition' and is by many considered the most accurate and desirable edition published." This is the first attempt at a bibliography of European works about America. It is made more valuable by the inclusion of "An introductory discourse on the state of literature in North and South America." p. [5]-21. This, then is also the first bibliography of American literature. It is interesting to note that one of the 4 booksellers for whom it was printed is Elizabeth Harlow, a woman pioneer bookseller. Previous owner's neat errata corrections in blue ink. Overall a very good copy. James Capper was a British army officer and meteorologist. "He was educated at Harrow School and served thereafter in His Majesty's Train of Artillery in the East Indies, first as a soldier cadet and later as an officer. He was then for a while a free merchant in Bengal before becoming in 1768 a captain in the Madras army and in 1769 senior writer for the presidency of Bengal. He was repatriated on grounds of ill health after becoming unwell on active service but returned to India in 1773, when appointed the East India Company's commissary-general upon the coast of Coromandel, with the brevet rank of colonel. Capper was sent home with dispatches in early 1777 and remained in England until the autumn of 1778 when, to explore the feasibility of opening a new channel for transmitting intelligence between Europe and India, he returned to Madras by way of Aleppo, the Arabian desert, and Basrah. Details of his journey from India to England in early 1777 (via Ceylon and Suez) and his return journey in 1778-9 are contained in his Observations on the passage to India through Egypt and across the great desert, with occasional remarks on the adjacent countries and also sketches of the different routes (1783; 3rd edn 1785)." Early ownership signature of "John Elston his book 1799." Crakelt's durable revision of Entick's work came out in 1784 and went through as many as twelve editions by 1800. First and only edition. Tarleton's defeat at Cowpens in January 1781 didn't dampen his reputation as a beau sabreur nor moderate his hero's welcome. But criticism in the British press in 1786 stung him into publishing his retaliatory History. Mackenzie, who was present at the battle, retorted with letters to the Morning Post, the basis for this scarce book. At Cowpens, Tarleton badly mishandled his command and Mackenzie's seasoned regiment, the 71st Foot, was severely mauled. Here he lambasts Tarleton's History, published earlier in the same year, which was self-justificatory and critical of Lord Cornwallis, remarking: "This elaborate performance, though ingeniously worked up, abounds with misrepresentation and error; it does injustice to a number of respectable officers; wantons in reflecting unmerited disgrace on entire corps of the army, and is replete with palpable inconsistencies" (p. 3). During the war Tarleton commanded the British Legion, a unit of American loyalists infamous for its harsh and undisciplined treatment of the local population. Despite the disaster at Cowpens, his esteem at home no doubt nettled Mackenzie. This copy has notes pasted to the endpapers and half-title and some pencil markings in the text at relevant points. These appear to have been made in the late 19th century by descendants of a Major Green, who was present at the siege of Forty Ninety-Six, South Carolina, in the early summer of 1781. ESTC T92989 notes two variants, with no priority: the imprints list the same booksellers but in a different order; the present copy has the errata printed on page vi and not the following blank; Bruce 5424; Howes M138; Sabin 43431. The present work contains details of his journey from India to England in early 1777, via Ceylon and Suez, and his return journey in 1778-9. Given more or less in journal form, it is full of fascinating details of local life, offering numerous hints for the traveller in the region. As was so often the case, Capper felt himself badly treated by John Company, issuing a lengthy memorial detailing the abuses of the company's lax and corrupt civilian management in India. "Despite this he resumed his career in India in 1785, when he became comptroller-general of the army and fortification accompts on the coast of Coromandel, charged with reducing expenditure in Madras. He resigned in 1791 and returned to Britain. The East India Company twice thereafter refused him a pension."
