In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. 'Graeme MacCormick is a descendent of early New Zealand settlers on both sides of his family. His mother's family were of Irish descent and his father's family were from Scotland. Graeme and his brother became borderer at Kings Preparatory School after the death of their mother and during their fat…her's absence while serving as the Commanding Officer of the NZ Medical Corps in the Middle East during the Second World War. Graeme was influenced by his Chapel experiences and the Anglican ministry at both the Prep School and King's College and has been a committed Christian throughout his life. His faith has been evident both in his personal life and his career in the legal profession. Graeme has been in legal practice, served on the Human Rights Commission and as a Judge in the Family Court in New Zealand. He has been asked to speak at many public gatherings. Some of these addresses have been recorded in this book and reflect his ethical stance emerging from his firm Christian faith. He has also recollected events in his personal and professional life which reflect his deep love for his family; his experiences in the work place; and an appreciation of many long established friendships.'--Publisher's description. Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. A Kindly Christian Gentleman. William Garden Cowie, Bishop of Auckland 1869 -1902. By Frank Wright. Paperback, near fine condition, minor shelf/edge wear. 295 pages. Published by Polygraphia Ltd, 2007. ISBN: 1877332429. Photographs. William Garden Cowie was the first Bishop of Auckland in what is… now known as the Anglican tradition. He was bishop from 1869 until his death in 1902. Cowie was the successor to Bishop Selwyn and he was in fact Selwyn's choice as the Auckland synod had delegated the appointment of his successor to Selwyn himself . William Cowie read Classics at Cambridge and after ordination spent time as an Indian Army chaplain, an experience which he never forgot. He came to New Zealand from an English parish and established a reputation for devoted pastoral ministry. He travelled constantly and arduously in the primitive conditions of the time. Remote groups welcomed his visits and his friendly manner. It was said that he made no enemies. Cowie was a capable administrator and many present day institutions within the church owe their origin to him or his wife Eliza. Bishop Cowie was very much a part of the early history of Auckland and his influence extended well beyond the confines of his church. Among other foundations the Institute for the Blind (now known as The Foundation of the Blind) owes its origins to his efforts. This is an interesting account of Bishop Cowie's life and work. Softcover. Zustand: Very Good. Frederick Thatcher trained as an architect in England before immigrating to New Zealand, arriving in December of 1843. His original intention was to farm land bought through the New Zealand Company in New Plymouth. A move to Auckland brought closer contact with Bishop G. A. Selwyn, the first bishop of New Zealand. Thatcher worked for Selwyn on many of the churches and other buildings in the Auckland area, and in particular on the buildings for St John's College. Despite his skills, architecture was not Frederick Thatcher's main employment. He was for some years, in two separate periods, a private secretary to Governor Grey and was closely involved with Auckland's early development. He travelled widely with Grey and this account of Thatcher's life gives the reader many interesting glimpses of the episodes in which he was involved as well as the buildings for which he was responsible, many of which still stand. The title of this biography arises from Bishop Selwyn's assessment of Thatcher who became a candidate for ordination and trained at St John's College in the late 1840s. After ordination he was the first minister of St Matthew's in Hobson Street. Health problems led to a spell in England from where he was once again recruited, this time by the first bishop of Wellington, C. J. Abraham. Perhaps Thatcher's crowning memorial is Old St Paul's church in Wellington. It stands as a witness to a great architect and devoted pastor. Large; Signed. 297 pages.
