In den Warenkorbvery good dust-jacket, cover price $35.00, very good white hardcover. FOSL, CATHERINE. Subversive southerner: Anne Braden and the struggle for racial justice in the Cold War South. Foreword by Angela Davis. New York, N.Y. ; Houndmills, Basingstoke, Hampshire, England: Palgrave Macmillan, 2002, stated First Edition, and 1st print…ing number line ending with 1, xxix, 418pp., . "Anne McCarty Braden (1924--2006) rejected her segregationist, privileged past to become one of the civil rights movement's staunchest white allies. In 1954 she was charged with sedition by McCarthy-style politicians who played on fears of communism to preserve southern segregation. Though Braden remained controversial -- even within the civil rights movement -- in 1963 she became one of only five white southerners whose contributions to the movement were commended by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in his famed "Letter from Birmingham Jail." Braden's activism ultimately spanned nearly six decades, making her one of the most enduring white voices against racism in modern U.S. history. Subversive Southerner is more than a riveting biography of an extraordinary southern white woman; it is also a social history of how racism, sexism, and anticommunism intertwined in the twentieth-century South as ripples from the Cold War divided the emerging civil rights movement." - CONTENTS: The Power of Place -- A White Southern Childhood -- Intellectual Awakening -- Alabama Newspaperwoman -- Political Awakening -- Marriage and Movement -- The Wade Case : No Turning Back -- Fighting Back : The 1950s Resistance Movement -- A Voice Crying in the Wilderness : Early SCEF Years -- The Mass Civil Rights Movement : Beginning of a New Day -- Opening Up the Southern Police State -- End of an Era -- The Next Three Decades: The Struggle Continues. 9780312294878 ISBN 0312294875.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. First printing [stated]. xv, [1], 332 pages. Illustrations. Abbreviations. Appendices. Notes. Bibliography. Index. This appears to be the first title in the series Nuclear Weapons and International Security since 1945. Richard Moore was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Mountbatten Centre for Inter…national Studies at the University of Southampton, UK. He studied history and international relations at the University of Cambridge, and his Ph.D. dissertation for the University of Hull was published as The Royal Navy and Nuclear Weapons (2001). This work is a study of the political, military and technical aspects of Britain's nuclear weapons programme under the Macmillan government, contrasting Britain's perceived political decline with its growth in technological mastery and military nuclear capability. Important reading for anyone interested in the history and military technology of the cold war. This new history, based on extensive archive research, weaves together the political, military and technical histories of Britain's nuclear weapons programme under the Conservative governments of Harold Macmillan and Alex Douglas-Home. It contrasts Britain's perceived political decline and reliance on the United States with growth in available military nuclear capability. In summer 1958, around 50 hand-built atomic bombes were available in the UK, and just one fully successful British two-state megaton thermonuclear device had been tested; by 1964, despite setbacks, Britain had hundreds of well-engineered nuclear weapons, a well-exercised low-level bomber force, and advanced new warheard and weapons programmes underway. The book also presents new evidence and analysis on key political events of the period, including the Blue Streak cancellation and the Skybolt crisis. It should be read by anyone interested in the history and military technology of the Cold War.
