Bookstaber, Richard M., 1950-. The end of theory: financial crises, the failure of economics, and the sweep of human interaction. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 2017, 1st printing number line ending in 1, viii, 226pp., very good dust-jacket, very good black cloth, little used if at all. "An in-depth look at how to account for the human complexities at the heart of today's financial system Our economy may have recovered from the Great Recession--but not our economics. In The End of Theory, Richard Bookstaber, one of the world's leading risk managers, discusses why the human condition and the radical uncertainty of our world renders the standard economic model--and the theory behind it--useless for dealing with financial crises. What model should replace it? None. At least not any version we've been using for the past two hundred years. Instead, Bookstaber argues for a new approach called agent-based economics, one that takes as a starting point the fact that we are humans, not the optimizing automatons that standard economics assumes we are. Bookstaber's groundbreaking paradigm promises to do a far better job at preventing crises and managing those that break out. As he explains, our varied memories and imaginations color our economic behavior in unexpected hues. Agent-based modeling embraces these nuances by avoiding the mechanistic, unrealistic structure of our current economic approach. Bookstaber tackles issues such as radical uncertainty, when circumstances take place beyond our anticipation, and emergence, when innocent, everyday interactions combine to create sudden chaos. Starting with the realization that future crises cannot be predicted by the past, he proposes an approach that recognizes the human narrative while addressing market realities. Sweeping aside the historic failure of twentieth-century economics, The End of Theory offers a novel and innovative perspective, along with a more realistic and human framework, to help prevent today's financial system from blowing up again.". PAPERBACK, very good, covers curled outwards. AXELROD, STEVEN GOULD. Robert Lowell: Life and Art. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1979, xiii, 286pp., . This major interpretation of the life and art of Robert Lowell exposes the full relationship between the poetry and the personal and national experience to which it is so remarkably connected. Steven Axelrod proposes that the key to our understanding of Lowell's poetic achievement lies precisely in this interpenetration of his life and his art. - Making extensive use of primary sources never before studied by scholars, including Lowell's manuscript drafts of his poems and his unpublished notebooks, essays, and letters, Steven Axelrod adds significantly to our understanding of Lowell's underlying belief that 'the artist's existence becomes his art." Steven Gould Axelrod is Associate Professor of English at the University of California at Riverside - CONTENTS: I. Introduction: Lowell's Poetry of Experience -- II. Myths of Experience -- III. Photographs of Experience -- IV. Impressions of Experience -- V. The Book of Life -- Chronology -- Appendix A. Poems Lowell Copied into His Notebooks, 1939-1943 -- Appendix B. Adams, Robert McC., 1926-. Paths of fire: an anthropologist's inquiry into Western technology. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1996, 1st printing number line, xvi, 332pp., good dust-jacket, a few small tears, very good black cloth. Technology, perhaps the most salient feature of our time, affects everything from jobs to international law, yet ranks among the most unpredictable facets of human life. Here, Robert McC. Adams, renowned anthropologist and Secretary Emeritus of the Smithsonian Institution, builds a new approach to understanding the circumstances that drive technological change, stressing its episodic, irregular nature. The result is nothing less than a sweeping history of technological transformation from ancient times until now. Rare in antiquity, the bursts of innovation that mark the path of technology have gradually accelerated and have become an almost continuous feature of our culture. Repeatedly shifting in direction, this path has been shaped by a host of interacting social, cultural, and scientific forces rather than any deterministic logic. Thus future technological developments, Adams maintains, are predictable only over the very short term. Adams's account highlights Britain and the United States from early modern times onward. Locating the roots of the Industrial Revolution in British economic and social institutions, he goes on to consider the new forms of enterprise in which it was embodied and its loss of momentum in the later nineteenth century. He then turns to the early United States, whose path toward industrialization initially involved considerable "technology transfer" from Britain. Adams concludes with an argument for active government support of science and technology research that should be read by anyone interested in America's ability to compete globally. - CONTENTS: Paths of fire: the idea of technological change -- The useful arts in western antiquity -- Technology and the new European society -- England as the workshop of the world -- Atlantic crossing: the American system emerges -- The United States succeeds to industrial leadership -- The competitive global system -- New paths: technological change in a borderless world. 9780691026343 ISBN 0691026343.

very good dust-jacket, very good purple cloth. HANÁK, PÉTER. The garden and the workshop: essays on the cultural history of Vienna and Budapest. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1998, 1st printing number line ending in 1, xxiii, 249pp., . In comparing the two cities, Hanak notes that Vienna, famed for its spacious parks and gardens, was often characterized as a "garden" of esoteric culture. Budapest, however, was a dense city surrounded by factories, whose cultural leaders referred to the offices and cafes where they met as "workshops." These differences were reflected, he argues, in the contrast between Vienna's aesthetic and individualistic culture and Budapest's more moralistic and socially engaged approach. Like Carl Schorske's famous Fin-de-Siecle Vienna, Hanak's book paints a remarkable portrait of turn-of-the-century life in Central Europe. Its particular focus on mass culture and everyday life offers important new insights into cultural currents that shaped the course of the twentieth century. - CONTENTS: Urbanization and civilization : Vienna and Budapest in the nineteenth century -- The image of the Germans and the Jews in the Hungarian mirror of the nineteenth century -- The garden and the workshop : reflections on fin-de-siècle culture in Vienna and Budapest -- The alienation of death in Budapest and Vienna at the turn of the century -- The start of Endre Ady's literary career (1903-1905) -- The cultural role of the Vienna-Budapest operetta -- Social marginality and cultural creativity in Vienna and Budapest (1890-1914) -- Vox populi : intercepted letters in the First World War. 9780691015545 ISBN 0691015546.
