Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone.' Blaise PascalIn Pensées, Blaise Pascal dissects the anatomy of modern anxiety. Centuries before the invention of the screen, this seventeenth-century mathematician recognized that our endless pursuit of entertainment, status, and busyness is nothing but a frantic flight from our own mortality. His fragmentary masterpiece of cynical observation and moral philosophy uses sharp aphorisms and clinical logic to expose the absurdity of human vanity. He argues that we chase power and drown ourselves in noise simply because the silence of our own existence is too terrifying to endure.Serving as an intellectual shock to the system, the book dismantles the mechanisms of our self-deception and demands that we finally stop running. For a culture suffocating under the weight of constant amusement, his ruthless clarity offers a necessary and profound confrontation with reality. This Polis & Praxis Edition Includes: - Original Introduction: Why should we read Pensées today A new essay exploring Pascal's striking relevance to our modern age of digital distraction and existential dread.- Detailed Author Biography: A compelling look at the brief, intense life of the mathematical genius who turned his brilliant mind to the darkest questions of human existence.- Curated Further Reading: A hand-picked reading list connecting Pascal to the great tradition of existential tension and pessimism, featuring works by Kierkegaard, Camus, Cioran, and Dostoevsky.Who Should Read This Book If you are exhausted by toxic positivity or drawn to the uncompromising realism of writers like Emil Cioran and Arthur Schopenhauer, this book is essential reading.About the Polis & Praxis Gray SeriesThe Gray Series is a curated collection of texts for the disenchanted. In a universe that often feels cold and indifferent, these works reject easy comforts in favor of hard truths. Rooted in the traditions of cynicism, pessimism, and existentialism, this series brings together the voices of poets and philosophers who faced the void without blinking. It explores how we can build meaning and dignity even when the sky is empty. These are books for navigating the twilight of the modern age: a library for the lucid.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. Du Bois - A Landmark in African American Literature and History'The cost of liberty is less than the price of repression.' - W.E.B. Du BoisFirst published in 1903, The Souls of Black Folk is one of the most powerful and enduring works ever written on race in America. Blending history, sociology, memoir, and sharp political critique, Du Bois exposes the realities of life behind 'the Veil' of racial prejudice and introduces his groundbreaking concept of double-consciousness-the divided identity forced upon African Americans by a society that denies their full humanity.More than a book, this is a manifesto for freedom. Du Bois challenges the compromises of his time, critiques Booker T. Washington's program of accommodation, and envisions the rise of the 'Talented Tenth'-leaders who would uplift the entire race through education, art, and struggle. His words lit a fire in the early 20th century and remain just as urgent and prophetic today.More than a century after its first publication, The Souls of Black Folk continues to challenge, inspire, and demand reflection. Whether you are a student, activist, or simply a reader seeking to understand America's ongoing struggle with race, this edition will connect you directly to the voice of one of the greatest thinkers of the modern era.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - I have spent more than two decades inside the contradictions of American education as a teacher, instructional coach, principal, and director at an educational technology startup. With a doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies and a deep interest in conflict theory, I have come to see schools not just as learning spaces, but as institutions shaped by power, structure, and competing demands. This book grows out of lived experience. It was formed in long meetings, difficult reforms, moments of fatigue, and the rare but powerful instances when honest dialogue changed a school's direction. At its core, this book argues that burnout is not simply personal weakness. It is often a structural signal. Teachers are asked to cultivate curiosity while meeting rigid accountability standards. They are encouraged to build democratic classrooms within systems that reward compliance. When educators feel exhausted, I no longer see that primarily as a psychological problem. I see it as a moral and institutional tension that deserves to be examined rather than hidden.Throughout these chapters, I explore how teacher preparation and leadership development might address that tension directly. What if we helped educators interpret their exhaustion politically and ethically instead of privately and shamefully What if we treated institutional contradiction as something to study and reshape, not something to endure in silence This is not a cynical book. It is a call to courage. I believe in the democratic promise of education, but I have learned that dialogue, dissent, and critical participation must be cultivated intentionally. Leadership, as I understand it now, is less about charisma and more about moral steadiness. It is the discipline of protecting reflection and honesty even when compliance would be easier. In the end, I argue that mentoring individuals is not enough. If progressive education is to survive, institutions themselves must change. Policies, routines, and cultures must align with the values we claim to hold. This book is an invitation to look directly at the cracks in our systems and to consider what sustained institutional courage might require.…
