In den WarenkorbZustand: NEAR FINE. First printing, a trade paperback original. An account of one of the first widely publicized murder trials in Oregon history. At the 65, Nimrod O'Kelly trekked from Missouri along the Oregon Trail in 1845 and "became one of the first to stake a claim in the lush Willamette valley. Although he made few improve…ments to the land, he professed that he had a wife and family back home and thus had a right to 640 acres - one full square mile - of fertile ground. Over the next seven years, settlers continued to arrive, and many of these new neighbors grew suspicious of his entitlement. Slowly they began to encroach on his property. Eventually the dispute boiled over, leaving young Jeremiah Mahoney dead, a gaping gunshot wound in his chest. The killer - 72 year-old Nimrod O'Kelly - chose not to run, but to turn himself in, claiming self-defense. The events that followed provide an intricate look at law on the frontier - a place without jails, courtrooms, coroners, and crimelabs, where many settlers were as wild as the land, where judges traveled on horseback to conduct legal proceedings, and where convicted murderers often met their end on the gallows. Ultimately, Benton County vs. Nimrod O'Kelly was heard by the fledgling territory's Supreme Court." Several appendices, references, sources index. xiii, 301 pp., Near fine in illustrated wrappers.

In den WarenkorbZustand: Gut. 56 p., 78 ill. A perfect copy. - From the text by Faya Causey and Jiri Frel: The monumental figure of Rodin appears both as the consummate genius of the classical sculptural tradition and as the father of modern sculpture. His work unites both aspects, and in so doing it expresses the anxieties of his epoch as well… as the anxieties of our own. Rodin was aware of his position in Western art and of this apparent antinomy in his work. He recognized his debts to three major sources, yet he was fully conscious of the new doors he was opening. He admired the works of Greek classical sculpture, and he had the greatest respect for Phidiashe collected first plaster casts and later countless ancient marbles. Rodin not only reveals his understanding of the basic principles of sculpture formulated by the Greeks; he also presents many instances of direct inspiration from antiquity. As a young sculptor he signed a bronze cast of the Torso Belvedere, which is reproduced here for the first time. He also used the Torso Belvederecompleting it with some ornamental elementsfor an early commission to decorate the Bourse in Brussels. Such direct quotation of a masterpiece, famous since the Renaissance, constitutes a kind of manifesto. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 250 Original brochure, stapled, 21.5 cm.
