Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Penguin English Library Edition of The Secret Agent by Joseph Conrad'Madness and despair! Give me that for a lever, and I'll move the world'In the only novel Conrad set in London, The Secret Agent communicates a profoundly ironic view of human affairs. The story is woven around an attack on the Greenwich Observatory in 1894 masterminded by Verloc, a Russian spy working for the police, and ostensibly a member of an anarchist group in Soho. His masters instruct him to discredit the anarchists in a humiliating fashion, and when his evil plan goes horribly awry, Verlac must deal with the repercussions of his actions. The Penguin English Library - 100 editions of the best fiction written in English, from the eighteenth century and the very first novels, to the beginning of the First World War. 288 pp. Deutsch.

Buch
Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Private detective Lew Archer has better things to do than take on an investigation for Alex Kincaid, a young man claiming that his new bride, Dolly, has gone missing. Snapped by a hotel photographer on the day of their wedding, the beautiful girl vanished only hours after and Alex has heard nothing since. But when Archer begins digging, he finds evidence that links Dolly to brutal murders that span two decades, and a terrible secret. In this byzantine and compelling tale, Ross Macdonald explores the darkest experiences that can bind a family together - and tear it apart.Ross Macdonald's Lew Archer mysteries rewrote the conventions of the detective novel with their credible, humane hero, and with Macdonald's insight and moral complexity won new literary respectability for the hardboiled genre previously pioneered by Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler. They have also received praise from such celebrated writers as William Goldman, Jonathan Kellerman, Eudora Welty and Elmore Leonard. 352 pp. Deutsch.

Buch
Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Philosophical writings on 'the good life' by the great Roman orator, in a vital new translation In the first century BC, Marcus Tullius Cicero, Roman orator, statesman, and defender of republican values, created these philosophical treatises on such diverse and trenchant topics as friendship, religion, death, fate, and scientific inquiry. This lucid and lively new translation renders the great Roman's writings accessible to modern readers as never before. Cicero was a pragmatist at heart, but his philosophies were frequently personal and ethical, drawn not from abstract reasoning but from careful observation of the world. The resulting work reminds us of the importance of social ties, the question of free will, and the justification of creative endeavor. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Penguin English Library Edition of Dubliners by James Joyce'Every night as I gazed up at the window I said softly to myself the word paralysis. It had always sounded strangely in my ears . But now it sounded to me like the name of some maleficent and sinful being. It filled me with fear, and yet I longed to be nearer to it and to look upon its deadly work'From a child grappling with the death of a fallen priest, to a young woman's dilemma over whether to elope to Argentina with her lover, to the dance party at which a man discovers just how little he really knows about his wife, these fifteen stories bring the gritty realism of existence in Joyce's native Dublin to life. With Dubliners, James Joyce reinvented the art of fiction, using a scrupulous, deadpan realism to convey truths that were at once blasphemous and sacramental. The Penguin English Library - 100 editions of the best fiction in English, from the eighteenth century and the very first novels to the beginning of the First World War. 211 pp. Englisch.
