The idea of this seminar was to explore the scientific perspectives of Vedas and to delve deeply into the Vedic lore from the view point of modern scientific acumen by bringing together the scientists and the pundits on the podium. Vedic seers have unravelled the mysteries of life and creation through their intuition. It has to be investigated whether the ancient wisdom can widen the horizons of modern scientific thought and open new vistas. It is hoped that the ideas presented in the papers collected here will generate further quarries and fruitful discussions. 144 pp.

The sage Brhaspati of Vedic antiquity is much known for his wisdom relating to Dandaniti- one of the four ancient branches of Vidyas such as Anviksiki, Trayi, and Värtä. Subsequently, various other branches of ancient knowledge such as Dharmasastra, logic, and various Silpa sastras were also ascribed to him. As the founder of the school of polity, he is the predecessor of Kautilya who in his Arthasästra acknowledges his contribution to Dandaniti or Rajaśästra variously. His work has references in various ancient texts such as Asvaghosa s, Buddhacharit, Pañcatantra, Kamandaka Nitisara, Yuktikalpataru etc. The present text, which is in Sutra style, itself is the testimony of its antiquity. The present text of Barhaspatya Sutra, with certain ommissions and interpolations and also transformations is of great value as this aspect of the subject quite differently than Kautilya s Arthasastra and other works on polity and administration belonging to the Dharmashastric school. Avoiding theoretical problems of polity the sutras of the texts deal the practical problems of the polity and statecraft aiming at the stability and solidarity of a state. Most of the aphorisms of the centre of the text around the king as the head of the state, whose self-cultivation has been emphasized variously leading to self-confidence, good conduct and good company, and administrative vigilance. For such qualitative acquisition, Brhaspati is found here suggesting various Does and Not does. The texts suggests how to avoid various danger to a state both internal as well as external by following six-fold upayas and knitting together the various angas of the state. The fundamental unity of India is the most point of Indian polity and is described for the first time to illustrate this view-point and also the cultural unity, here in this text.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: As New. It is well-known that the Vedang Jyotisha (Astrology) is held in high esteem in India. No activity in India be social, political, religious would be performed without consulting Jyotis acharya. Veracity of Jyotisha has been severally tested by the cient sages with their experience and penance of several centuries. This remarkable science in which most of the men all over the world implicit faith, has been handed down in India from time immemorial. In India, the Vedas which are the oldest records of human civilization contain innumerable references to Nakshatras, Seasons, Years, Months, the Sun, the Moon etc. Generally this science lyotisha" is classified into three catetgories viz., Hora, Siddhant and Samhita. There are number of classical texts available in India in all these branches of Jyotisha. In Indian culture the place of women is held in high esteem. It is firmly believed that the support of the woman is crucial in the success of the man. Hence much importance is given to the qualities of a woman. The natal chart (the Horoscope) is being intensively studied before the marriage. Though the results of the planetary combinations at the birth are the same irrespective that of a man or woman, there was some difference found in respect of woman in some cases. Therefore a separate chapter "Strijatakam" could be found in all classical Jyotisha texts where the results of different planetary combinations are elaborately discussed basing on the time of the birth of the woman. It is very glad that Guru Dr. Jitendra Vyas, the blogger, Columnist, the author/editor of more than ten Jyotisha manuscripts/books in such a young age and a renowned practicing astrologer has translated/edited the text "Strijatakam" to English. it is well-known that brevity of a vast subject reflects the scholarship of an author. It is no doubt that this English translation reveals the head and the heart of the original Sanskrit text.

Do Indians etc. are concerned about philosophical problems are some of the questions raised by some philosophers. They branded Indian philosophy or rather the literature of Indian philosophy as religious literature based on faith and are dogmatic by nature having little to do with philosophy as such. Here in the present work an occasion has been created to make available some sample of Indian philosophical literature in English for those who raised these types of objections. The present work is the English translation of Nyayasiddhantadipa with a critical study. Nyayasiddhantadipa is a Navya Nyaya text written by Sasadharacharya who held the glorious title of Mahamahopadhyaya (the great teacher). The most famous and profound exponent of Navya Nyaya school of philosophy was Gangesa Upadhyaya whose approximate time is 1300-1350 A.D. Sasadhara flourished before Gangesa and preceded by almost a century and a half." (jacket).

Conclusion. Bibliography. "Since the discovery of Sanskrit's kinship with some ancient languages of Europe, several western scholars have tried to systematically explore the similarities found in the grammatical system and vocabulary of various Indo-European Languages. It is interesting to note that in spite of disparity of time and space both Sanskrit and Russian have such a striking similarity in the basic Indo-European vocabulary that one is but bound to believe that they have descended from some common source. The object of present treatise "Cognate Words in Sanskrit and Russian" is to present a critical and systematic analysis of cognate words in Sanskrit and Russian in the light of comparative philology. The etymological explanations, furnished with references to the views of various eminent foreign and Indian scholars, are mostly the accepted ones and are well supported by phonetic as well as semantic congruence. With a view to make the comparison lucid and comprehensible, the phonetic laws operating in Sanskrit and Russian have been dealt with in detail. Each statement has been supported by parallel correspondences found in other Indo-European languages." (jacket).

Naiyayikas defence in favour of inherence. 9. Conclusion. II 1. Text of Samavayavada with English translation and notes. Bibliography. Index. There are a number of controversies in accepting Samavaya as a relation. Three different streams of thoughts coming from different schools are prominent. On the one side stands the extreme realist amongst the whom the Naiyayika is the chief who holds clearly an objective view of the relation in general and the relation of inherence in particular. On the other side we have the idealists the Buddhists followed by the Vedantins who hold a subjective view of the relation of inherence. Still there is a third group which stands in the middle keeping the realists on the one side and the idealists on the other maintaining a relative view of inherence. Gangesa who flourished in 13 cen. A.D. has devoted a full chapter entitled Samavayavada in his monumental treatise the Tattvacintamani and the entire discussion in the present work is made in the light of his arguments. The book is divided in two parts. The first part is a general introduction where the findings of the present study are incorporated. In the second part an English translation of the text Samavayavada is presented along with explanatory notes. 195 pp.

Conclusion. Bibliography. "Despite arousal of emotions being the primary concern of an artist in a work of art the world of English literature still lacks a systematic discovery and study of it. The great saint of Indian tradition, Bharatamuni, in his classic, Natyasastra (chater VI and VII) has propounded the Rasa-Bhava theory which describes in detail all the emotions which are inborn in man and emotions which can be aroused in man. This book attempts to uncover to the western world the systematic record of emotions as discovered by Bharatamuni and which are as relevant and acceptable even today. An application of the Rasa-Bhava theory on any branch of literature would enable one to analyze with perfection the display of emotions in it. We are sure that this book will not only help the readers understand the function of emotions impeccably but will also encourage further the study and research in this area." (jacket).

Though Bana at times appears to be too ornate and verbose his style is always mellifluous and his writing enriched in allusions and cultural ideals to all time of all people. At the same time his good style marked by long compounds and lofty imaginations can never be lost sight off. The present work has highlighted the merits of Bhanucandra as commentator of Bana's Kadambari. And has given a critical analysis of Bana's style and diction and also the erudite scholarship of Bhanu who has left on word unturned to find out the sources of Bana's usage and contention. This book is an overview of the biographies and writings of some selected western women scholars of Indology. It was not possible to include all the noteworthy scholars, nor was it possible to obtain all the required material covering a comprehensive account of western women Indologists. The scope of the present book is for a limited period. It discusses the Scholars who have contributed to this field, especially in the 19th, 20th, and early years of the 21st century. It has been observed that the major contribution of western women scholars to Indological studies is through their translations and editorial works. This book is divided into different sections showing the country-wise classification of scholars and their contribution to Indology. The biographies are based on some Internet sources, and detailed references and sources have been given wherever necessary. It was not possible to get the photographs of some authors from available sources so those photography are not included in the book. This book is not an exhaustive survey. Many other important women Indologists have contributed to this field. Considering the startcomings of the work it is hoped that the purpose of this book is to show that the contribution of western women scholars to Indology is also remarkable thus, it is need of an hour to revisit, restudied, and appraise their works before it slips from the mind of contemporary scholars. At a time when women scholars were just beginning to make their way into the corridors of male power, these women scholars blazed with their contributions. It is hoped that the book will benefit not only those who are working in the field of Indology but also the general reader, who are interested in the work of western women scholars done in the field of Indology.

Bibliography. "The term 'abhicara' in ancient Indian Literature stands for all types of harmful ritual practices which is otherwise known as sorcery or black magic. It is a wide spread phenomenon in the Vedic ritual system. There is a general belief that only the text of the Atharva Veda and the sacrifice called syena contain such dangerous rituals. But, in fact, all important Vedic texts like Taittiriya, Maitrayani, Kathaka, Kathakapisthala and Vajasaneyi Samhitas, all the major Brahmana texts, Srauta and Grhya Sutras very often deal with abhicara at various ritual contexts. Even in the Rgveda Samhita itself one finds some elements of abhicara. It is not surprising that all important Vedic sacrifices include, more or less, some such harmful rituals inside their performances. Though some partial and limited works on this topic are published by few scholars, no major and systematic work on the entire topic has been done so far. This book contains a systematic study on the Vedic abhicara taking its various aspects in to consideration. Its basic materials are taken from all the important ritual texts and thereby not limited to any particular branch or class of the literature. Thus the book provides an entire pen-picture of the Vedic abhicara to a reader." (jacket).
