Sewing and leaves remain strong, showing only the very faint marginal toning and foxing of age. All joints delicate, with some boards coming detached. Boards show expected dust-toning and edgewear; spines variably worn, with some mostly lacking their covers. Where visible, spine titles manuscript. Two parts in one volume, bound in recent half calf, marbled boards, gilt banded spine, small flower head devices, black label. ESTC T209194 & ESTC T100972. In 1753, Elizabeth Canning, a servant, disappeared from her mother's home, reappearing one month later, starved, weak, and telling a tale that was to become the subject of over forty pamphlets in 1753-54. She claimed that she was robbed on her way home from visiting some relatives, taken forcibly to a house in Enfield Wash, stripped of her petticoat, gown, stays, and cap, and held captive in an unheated garret room, with only a small amount of bread and water, for one month. She managed to escape through a window and walked the considerable distance back to her mother's house. Henry Fielding, who was Justice of the Peace for Middlesex, issued a warrant for the detention of Wells and Squires, her supposed abductors, and the case went to trial at the Old Bailey in February 1753. Although they were initially found guilty, the Chief Magistrate of London was dissatisfied with the verdict, and the case was re-opened, concluding with Canning's conviction for perjury, one month of imprisonment and seven years of transportation, in July 1754. Whilst awaiting trial the press was divided into two camps, identified as the Canningites and Egyptians (for 'Gypsy Mary Squires'). Henry Fielding wrote A Clear Statement of the Case of Elizabeth Canning, and a number of his enemies wrote replies, most notably John Hill.…

Two works in one volume, 4to, pp. [iv], 28; [iv], 23; engraved vignettes to both titles and tailpieces at end; rebound in modern half morocco over marbled boards. First editions, including the Elegies, Scott's first publication. John Scott (1730-83) came from a poor Quaker family who moved to Amwell, Herts, when he was ten years old. He had little formal education, but became interested in poetry as a teenager and his published poetry, which began to appear in the Gentleman's Magazine in the 1750s, attracted the attention of Elizabeth Carter and Catherine Talbot and, somewhat later, of Samuel Johnson, who visited him at Amwell in 1773. Boswell also records a dinner in April 1775 at which both were present; but Johnson did not think very much of his Elegies, commenting: 'They are very well; but such as twenty people might write' (Hill Powell ii 351). Scott's fame, and his modern suffix, as 'Scott of Amwell', stems from his famous topographical poem about his home town. Provenance. Although in a modern binding, both pieces have clearly been together since an early date, because each has a contemporary inscription 'Bab: Arthington' on the half title. Tenth Edition of Thomas Gray's Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard. The First Edition thus, edited by Moncrief, of Lady Elizabeth Wardlaw's Hardyknute, which appeared previously in shorter Scottish editions, without notes. All other works are First Editions, and all works collate complete. Paul Whitehead's satire of Walpole, The State of Rome under Nero and Domitian, and Thomas Gray's Odes [1757]. Also with John Gilbert Cooper's Epistles to the Great, and The Call of Aristippus; Mark Akenside's Ode to the Country Gentlemen of England; William King's Oratio in Theatro Sheldoniano; Thomas Warton's Mons Catharinae, Prope Wintoniam; Robert Nugent's Epistle to the Right Honourable Sir Robert Walpole. Most of the collection were published by Robert Dodsley, an eminent bookseller, talented author in his own right, and "martyr in the fight for a free British press" (Solomon p. 88). Some trimming to the Epistle to Walpole, and the Folio sized leaves of The State of Rome are slightly and neatly cut near the gutter and folded to size. Bookplate of Walter Bagot, and 'Egerton Bagot' written in ink on the front pastedown; Rev. Walter Bagot was a friend of the poet William Cowper. Holograph list of works on the front endpaper, by a contemporary hand. Late 18th century vellum with decorative gilt borders, and faded title in ink on the spine. A contemporary and uniform set of Johnson's masterwork of critical literary observations, all volumes uncut, in the original boards. The arms on the bookplate suggest that the previous owner who has signed and dated each title page "Fitzwilliam / 1781" is William, 4th Earl Fitzwilliam (1748-1833). A subsequent owner has attempted to rub out the Fitzwilliam name and the crown on the bookplates. Courtney, 141-42; Fleeman 79.4LP/5.
