St John Philby [.] charting his explorations into the bewildering thickets of the story [of the Queen of Sheba]" (publisher's blurb). With an introduction by the British military officer, Arabist, explorer, historian and diplomat Gerald de Gaury (1897-1984). - Dutch newspaper clipping about the analysis of an Ethiopian DNA sample supposedly going back to the legendary Queen of Sheba is loosely inserted. - In mint condition. - OCLC 640352386.

Hard Cover. SIGNED FIRST EDITION. Folio, pp., 15 illustrated Foreword followed by pp., [136] colour photographs with accompanying captions, and pp., [9] credits. Publishers' black cloth with gilt titles to spine in unclipped pictorial dust-jacket. Board corners and head of spine slightly bumped with associated creasing otherwise a clean and bright copy. With the Author's signature to white book plate to ffep (the flourishes to the signature extend to the endpaper itself, so Clarke handled the book whilst signing it and the plate is presumably only there because the endpapers and prelims are on black paper). Jacket a little creased. A Very Good copy in like jacket. Clarke's striking images tend towards eroticism, fetishism and fantasy, with motorcycle and car imagery, nudity and fashion. Taken from the photographer's best work of the previous six years. Heavyweight so a contribution towards increased postage costs may be requested for overseas delivery.

The recipient was the civil rights campaigner Jessica "Decca" Freeman-Mitford (1917-1996), whose review of this work is quoted on the rear cover: "The best insight into racism in Britain that I have ever read". Kapo (b. 1946) came to Britain from Nigeria in 1953. A Savage Culture examines the entrenchment of racism in post-war Britain and argues that it was exacerbated by a refusal to accept the loss of empire; the book is dedicated to "young Britons who have not yet made up their minds". Octavo. Original pictorial wrappers, lettered in black on spine and red on front cover. Rear cover toned, else a fine copy.
