Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. Two volumes (complete). Two comfortable books. Full leather. Gilt monogram of the 5th Earl of Essex (a most wealthy Earldom that allowed George Essex to safely and smoothly move from sinecure to sinecure; his wealth however enabled him to entertain, and commission from, artists such as Turner, Pugin, Horsley, David Wilkie and Landseer). Gilt borders and titling. The spines have wear about the seams and head and feet. The boards have shelving and handling wear about the edges and corners. The boards and spines are comfortable and steady. The contents are most pleasing - especially taking their age into account. They are fresh, clean, clear, only very occasionally smeared with shallow foxing, certain, companionable and assured, all very charming. fk. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. The Spectator began publication in 1711 and ended in 1713, and at its height sold 20,000 copies a day, according to its authors, covering all manner of subjects pertinent to 18th Century life in London. It is thought to have actually had a daily circulation of 3,000, with many more actual readers who would have read it in London's subscribing coffeehouses. It was also widely read in the American colonies. Originally issued as a paper, the issues were later collated into sets such as this one, reprinted, and continued to be widely read, long after it ceased to be published. The Spectator, in Eight Volumes (complete). All volumes dated to 1791. Printed by David Niven of Glasgow in 1791. Printed for J. Duncan, J. & M. Robertson, Dunlop, & Wilson, J. & W. Shaw, R. Farie, A. Orr, A. M'Goun, and A. Macaulay, Glasgow.; J. Dickson, E. Balfour, P. Hill, J. Hunter, and J. & J. Fairbairn, Edinburgh; and W. Coke, Leith. A very good set. Each volume in full tree calf leather hardback with burgundy and gilt morocco title label to spine, along with dark green morocco volume number label. Gilt decal borders to covers. Covers with rubbing, bumping and wear. Some outer joints worn, but all still bound. Volume 6 spine a little more worn than the others.  Each volume with pictorial frontispiece preceding the title page. Lower edges of frontispiece pages often trimmed shorter than main text at margin. With some offsetting opposite images. Text is nice and clean throughout, making for a very readable set. Text with a few minor flaws - one volume with some marginal tears at title page, and one with gutter tear to title page, meaning page is loose, but still attached. Occasional minor nicks or corner crease. Lower edge of blank endpaper in Volume 8 is roughly torn at lower edge. Some offsetting and minor age spotting to endpapers. Overall an attractive and desirable set, complete in 8 matching bindings. A particularly nice feature is the coloured line decoration to the edge of text block. Text in English. Pagination: Volume 1: 313pp + (10pp) Index;  Volume 2: 224pp + (10pp) Index;  Volume 3: 302pp + (9pp) Index;  Volume 4: 282pp + (6pp) Index;  Volume 5: 285pp + (7pp) Index;  Volume 6: 291pp + (13pp) Index;  Volume 7: 316pp + (8pp) Index;  Volume 8: 273pp + (7pp) Index.  Dimensions: Each volume approximately 184mm x 109mm x 25mm. Set weighs approximately 2.65kg unpacked. Extra postage may be payable for overseas orders. More photos on request.

Leather-bound. Zustand: Good. Second Edition, with Additions. 12mo. Contemporary calf boards, xii + p. 136. Board surfaces scuffed, nicked and altogether abraded in places, with wear, peeling and stray-poking stitching particularly, at bottom of spine. All leather edges gilt-detailed. 11 (of 14 copperplates present, 1 detached but present). Printer's Device of Crossed Keys to title page. (Note: The author is not the famous explorer by the same name). Solildly bound copy in original binding, with fascinating copper plates depicting intricate architectural and artistic details. Cathedrals were once designed consciously, with deep knowledge of how shape of wall, play of light and shadow, affected the inner lives of worshipers and aspirants, remarkably inspiring within the "wish to Be", to rise up, to commune with God. The copperplates within this eighteenth-century study, magnificently reveal this purposed, now perhaps lost forever, understanding of sacred geometry, as manifested in architecture. Includes a "List of persons buried in this Cathedral", including Marmaduke Constaable, Hugh de Lubbersthorpe,Dame Elizabeth Beckwith, , Ethelrida, Daughter of Edwin the Great, Eadbert, King of Northumberland, John Negropontens, Gilbert Pynchbeck, Lady Mary Younge, Richrd Whittington (but not his cat), and Sweryne, a Danish King. ".With the Office of Treasurer naturally fell that of Sub-Treasrer, whose duty it was to provide Sacrists and other Officers to do the servile Offcesof the Church, as cleaning it, opening the Doors, ringing the Bells, blowing the Organ, &c. for which the Treasurer usually paid him a Salary of 50 Marks - Bot these Offices became extinct in this Church very early, and the Reason given for dissolving them was undoubtedly a sufficient one. (abrepto omni Thesauro, desiit Thesaurorii munus: Being plundered of all its Treasure, it had no further Need of a Treasurer." (p. 134).

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. First Edition. The History and Antiquities of the City of York, From its Origin to the Present Times. Illustrated with Twenty-Two Copper Plates. Vol. 1 with folding frontispiece map and 17 plates (five of them folding), vol. 2 with two folding plates, vol.3 with a folding plate and a folding plate. Three volumes. 12mo. [194 x 113 x 105 mm]. [2]ff, 400pp; [1]f, 402pp; [1]f, 292 pp. Bound c.1835 in blue boards and purple cloth spines with printed paper labels, plain endleaves, uncut and partly unopened edges. (The cloth a little faded and labels chipped). A fine copy, with the pages entirely untrimmed and some leaves unopened. It is clearly in its first binding, but the binding probably dates from the 1830s. Perhaps a bookseller found a set (or more) of unused sheets and had them bound in the style of the day. The work is sometimes attributed to William Combe. The "Editor" notes that the only previous successful attempt to publish a History of York was Drake's work of 1736. By 1785 that work was out of print and "no Copies were to be met with, except at the Decease of some particular Gentlemen, and for which an exhorbitant Price must be given". The contents of each volume is summarised on the title-pages.
