The time around 1800 was a fascinating period of transition, of endings and new beginnings in all aspects of life: intellectually, socially, economically and politically. It was the time of the French Revolution, the fall of the Habsburg Empire (1806), secularization, the Napoleonic Wars, the Restoration. In the art of drawing, which was the "signature" of that era, contemporary changes in society could be found more subtly than in other genres. In the literary age of Goethe, the most influential artists produced masterpieces in the field of drawing, and many others devoted themselves to that genre exclusively. "Fuseli to Menzel" contains a selection of works by 47 artists from the late 18th and early 19th centuries representing Romanticism and other artistic trends of the period. Besides superb Grand Manner family portraits, the collection includes many important Old Master paintings that were collected in the 1760s and 1770s by John Stuart, Third Earl of Bute (1713-1792). Bute was tutor to King George III when he was Prince of Wales, advising him, among other things, on acquisitions for the Royal Collection. The new king's favourite became Prime Minister in 1762, his main business being to negotiate the Peace of Paris, which ended the Seven Years' War. Within one year, how-ever, Bute had resigned and fled London. He bought a country house at Luton as a retirement project. The house was remodelled by Robert Adam, and the grounds were land-scaped by Lancelot "Capability" Brown. Luton Hoo became the repository for one of the greatest art collections of the age. At the time of his death, there were 500 works in the house. Bute had a passion for Venetian art and the grand rooms on the ground floor at Luton were hung with works by Tintoretto, Veronese and Bordone, Zuccarelli, as well as several northern masterpieces by Rubens, Cuyp and Berchem. The generally smaller Dutch and Flemish paintings, which were a special focus of Bute's collecting, were accommodated on the upper floor, clustered in dense thematic hangs in the bedrooms and dressing rooms. This publication focuses on the main themes of Bute's collecting, not least his formation of a truly great collection of Dutch and Flemish paintings.
