In this book, the first of its kind, the author examines the mathematical contributions of many African peoples in the context of their social and economic development. This study, a product of years of research in the traditional mathematics of Africa south of the Sahara, is based on personal interviews with both African and non-African scholars, on a study of African literature, art and other aspects of African culture, and on written works in many disciplineshistory, economics, ethnology, anthropology, archaeology, and linguistics. The old misconception that "Africans could not count beyond ten" can now be put to rest forever. Using number and pattern as an organizing principle, Ms. Zaslavsky has been eminently successful in showing the richness of African culture.
