Original green blind stamped cloth lettered gilt on backstrip. Lacks front free endpaper and half title if required, upper and lower hinge repaired with strips of paper, holding well, otherwise a good plus copy. Notwithstanding the title this is a complete reprint of "A Wonder Book for Boys and Girls" first published in 1852 by Ticknor, Reed, and Fields, now selling for up to $6,000. Note: This is a very early edition of this title, certainly not later than 1859 as the last date of a book published by Knight and Son in the British Library is 1859 and Knight and Son published "Tanglewood Tales, for Girls and Boys: being a Second Wonder Book" in 1855 and 1856 after the Chapman and Hall first English edition of Tanglewood Tales.…

8vo, pp. viii, 148; with a preliminary list of subscribers on pp. iii-viii; a fine copy with the lower and outer edges uncut, top edge gilt; in modern boards. First edition: a poem on the passions of youth, ambitions of middle age and the laments of old age. Each age is seen through the metaphor of a season, with the poem outwardly resembling Thomson's Seasons. The Viscount can't his present title brook. Pines for an Earldom, or the stile of Duke. The needy Curate's well-form'd plans presage, Some good fat rectory or vicarage. (p. 97) William Carwithen (1751/2-1824) was the son of the rector of Manaton, Devon, and came up to Oxford in 1776; he took his BA in 1784 and succeeded his father - who had died when he was very young - in the rectory, holding the incumbency of Manaton until his death. The subscription list includes many west country clergy and a few titled folk from the same counties as well. Very rare: ESTC online locates copies at the British Library, Bodleian, Cambridge and Exeter in England, and only the National Library of Australia elsewhere.…

12mo, pp. [3], 423, [1]; engraved frontispiece, two folding maps (one hand-colored), seven engraved plates, woodcuts throughout text; original blue paper-covered boards with cream printed shelfback; light wear to spine and edges, textblock untrimmed, foxing on a couple of pages, book labels of F.H.T. Streatfield and John and Myfanwy Piper on upper pastedown. While the title page is dated 1809, and the final page of advertisements list books published about that date, the spine is printed with the date 1814. We have found no evidence of an 1814 edition, and in fact all sixth editions on record are dated 1809, so it is possible the binding was put on remaindered sheets at a later date.…

8vo in fours, pp. [xiv], 108; with a list of subscribers on pp. [v]-[xii]; disbound. An unusual collection of Guildford-printed poetry of uncertain authorship, which is normally attributed to Charles Austen Jacques. Certainly, the author was clearly from the town, and among the subscribers is Charles Jacques, bookseller, of Chichester; but there are many other Chichester subscribers - so many, in fact, that one wonders why it was not printed there. I can find no other record of Charles Austen Jacques, but the tradition seems well established and he was very likely the son of the bookseller who took four copies. The clue to the Guildford connexion must be that, although from Chichester, the author seems to have attended Guildford Royal Grammar School, where he wrote a prologue for a performance of Richard III in December 1774 (here printed on pp. 51-3). Among his closest friends was one Daniel Foot (a poem addressed to him is on pp. 61-4), who also subscribed: young Daniel died in October 1777, just before a volume of his own poems appeared. There was a Charles Jacques (or Jaques) who is known to have been a clockmaker and watchmaker in Chichester in the later 18th century, and a man of that name - surely his son or even grandson - was alive in Chichester in 1851, but nothing else seems to be recorded of his poetical achievements. Among the subscribers is Richard Valpy (1754-1836), who was later to become the distinguished headmaster of Reading School: he had been at Guildford RGS too, almost certainly as a contemporary of the author's. Oddly enough, however, William Hayley - the most notable local patron of letters in Chichester - did not subscribe. Jackson p. 49. This is one of only three collections of original verse printed at Guildford in the 18th century, and very rare: ESTC locates just six copies in Britain and five elsewhere (Folger, Harvard, NYPL, Yale and Turnbull (Wellington, NZ)).…
