Manuskript / Papierantiquität
Zustand: Very Good. FOURTEEN ORIGINAL FINISH SAMPLES REVEAL HOW AMERICANS CHOSE THEIR INTERIORS A CENTURY AGO. A vivid early-20th-century advertising brochure issued by the Pitcairn Varnish Company, combining bold chromolithographic design with applied color swatches illustrating interior wood finishes. Intended as a practical sales and instruction piece, the brochure demonstrates how varnish products were marketed through both visual appeal and hands-on material evidence during the pre-Depression home-improvement boom. Physical description: Tri-fold card-stock advertising brochure. Measures approximately 3.5 × 6.25 inches folded, opening to approximately 10.25 inches wide. Printed in color on the exterior panels with black-and-white instructional text inside. The central panel features 14 applied varnish sample swatches, labeled by finish and color. Includes printed price list and detailed instructions for finishing floors and interior woodwork. Condition statement: The brochure is carefully handled, with even age-toning throughout. Minor offsetting from adjacent sample swatches is present, consistent with original materials. The gold sample shows some dulling. Folds remain sound; text and color graphics retain strong legibility and visual impact. Original advertising brochure, ca. 1920. Scarcity note: No comparable copies located in current online trade listings or in OCLC/WorldCat searches. Applied-sample brochures of this type were utilitarian by design and rarely survive intact with all swatches present. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - This brochure captures a transitional moment in American advertising when manufacturers moved beyond printed claims and allowed customers to evaluate products through direct physical experience. The inclusion of fourteen actual varnish samples enabled homeowners and tradesmen to compare color, sheen, and finish quality firsthand, while accompanying instructions emphasized durability, cleanliness, and the modern standards expected of contemporary interiors. Produced by the Pitcairn Varnish Company of Milwaukee and Newark during the early twentieth century, the piece documents changing domestic tastes and the growing market for standardized interior finishes. It also reflects broader developments within the American coatings industry, including the consolidation of manufacturers that would eventually link Pitcairn with the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company. Today, the brochure serves as both a sales artifact and a tangible record of Jazz Age home improvement culture. Subjects: Paint and varnish advertising, Color sample swatches, Interior finishes, Home improvement history, Milwaukee manufacturing, Early industrial marketing, Decorative coatings,Advertising ephemera, Industrial design, Early 20th-century trade literature. Tri-fold card-stock advertising brochure with applied color samples.

Bounty after the famed mutiny. Many of the people on the island are the descendants of the original settlers. The Pitcairn miscellany is still around. As of December 2012 the future of TPM was reviewed by the Pitcairn Island Council. In March 2013, a native of Pitcairn Island, Jacqui Christian, was appointed the editor instead of annexing the role to that of the expatriate school teacher. Ms Christian hopes to build the publication readership up once more from its current 248 subscribers to the 2000+ subscribers it had in the past with the objective of using this historical asset to produce revenue for the Pitcairn government. Pitcairn currently receives budgetary aid from the UK as a result of declining demand for stamp and coin sales and increased operating costs for the island.
