Zustand: FINE. First printing. A collection of pages from 3 of his notebooks, in which Baraka merges the printed word with graphic design, covering a period of over 30 years, from the 1950s when he was in Greenwich Village with Frank O'Hara and Larry Rivers. Published in conjunction with an exhibit being held at the University of Charleston. Although the introduction mentions 450 copies, the editor, William Plumley stated that the actual edition was 250, of which approximately half were signed on the title page. This is one of the SIGNED copies.(Baraka has also corrected the misprint in his name on the title page) Baraka defies classification - a beat poet, a playright, an artist, a member of the New York school - but perhaps most proudly a black activist. 34 pages, large format (approximately 8x11), inside sheets matte finish, fine paper, printed in black and white, brief introduction, biographical information and back cover by Plumley. Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. Original black ink and marker drawing of Allen Ginsberg's desk. Measuring 8½" x 11". Composed on the recto of a letter from William Plumley, president emeritus of Mountain State Press (see below). Near fine with two small tape remnants at the topedge and two creases from being mail. [With] a copy of the published broadside, measuring 8½" x 10½", that is numbered ("22/50") and Signed by Ginsberg, with accompanying page with publishing details and housed in a black envelope with slip stapled on restating the limitation. Fine. The origin of this broadside is described in the Plumley letter, which is a request for a drawing from Ginsberg for an intended, but never published, book of drawings by American writers, to help raise funds for Mountain State Press. Plumley's says that he has already received "original pieces" from Tennessee Williams and Gregory Corso, and asks: "Would you help?" Ginsberg does, as he explains in an Autograph Notes Signed at the bottom of the letter: "Dear Mr. Plumley: See other side for Doodle. Send me a copy of book, thanks, Allen Ginsberg." The original drawing includes several elements not included in the published broadside: Ginsberg's Signature, a handwritten title ("Desk at the moment"), and brief note ("2:37 AM Answering Mail November 14, 1981"). Despite the limitation, the broadside is very uncommon with *OCLC* locating only three copies. The art, obviously, is unique. Certainly one of the more quirky pieces of Ginsbergiana.…

The colophon also discusses the background of the poem, which was inspired by the poet's visit to a site in Kiev of an atrocity against the Jewish population. Two likely computer-generated letter-sized sheets annotated and Signed by Yevtushenko (the poem was translated by James Ragan with the author), accompanied by a copy of the 11" x 14" silkscreened broadside, the poem's first appearance. The typescript is near fine with very light creasing and the broadside is fine, laid into a plain envelope with a colophon sheet. The broadside was issued in an edition of 150 Signed copies. Yevtushenko published two broadsides with the Parchment Gallery in 1996, and we presume that Yevtushenko was at the University of Charleston as an artist-in-residence for the writing and publication.…
