A very fine/as new copy, carefully dark stored by ourselves since publication. This edition marked 'Not for resale', with no printed barcode or price to rear cover. The book was distributed free with copies of The Times newspaper on Saturday 17th May 2008. The promotion was conceived as part of the Ian Fleming Centenary and the foreword is by the late Peter Janson Smith, literary agent to Ian Fleming. This is the first time these two short stories had appeared together in a single, separate volume; Octopussy was originally paired with The Living Daylights. First edition of this James Bond continuation novel. Octavo, original boards, pictorial endpapers. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with light shelfwear. The story centers on Bond's investigation into Dr Julius Gorner, a megalomaniac chemist with a deep-seated hatred of England. Faulks wrote the book in the style of Fleming, and the novel carried the credit "Sebastian Faulks writing as Ian Fleming"; he also took the same timeframe as Fleming, setting the novel in 1967, following the events in Fleming's last novel The Man with the Golden Gun. He ignored the influences of the other Bond continuation authors and the films, producing a characterization of Bond in the style of Fleming's. The novel was broadly well received by critics and went into the best-seller lists by the end of the first week of sales, selling 44,093 copies in four days to become the fastest-selling fiction book after the Harry Potter titles.

In the prize-winning binding of silver-grey cloth with a silenced Walther PPK motif to upper, burgundy endpapers. Complete with the wraparound sleeve, which is gummed together at rear (with some bleed-through, as inevitably found). A lovely fine copy, carefully dark-stored by ourselves since publication. The true first hardcover edition of this title, preceded by a paperback edition in the Penguin Modern Classics series, which did not include the introduction. Contains all of Fleming's nine original James Bond short stories and novellas, previously issued in hardback as as For Your Eyes Only (1960, five stories) and Octopussy (1966, two stories). Two of the titles have never been included in a UK hardcover edition. The majority of tales are set in holiday locations such as the Seychelles, the Bahamas, the Jamaican coast, the Lido in Venice, a lakeside summerhouse in Vermont and the Mediterranean port of Santa Maria. Large octavo. Original brown leather covers with red stitching, spine and front board lettered and blocked in silver, edges red, red leather doublures, black endpapers, black silk bookmarker. With pewter car model housed within contents. Housed in clear Perspex slipcase. A fine copy. First edition, Bentley Special Series edition, number 186 of 300 copies. This large paper issue is printed on Munken paper and includes a foreword by the Chief Designer of Bentley Motors and a brief biography of Ian Fleming. The "Burnt Oak" leather used for the covering material is the same as that used for the upholstery in Bentley cars, and the red leather within is the same as the hide used on the dashboard. The contents are die-cut to the bottom of the folios to house a pewter-cast model of the Bentley R-Type convertible, driven by Bond in this title. This copy is from the significant Ian Fleming collection of Martin Schøyen (b.1940), with his bookplate. Schøyen's private collection of manuscripts, which span all cultures and all time periods, is one of the largest and most comprehensive of its kind. Gilbert, p. 613; The Schøyen Collection No. 384.
