Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The king and his wives-letters and documents History is full of notable figures, but far fewer in number are those who have become iconic. An indisputably iconic figure, even among the many great kings of England, is the towering figure of the Tudor monarch, King Henry VIII. He was, of course, the father of Queen Elizabeth I, Gloriana, an equally renowned monarch of her own golden age. She sought always to be and be seen as her father's daughter, but posterity preserves what it will of a life in the public consciousness and so aside from Henry's unmistakable and imposing personal appearance what is most remembered of him by many is that he was married on six occasions and habitually terminated his relationships with an axe at the executioner's block-though this occurred only twice perhaps indicating more moderation in Henry's character as a husband than he is usually credited with. There has always been something seductively attractive about this powerful man, capable of great tenderness and romance, an artist, poet and musician-and yet a ruthless and unscrupulous tyrant capable of incredible insensitivity and cruelty. This volume contains an engrossing selection of correspondence, reports and other documents concerning Henry and his wives. The central part of the book is a famous collection of love letters sent by the king to his second wife Anne Boleyn, one of his spouses who lost her head to be superceded by another beauty of the court Jane Seymour, one of Anne's ladies in waiting. In this special and unique Leonaur edition these letters are added to by the inclusion of correspondence and other documents concerning the fate of Henry's sometimes unfortunate women and the events that surrounded them. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Cavalryman, Infantryman and Prisoner of WarThis personable first hand account of the American Civil War was written by William Tyler of the 9th Illinois Cavalry of the Union Army. It is an eye-witness narrative where the good nature of the author shines through the text and, as a consequence, as well as being a first rate source work of the horse soldiers in blue it is also a story full of humour, adventure and anecdote. The first part of the narrative deals with the business of war from the perspective of a trooper in the Union Cavalry, but Tyler's role was soon to change due to his singular success in the carrying of an important dispatch. As often happens, especially in military life, having demonstrated some talent Tyler became the 'expert on hand' and was given further dispatches to carry through perilous, enemy occupied country on a regular basis. He gives the impression that he relished the independence of action and the adventures that came his way. Discharged after a wound, Tyler re-enlisted, not to return to his old unit but in the 95th Illinois Infantry because he wished to be close to his brother who had joined that regiment. In a battle near Guntown, Mississippi, against Forrest's Confederates, Tyler was captured and sent to the notorious Andersonville prisoner of war jail. In the final part of his book he describes the appalling conditions and brutality suffered by the Union men in Andersonville which makes for revealing if harrowing reading.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - From thrown rock to artillery shellAlbert Manucy's book examines the history of artillery from the earliest times to the late nineteenth century and describes how missiles were employed in conflicts prior to the Great War period. Every type of projectile throwing machine is considered from the earliest Ballista and Trebuchet to sophisticated ship-board naval guns and those designed for the fortified emplacements of coastal defences which were employed well into the twentieth century. Manucy not only describes the weapons but gives interesting insights into their performance and capabilities. He goes on to examine the use of gunpowder from its development to its employment in weaponry and describes many solid shot weapons and their respective specifications. The development of projectiles themselves is discussed-and their many varieties are detailed, including early rockets-as well as the tools employed by the gunners who fired the guns and employed the ammunition. This most engrossing book concludes with instruction on the practise of gunnery with explanations of the process of firing various weapons and includes many diagrams, charts of weapons and projectiles and line illustrations of gun crews demonstrating the sequence of firing. An excellent overview of the subject.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - My First Campaignby J. W. GrantReminiscences of Service with the Twelfth Rhode Island Volunteersby Pardon E. TillinghastRhode Islanders for the UnionThis American Civil War volume by Joseph Grant and Pardon E. Tillinghast brings together two accounts that today would be unlikely to see individual re-publication because of their short length. They concern the time the authors spent with their regiment of Rhode Island Volunteers during the conflict. Grant particularly was much concerned with the activities of the regiment and also became a significant contributor to the substantial published history of the regiment. The twelfth was one of the so called 'Nine Month Regiments' though it actually served for ten months. Whilst the regiment's service was comparatively short it earned the appellation of 'the Trotting Twelfth' partly as a result of its incredible march from Nicholasville to Jamestown, Kentucky-some 100 miles under broiling sun-in six days without the loss of a single man. Indeed the regiment's marching abilities became legendary and its name well earned as it pursued the elusive Morgan and his cavalry across Kentucky to prevent him raiding into Ohio. This included a lively affair with the notable Confederate raider horse soldiers at Green River, Kentucky. Grant's view of the Battle of Fredericksburg is particularly useful and indeed he was responsible for the portion of the greater regimental history concerning it. At Fredericksburg in the closing month of 1862, Burnside had to ferry his army across the Rappahannock River in the face of fire from the enemy on the opposite bank and once across fight through the streets of the town before assaulting well prepared Confederate entrenched positions under Lee on Maryes Heights. The affair was a notable one-sided catastrophe for the Union Army which lost nearly 13,000 men killed, wounded, missing or captured-more than twice that of the enemy. Grant, Tillinghast and their Rhode Island comrades, irrespective of their short service, more than earned their right to proclaim themselves seasoned 'veterans.'Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A first rate Civil War memoir of an outstanding Union Army regimentThe author of this book, Charles Fuller, was a young officer of the Union army at war with the Confederacy of Jefferson Davis during the American Civil War. He has written an excellent account of his time serving with 'the Clinton Guard,' the 61st New York Volunteer Infantry. Given the numerous infantry regiments of the Union Army it is often difficult for general readers to differentiate between them and decide which first hand accounts are worthy of serious attention. All are essential as source works, but some are more entertainingly written than others-Fuller's book falls into this category. Firstly because he was a naturally good author with a keen eye, but most importantly because of the exemplary and vigorous service of his regiment. The 61st New York was rarely, if ever, up to strength, yet it repeatedly found itself embroiled in the fiercest of the fighting, casualties were very high in proportion to the men engaged and Fuller himself was seriously wounded eventually, losing both an arm and a leg. The 61st saw action at Fair Oaks, Antietam-where it was involved in a brilliant flanking action on Bloody Lane which is well described here-Fredericksburg and the charge on Marye's Heights, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, where they went into the wheat-field 93 strong and came out of it with just 31 men, and so on through the conflict, being engaged in at least another fifteen major engagements before joining in the final pursuit of Lee's army at Appomattox. Fuller, who took part in the campaigns of his regiment in full measure has left us a superb and intimate record of his time as a soldier, the men who fought with him and the actions of a magnificent regiment.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A bikers war-compellingly recountedThe highly dangerous task of the aide-de-camp was often to carry urgent despatches with essential calls to action across the field of battle. The young men chosen for the job were invariably dashing, brave and prepared to take risks to achieve their objectives. They were, of course, always expert horsemen. The age of the military horseman had not quite come to a close at the time of the First World War, but-as with most forms of progress-he was sharing duties with that which would eventually replace him, the machines of the new age. Now there was a another breed of 'daredevil,' though necessarily 'cut from the same cloth.' The motorcycle despatch riders were a new service created in an age of innovation. All were so called 'amateur' soldiers though immediately at least ranked corporal so that they could, by British Army convention, address officers directly. These were invariably intelligent, accomplished young men drawn from the professions or universities. Their creed was the same as that of their horse mounted predecessors-the messages they carried had to get through and to deliver them motorcyclists often had to outpace charging Uhlans. Many of them ended their careers tangled among the wreckage of their 'bikes.' The author of this book has written a thrilling first hand account of his experiences riding military motorcycles along the front lines during the early stages of the First World War. Later as an officer he took command of a unit of 'buzzers,' whose job it was to maintain telephone links. A highly entertaining book and thoroughly recommended to all those interested in motorcycles, motorcycling and the Great War in Europe.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The account of one of the smallest soldiers in blueGeorge Ulmer, the author of this book, is unusually distinguishable from many of the soldiers who penned their recollections of their time in the Union Army during the great civil war between the states. Ulmer was no strapping youth straight from the farm, or mature man fighting for deeply held convictions; by his own admission, as war broke out he was 'a midget of a boy; a barefooted ragged news-boy in the city of New York' where he made much needed money by selling newspapers after proclaiming contents they did not possess. Ulmer's mother died in 1861 and his father moved the family to a farm in Maine to provide them with a healthier lifestyle. As the war progressed, Ulmer's brother joined the army to fight and he too burned to go. His attempts to be mustered into a regiment were repeatedly met with rejection and derisive laughter. However, Ulmer though both very young and small was also a street-wise urchin from the city who knew how to get his own way and eventually, in 1863 he found himself in the ranks of the 8th Maine wearing the smallest uniform that could be issued to him-it 'looked as if it was enough make a suit for an entire family.' He became something of a mascot to the 'Maine giants' of his regiment and the diminutive Ulmer had a fair degree of leeway in his movements becoming a champion forager-something for which his background had ideally qualified him. Of course this remains the account of a fighting soldier and Ulmer found himself in action at Fort Powhatan, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. This is an enjoyable, charming and often humorous recollection, candidly told in manhood by someone who remembered himself as a canny but mischievous 'young devil.'Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Female Soldier; or, the Surprising Life and Adventures of Hannah SnellFrances Scanagatti or, the Female Soldierby AnonymousThe women who marched to warFemale soldiers are always something of a curiosity and these two brief accounts, one British the other Italian, might not have seen individual re-publication in modern times so this special Leonaur edition brings them together. The accounts-both originally published anonymously-tell of two women who joined the ranks of the army in disguised as men and fought undiscovered. The most famous of the two is Hannah Snell. Born in 1723 she married a James Summ who subsequently deserted her, so she adopted male clothes to search for him only to discover that he had been executed for murder. Her claims regarding her participation, as a soldier of Guises regiment, in the Jacobite Rising of 1745, led by Charles Stewart, have been questioned, but she certainly joined the Royal Marines and sailed to India where she took part in the capture of Pondicherry from the French and in the Battle of Devicotta. She was wounded no less than twelve times and despite eventually revealing her gender was awarded a pension for her services. Frances Scanagatti was born in Milan, Italy in 1781 and her interest in military life was evident from an early age. The account of her progress under arms is not as specific in its detail as present day readers might like, but it seems clear that she served in the Austrian Army at the time of the wars with Revolutionary France. The life of another female soldier, of the British Army of the Marlborough period, the renowned Mother Ross, is also available as a Leonaur edition.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands. …

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The women of the Red Cross at warThe author of this book, Violetta Thurston was a trained Red Cross volunteer senior administrator and nurse sent to Belgium by the organisation in the early days of the First World War in charge of a party of British nurses expecting to assist wounded British soldiers. Instead, they arrived to find the country on the brink of collapse and the roads around the capital clogged with refugees fleeing the combat zone. They had just arrived in Brussels when the German Army marched in, ostensibly passing through, but in reality establishing its presence and becoming their first patients. Soon, and to her relief, Violetta moved to a hospital at Charleroi nursing the wounded irrespective of nationality. After a return to Brussels she was sent to Copenhagen in Denmark and then to the eastern front and the Red Cross operations in Warsaw, Poland before moving on towards Lodz-which was at that time under bombardment with the so called Red Cross 'Flying Column.' Working among Russian troops on the front lines Violetta and her team from the 'flying Column' moved into the trenches at Radzivlow where they undertook their difficult and humane work in close proximity to the German line and under constant firing. This book gives readers an insight into the work of the members of the Red Cross during the Great War and illustrates the work that brave women undertook in most trying and dangerous conditions.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Petite bleu to pilote-a young American's flight into warThe author of this book, Dana Winslow, was a young American in Paris as France recruited men to fight the invading German forces of the Kaiser at the outbreak of the First World War. Feeling strongly for the plight and cause of the French, he immediately went to Les Invalides and there enlisted in the French Flying Corps as a trainee pilot. This vital first hand account is an essential source work of the period which reveals the training of the earliest French military aviators of the great conflict on the Western Front and it follows Winslow on his 'rite of passage' from inexperienced civilian, to lowly and little regarded aeronautical student (petit bleu) through his first perilous days in the combat zone to his time as an experienced and much prized pilote in the hostile skies over the trenches of the front lines. As may be expected, Winslow takes us to his war of dogfights, mid-air collisions, artillery spotting and reconnaissance in vivid-if humbly recounted-detail. Winslow's book is especially valuable as an insight into the variety of aircraft employed by the French during his time with them and he provides useful details as to their construction, abilities, applications and flying characteristics such-as those of the peculiar 'cut down' Bleriot that was 'the Penguin.' He also gives an interesting view of the business of military flying in wartime, which he distinguishes as entirely separate from piloting, as he describes it, as a mere 'conductor.' Accounts of battling in the air during the Great War are not common, so this volume is, of course, a welcome addition to their limited number and will be of interest to everyone interested in the subject.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A cavalier of the SouthThe author of this book was a trooper in the Confederate cavalry who published his recollections of the Civil War in later life. The 6th Virginia Cavalry, the unit to which he proudly belonged, was formed at Manassas in 1861 and it fought principally as part of the Army of Northern Virginia. Hopkins has structured his book as a chronology of conflicts and the list naturally includes some of the most significant engagements of the war. The 6th Virginia took an active role in Jackson's Valley Campaign at Second Bull Run, Brandy Station, Upperville, Fairfield, Bristow, Mine Run, the Wilderness, Todd's Tavern, Spotsylvania, Haw's Shop, Cold Harbor, Early's campaign in the Shenandoah Valley and the Appomattox Campaign at the close of hostilities. Only three of the regiment actually surrendered with Lee-the remainder cut through Union lines and were later disbanded. This excellent first hand account does not seek to be a regimental history-though much interesting information is given by the author-instead Hopkins has elected to concentrate on those events he witnessed himself and upon the accounts of other reliable writers. This is, of course, an excellent source work for any student of the horse soldiers in grey and will be a valuable addition to any American Civil War library.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Our Battery; or the Journal of Company B, 1st O. V. A.by O. P. CutterA Battery at Close Quartersby Henry M. NeilOhio Gunners-two vital accounts in one volumeGunners for the Union brings together two intimate views of the Ohio Volunteer Artillery. Books concerning the artillery of the Union army are necessarily-and for obvious reasons-fewer in number than those of the infantry or cavalry, so this special Leonaur edition is particularly useful. One of the accounts is quite small and would probably not have seen re-publication in its own right. The first, Our Battery, concerns the first regiment, and the second, A Battery at Close Quarters, the eleventh regiment. In Our Battery the reader joins author O. P Cutter and the 1st Ohio Volunteer Artillery at the engagements of Wild Cat, Mill Springs, Perryville, Stones River and Chickamauga. The story of Company B is entertainingly recounted and the book concludes with a roster role which will be useful to historians and genealogists. In Henry Neil's shorter account of the 11th, A Battery at Close Quarters, we read of the actions of his battery of guns at Iuka and Corinth. Following Neil's account is 'An Army Experience,' by John B. Sandborn, the Commanding Officer of the First Brigade, Seventh Division, Army of Tennessee. This is another eyewitness account of the Iuka and Corinth battles that describes Captain Neil's part in them. It was originally published in 1884 in the St Paul Pioneer Press newspaper of Minnesota. Keenly observed by an onlooker at the scene it is a valuable contribution to both this book and the historical record.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Riflemen on horsebackThe latter part of the 19th century returned to service a type of soldier who could trace his antecedents to the first dragoons-mounted men who would also fought on foot. Cavalry had specific roles to play, but in theatres of war involving huge distances or against fast moving, mobile and especially mounted enemies the requirement for the horse mounted infantryman ready to meet these challenges had become paramount. Never was the necessity for mounted infantry more apparent than upon the veldt of South Africa and against the flexible mounted commandos of the Boers. Several British infantry regiments included mounted contingents and the author of this book fought with one of the most highly regarded-the Kings Royal Rifles. There were few conflicts where the Rifles were not called upon to serve that did not see them involved in the thick of the action and the Boer War was no exception. All first hand accounts are invaluable source works, but in Crum the reader is fortunate to have a narrator who was involved in fierce close quarters skirmishing throughout most of his service. His descriptions of the fighting in which he and his riflemen were involved makes gripping reading. This Leonaur edition has been enhanced by the inclusion of several contemporary illustrations of the mounted infantry-and their close service comrades the Hussars-on campaign during the conflict. All those interested in the regiments, who once clad in green fought in front of Wellington's redcoats, will find much to engage them in this book.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Utah gunners against Dons and rebelsThis book about the Utah Batteries of light artillery as they served during the Spanish-American War, written by one of their number who resolved to complete the task even before the regiment left California for the Philippines, also benefits from being an authentic first-hand, eye-witness account which allows the reader to share in the more intimate aspects of their campaign. Some 350 strong, the Utah Gunners were only a small part of Greene's Brigade of 13,000 men, but their influence proved to be far more significant than their numbers might suggest. Sailing to Luzon in 1898, they first saw action against Spanish forces and Philippines under Aguinaldo, involvement in the hotly contested assault on Manila followed . They were later involved in operations against Tagalan tribesmen, against breastwork defences at Calcoon and San Lazarus Cemetery, and later at Sampaloe and Santa Mesa. The battery's actions were split between those on land-where traversing difficult terrain and tropical jungle they fought at Calumpit and San Fernando-and those afloat-where their guns were mounted onto river gunboats for fighting in at Morong, Santa Cruz, San Luiz and Candaba. The Utah gunners upheld the finest traditions of the light artillery, always ensuring that their guns were in action when and wherever they were needed irrespective of the difficulties involved. An excellent view of the Spanish-American War.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Lancers of the Queen on campaign in IndiaThe letters in this book were written by Brevet-Major Anson, of H. M 9th Lancers, to his wife who was residing at Kussowlee in the Himalayan foothills near Shimla. Anson was an experienced officer at the outbreak of the Indian Mutiny, with some twenty years service in the sub-continent, having fought at Punniar in the Gwalior War of 1843, at Sobraon, 1846, during the First Sikh War and Gujerat and Chillianwallah, 1849 and during the Second Sikh War. At the outbreak of the mutiny he was in command of a squadron of the 9th. His regiment, the 9th Queens Royal Lancers, had received their first posting to India in time to take part in the Gwalior War and during the Indian Mutiny of 1857 they served at the storm of Delhi and the capture and relief of Lucknow. The popular view is that they were awarded their famous nickname, 'the Delhi Spearmen' by the mutineers themselves. It is certain that the regiment deservedly earned its fierce reputation. It was highly regarded by others in the campaign and members of the regiment were awarded an astonishing twelve Victoria Crosses for acts of outstanding courage-more than awarded to any other cavalry regiment. Anson's intimate letters to his family were, of course, never originally intended to be published, but fortunately for posterity they have left us with a nonpareil record of the mutiny as a cavalry officer and mounted regiment experienced it, details of the every day life of a regiment of the Victorian era on campaign and a first hand reaction to the events of the Mutiny from someone who related-not with the benefit of reflection, but with the immediacy of reportage-events as they occurred. The book is of course all but unique, a source work of the highest order and is recommended.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Chitral-an iconic episode in the history of the British RajAnyone interested in the history of the British Empire in India and particularly of the post-mutiny Raj period will know that as the British moved into the wild mountainous country of the North West Frontier and Afghanistan they came to the limit of their influence and power on the sub continent. This was the 'burning border'-difficult if not impossible to control, occupied by fierce tribesmen ever ready to resist invaders and perpetually vulnerable to powers beyond it who might employ it as a corridor for incursions into Hindustan. This was the country of 'the Great Game,' made famous by Kipling, where, 'two thousand pounds of education drops to a ten-rupee jezail.' Chitral, situated in what is now northern Pakistan, was a challenge to the army of the Queen Empress Victoria and remains no less so for armies who have occupied it right up to modern times. It became the location of one of those 'back against the wall' struggles of grit, resolution and heroism which have become legendary in the history of the British Army ranking with episodes such as the defence of Rorkes Drift during the Zulu War or the broken square at Abu Klea in the Sudan. An isolated fort commanded by British officers and manned by Indian Army troops was besieged by hostile tribesmen and held out under the most extraordinary hardships until eventually relieved. As hostilities flared up throughout the region small units were attacked and often annihilated until the inevitable forces of retribution could be mustered and marched to the rescue and to restore imperial 'order.' This is a riveting book -which rapidly draws the reader from one action to the next-about an extremely interesting and event filled episode of the late Victorian era. It is augmented by first hand accounts from participants and benefits from numerous contemporary photographs which show the scenes of many of the actions described and the appearance and equipment of the protagonists; interesting maps and diagrams also illuminate the text.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Gordons in Afghanistan and South AfricaCharles Martin's riveting recollections of his time as a soldier in the ranks of the 92nd, the Gordon Highlanders in the latter part of the nineteenth century during the reign of Victoria, the Queen Empress, is an excellent example of the military first-hand account and will please any student of the period. Martin's service covered the years from the middle of the 1860s to the middle of the 1880s. This meant he accompanied his regiment to the Indian sub-continent and with them played a full, active and perilous part in the Second Afghan War. Martin's was an Afghan War at the sharp end and he provides us with an essential account of infantrymen fighting on the ground in this particularly inhospitable environment. The exploits of the highlanders at Kandahar are, of course, well known and Martin covers this period in detail. After the war the Gordons took passage to South Africa where the survivors of so many hard fought battles with the Afghans were faced with the outbreak of the First Boer War and were fated to take part in the disaster that was the Battle at Majuba Hill. On this exposed ground many a brave highlander fell to the ruthless efficiency and superb marksmanship of the Boers. Martin missed being on the hill by the merest coincidence. The sergeant who took his place was killed among his comrades. Martin graphically records the tragedy of Majuba and examines the cause of the appalling outcome using the first hand accounts of two men who fought there-this is a doubly interesting part of this book since these accounts have rarely appeared in print else where.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The first year of war on the Western FrontThe quality of medical and nursing care available to British soldiers on campaign had improved immeasurably since the days of the Crimean War in the middle of the nineteenth century when Florence Nightingale and her nurses had cared for wounded men who could scarcely believe that her presence was not other worldly. By the time of the First World War the organisation of medical care had become a fixture of the military establishment, though, of course, this was to be a war like no other. The reader joins the author of this book in the first days of the conflict and through the pages of her diary we follow her experiences on the Western Front as she cared for the wounded from the actions on the Aisne through the First Battle of Ypres and to the fighting to the middle of 1915. This book was originally published anonymously during wartime, but today most sources attribute the diary to Kathleen Luard. Clearly she was a dedicated nurse and her writings take the reader to the heart of a war of mud and attrition, revealing the incredible work she and her colleagues undertook to care for their beloved 'Tommies'-particularly on the ambulance trains which collected the wounded from the front line to transport them to base hospitals and close to the firing line in Field Ambulance stations where her accounts of the plight of the wounded makes poignant and touching reading. An essential source work of the Great war from the female perspective.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A bloody episode of the Kentucky borderBy 1782 the American War of Independence was all but coming to its close and with it the birth of a new nation and the loss of an important colony for the British. The frontier settlements of Kentucky lay at the farthest reaches of European expansion, far away from the principal towns and cities of the established states, on the eastern seaboard of the continent. This was the frontier of its day where isolated farms, stockades, forts and villages were constantly in peril of attack by Indian tribes, their white allies and the British. Bryan's Station (sometimes called Bryant's Station) was a fortified settlement of forty cabins founded in 1775 on the Elkhorn Creek. It withstood attack on several occasions but in 1782, ten months after Cornwallis had surrendered at Yorktown, it came under siege by Canadian British forces under Caldwell, the renegade Simon Girty and 300 Shawnee Indians. The event was notable for an outstanding feat of bravery by the women of the settlement-which is of course recounted here in detail. When the besiegers discovered that relief was on its way in the form of the local militia they withdrew. After a pursuit of some 60 miles the British and their allies turned and lay in ambush. The combat that followed, known as the Battle of Blue Licks was disastrous for the Americans who lost 83 killed or captured for negligible loss among their enemy. Despite warnings from the veteran frontiersman Daniel Boone, who was with them, the militia blundered into the ambush losing nearly half their number including Boone's son, Israel, and the expedition's commanders, Todd and Trigg. Boone barely escaped on horseback, abandoning the body of his son who was mortally wounded in the neck. The engagement, the worse defeat suffered by Kentuckians during the war effectively ended the conflict in the east.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The last Indian raid in IowaThe winter of 1856-7 was a particularly severe one in Iowa, with prolonged heavy snowfall across the region. In March 1857 a chronic shortage of game and other food persuaded the renegade Santee Sioux leader, Scarlet Point, to lead a band of fourteen warriors into the widely separated settlements near the Okoboji and Spirit Lakes, in north western part of the state close to the Minnesota border. Whether or not the violence that followed could have been avoided is unclear, but certainly the Indians had enough experience to know that they could expect little charity from the settlers who had treated them harshly in the recent past. The raid resulted in the deaths of some 35-40 pioneer settlers as the Indians plundered their properties for provisions. The war party also took prisoners-three married women and a girl-whom they dragged northwards into the wilderness. A relief party from Fort Dodge, hampered by the extreme weather failed to defend the settlements and another from Fort Ridgely was unable to catch up to the fugitives. The youngest of the captives was fourteen year old Abie Gardner. She was held prisoner until the summer months of 1857 before being freed on payment of ransom. Two of the adult women were murdered but Margaret Ann Marble, the last of them, was also ransomed. This was the last Indian raid on settlers in Iowa though dissatisfaction among the Sioux was to lead to the Sioux Uprising and far greater bloodshed. Abie Gardner eventually married and, after a period away from her family home, returned to live in the cabin from which she was abducted and from there sold her book about the raid, her capture and ordeal to interested visitors.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Legionnaire and Fighter PilotAmerican soldier of fortune Bert Hall enlisted in the French Foreign Legion-Deuxieme Regiment Étranger-which was on its way to the front from Morocco, signing on for the duration of hostilities just two days after the Great War broke out in 1914. He served in the legion infantry, one of several welcome replacements from the United States of America who filled the gaps in the Legion's ranks created by the 1,800 German legionnaires who remained in North Africa so they would not oppose their fellow countrymen. The regiment was 4,000 strong and most of its number were killed during the first 18 months of the conflict. Hall fought in the trenches until the end of the first year of the war and the transferred to the air service where he was trained as pilot. After a period of reconnaissance flying, his first taste of action came in 1915 during the allied offensive around Champagne. Hall was well known as one of the renowned cadre of American pilots who formed the core in the legendary Lafayette Escadrille-the fighter squadron with the Indian head insignia. He experienced the air war of the Western Front in full measure before a transfer in late 1916 to the Eastern theatre to assist the Russians and Rumanians with their own war in the air. There he took part in the bombing of Sophia and found himself caught up in the Russian revolution. Hall tells his story compellingly and it is full of first hand account reportage. This book, written in 1918 before the end of hostilities, was not his only foray into authorship but it is particularly immediate since wartime events were still unfolding at the time of its original publication and he expected to return to action.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Sailors and AssegaisDuring the long years of Queen Victoria's reign there was little or no opportunity for the Royal Navy to reprise the role it had played in the great days of the age of sail and Nelson. Britannia ruled the waves and the job of the Royal Navy was to police the seaways and give support to land based campaigns. However, the blue jackets did come ashore often in the company of their beloved guns as naval brigades and their actions in the Crimea, the Indian Mutiny and other conflicts are renowned-as are the names of the vessels associated with them, H.M.S. Pearl, H.M.S. Shannon and others. Written by one of their number, an officer and doctor, this book principally concerns the activities of the men of H.M.S. Active and their service in South Africa. In the 1870s the ongoing unrest that prevailed in the colony was a continuation of the warfare, that had prevailed for many years, with the so called kafir tribes. From their arrival in 1877 the men of the Active were involved in ongoing campaigns to protect colonists, but their principal challenge came in 1879 as war broke out between the British and the martial Zulu tribe under their king, Cetywayo. The slaughter at Isandlwhana quickly established that these were foes of a differently quality and this account features the siege of Ekowe in some detail. Accounts of sailors serving ashore are always fascinating and this one is no exception. It is, of course an essential addition to any library of the Zulu War.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The bloody Plains Indian War-by one who foughtThis book was originally misleadingly titled The Indians of the Pikes Peak Region, which may have led the uninitiated to believe it is a work of ethnology. The author, Irving Howbert gives a short description of the country and its fauna around Pikes Peak, Colorado (named after the famous explorer Zebulon Pike) and also a brief insight into the indigenous Indian tribes that occupied the region-which was the home of the Utes who were bitter foes of the Cheyenne and Arapahoe tribes, the warriors of which would make forays into Ute country to wage their traditional warfare. However, the principal subject matter of Howbert's text is focussed on the Indian Wars of the 1860s from the perspective of a pioneer, settler, Indian fighter and volunteer in the Third Colorado Cavalry who took part in them. Howbert's membership of the Third Colorado put him in position to take part in one of the most notorious and controversial episodes in American frontier history, the Battle of Sand Creek, which if only to underline the point is also known as the Massacre of Sand Creek. On November 29th, 1864 a 700 strong force of Colorado and New Mexico troops, under Colonel John Chivington, destroyed the village of Black Kettle of the Northern Cheyenne killing many of the inhabitants. Perhaps predictably Howbert's account reads like a pitched battle not a one sided affair of unprovoked slaughter and it is clear he does not share the often accepted appraisal of the event. Controversy about the affair was already widespread before the publication of his book and Howbert examines it in some detail. The book concludes with an account of the Indian War of 1868.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A Treatise Upon the Duties of Light Troopsby Colonel von EhwaldTwenty-Three Years Practice and Observations with Rifle Gunsby Ezekiel BakerAn iconic weapon and the soldiers who carried itThis remarkable and unique Leonaur edition comprises two vital accounts; one concerning the development of the military rifle in the British Army and the other a treatise on the formation and operational activities of the light troops who employed it and who made both the rifle and themselves famous. The treatise, translated from the original German, is the work of Colonel von Ehwald and is essentially a guide book for the conduct of the petit guerre-the skirmishing combat the riflemen and other light infantry knew. Ehwald also covers the activities of light cavalry. This is very far from being simply a military instruction manual because the author was no mere theorist. He fought during the American War of Independence in British pay with the mercenary Hessians and commanded a 'Jaeger' corps of light troops in the Danish Army. So the concepts he explains in his book have been elaborated by the inclusion of descriptions real battlefield incidents based on personal experience. Those interested in the activities of light troops in action will be introduced to the activities of Simcoe's Queen's Rangers and others. In its original edition this book was published using an archaic form of printed English with widespread use of ligatured characters and a form of the letter 'f' used as the letter 's.' This edition has replaced those characters, often difficult to read for the modern reader, with contemporary forms, making Ehwald's text truly 'up to date.' Ehwald's book is accompanied here by Ezekiel Baker's remarkable book on the creation, construction, maintenanance, firing and capabilities of his legendary Baker Rifle, the weapon used to such deadly effect by the green coated riflemen-the 95th and 60th-of Wellington's Army of the Peninsular War and Waterloo. A must for all 'Rifles' enthusiasts.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The 'shark killers' of the U. S. fleetThe United States of America entered the First World War in April 1917, though its support for the allied war effort had, of course, been immensely influential in terms of the provision of material up to that point. The direct intervention of America in the war, with its vast resources of military personnel and equipment, backed by a huge manufacturing capacity, was inevitably pivotal. This account, part history, part anecdotal and part first hand account, was written shortly before the end of the conflict and describes in some detail the endeavours of the United States Navy during the war at sea in general and, more particularly, how it dealt with the omnipresent menace of the, 'German Shark'-the U Boats of the German Navy. This hidden undersea threat bore directly on America's role in the war. Men and vitally needed supplies had to traverse the Atlantic in merchant vessels to reach Europe. They were perilously exposed to the depredations of the German submarine force whose task it was to prevent them reaching their destinations. This well written and engaging book takes the reader to war on the United States Navy destroyers and with the navy pilots of early military aircraft whose task it was to pursue and destroy U-Boats in order to protect the vulnerable convoys of merchantmen on the high seas. Many interesting engagements, duels and sinkings are described in compelling detail from first hand experience. An essential book for all those particularly interested in submarine and anti-submarine warfare or the Great War generally.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A Companion to the New Rifle Musket A Practical Guide to Squad and Setting-up Drill Soldiers and their weapons These two military instruction guides have been published together because they are the work of a common author, S. Bertram Browne, and because both concern aspects of the business of soldiering from the perspective of ordinary soldiers in the British Army of mid nineteenth century. The young Queen Victoria came to the throne in 1837 and by the time the new Enfield Rifle Musket was introduced, some sixteen years later, her armies were engaged in colonial wars across the world and were on the verge of substantial conflicts in the Crimea and India. Their weapon was a .577 calibre muzzle loading 'Minie' rifle-musket of the type used by the British Army until 1867, when it was replaced by (or in many cases converted to) the cartridge-loading Snider Enfield rifle. The Enfield Rifle Musket was used by several armies and was notably employed in the Crimea and the New Zealand Wars by the British. Its particular notoriety arises from the Indian Mutiny, for it was this weapon-especially the method of loading it and the pig fat that allegedly protected the cartridge, thus defiling their caste-that has been cited as one of the principal causes of disaffection among the ranks of the Bengal Army, the outbreak of mutiny and its rapid spread. The Enfield Rifle Musket was also used in the American Civil War where, among others, Chamberlain's legendary 20th Maine were armed with it as they defended Little Round Top at Gettysburg. This 'companion' naturally explains to the reader everything about the gun's, use, care, construction and maintenance. The second guide in this volume contains a very interesting text best defined by its title and includes many diagrams which will be informative to the student of the period and instructive for re-enactors etc. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Two classic books of supernatural tales by masters of the genreThese two collections of supernatural short stories have been brought together in this special Leonaur edition because of their relatively small sizes and because each, in its way, has links to that great master of the academically inspired literature of the other worldly, M. R James. Swain's connection is quite straightforward-he knew and was a friend of James. They came from similar backgrounds, were academics and shared common interests-particularly concerning the church and its history. There can be little doubt that Swain was an ardent admirer of James' writing and while it is true that his own literary efforts are not in the class of the grand-master of the genre, to criticise him for that would be to forget that very few writers of supernatural tales have consistently risen to James' standard. Nonetheless, Swain's 'Stoneground Stories' are wonderfully charming. The principal character of these tales is, of course, based on Swain himself; he is a cleric whose benefice-like Swain's own at Stanground-sat close by the railway city of Peterborough in the English East Midlands. Those who relish a good ghost story will find much to enjoy in Swain's tales and little to regret. Cram was a renowned American architect by profession. He too was no stranger to the world of academia, since among many other important commissions of an ecclesiastical and collegiate nature he worked on the design for the military academy at West Point. Both these books are rare in their original editions and Leonaur has brought them together in this good value form so that enthusiasts may enjoy them.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Georges Guynemer, Knight of the Airby Henry BordeauxThe Chevalier of Flight: Captain Guynemerby Mary R. Parkman'Until one has given all, one has given nothing'Georges GuynemerThis special Leonaur edition contains two accounts of one the most most honoured French fighter aces of the First World War, Georges Guynemer. Born into a wealthy Parisian family, Guynemer was a sickly child and was initially rejected for military service, but through determination and perseverance he was first accepted as a mechanic in the opening year of the war and later qualified as a pilot flying a Morane-Saulnier aircraft in Escadrille MS. 3. In 1915 the squadron was renamed Escadrille N. 3 and re-equipped with Nieuport 10 fighter aircraft. It was while flying the Nieuport that Guynemer became an acknowledged 'ace' and established himself as a hero of his nation. By the end of 1916 he had 25 'kills' to his credit and his face-and his famous aircraft with the stork insignia-had became iconic. Lionised by the press and now influential, Guynemer involved himself in aircraft development and in 1917, flying a Spad VII-one of the aircraft he had helped improve-he was the first pilot to shoot down a German Gotha GIII heavy bomber. By July 1917 Guynemer had chalked up 50 kills. Shy and embarrassed by the attention he received as a national figure, Guynemer struggled with his fame, but this, ironically, made him even more attractive to a public eager for a 'chevalier' to divert their thoughts from the industrial scale, grinding attrition of the trenches. Georges Guynemer was reported lost in action over Belgium in September 1917 at the age of 22. Awarded many of his country's highest honours he remained an inspirational figure to the French throughout the Great War.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Neuware - Red Sticks, White Sticks and the war in AlabamaThe Creek Indian War, also known as the Red Stick War, took place between 1813-1814 and has been considered by many historians as part of the War of 1812. The Creek-or Muscogee-Indians of Alabama were effectively waging a civil war among themselves. One militant faction, the so called Red Sticks, proposed an aggressive return to the traditional life of their forebears and an end to treaties with and concessions to pioneer settlers represented by the United States government. The White Sticks, opting for peace, inevitably took the opposing view. Although the conflict began as one between the indigenous Indians, American forces, under the soon to be famous Andrew Jackson among others, were drawn into the conflict because much of the animosity was focussed on pioneer settlements. The conflict started in the usual manner of American Indian Wars-with the murder of settler families. The inevitable revenge and retribution that followed-and an escalation of the kind of merciless savagery the Americans had come to expect-culminated in the massacre of 500 settlers, friendly Indians, mixed blood Creeks and soldiers at Fort Mims in an attack led by the Red Stick war leader, Red Eagle. Other forts were also attacked. Panic spread through the region exacerbated by the inability of the Federal government to provide ready aid since it was engaged against the British and their Indian allies to the east. As a consequence much of the fighting was undertaken by militias from Tennessee, Georgia and Mississippi supported by White Stick allies. National hero, Davy Crockett, also served in this conflict. The war ended in a victory for the Americans and put Andrew Jackson on a path to the presidency and the White House. It was a disaster for the entire Creek Indian tribe-irrespective of their allegiances-who paid for the conflict through the confiscation of vast tracts of their traditional lands.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - An Authentic Narrative of the Loss of the American Brig 'Commerce'by James RileyA Journal, Comprising an Account of the Loss of the Brig 'Commerce', of Hartford, (Con.) James Riley, Masterby Archibald RobbinsA great American naval adventure of the early nineteenth centuryThe year 1815 was a momentous one. On the muddy slopes of Waterloo in Belgium Napoleon, who had set Europe ablaze for two decades, was brought to ruin. Across the Atlantic the United States of America had concluded its war with Britain having ended the conflict with a famous victory at New Orleans. Meanwhile in the eastern Atlantic an American merchant vessel and its crew underwent a drama which, although it was not significant to the world at large, would mean catastrophe, slavery and death for some of them. The brig Commerce out of Connecticut was sailing between Gibraltar and the Cape Verde Islands on a trading voyage when she ran aground on Cape Bojador off the coast of the Western Sahara desert. The ship and crew were attacked by local tribesmen of the Sahrawi. One man was killed and the rest of the crew, after terrible ordeals, were captured by Bedouin tribesmen. They suffered constant brutality at the hands of their captors as they were force marched through the desolate landscape and suffered dehydration and starvation before their eventual liberation. This Leonaur edition contains two accounts by crew members including one by the ship's master, James Riley. Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States cited Riley's book as one as the most significant and inspirational books he read as a youth. Indeed, Riley's account was a phenomenal bestseller in America at the time of its first publication selling over 1,000,000 copies. The second account here is by Archibald Robbins and is included to give readers a perspective on the incident from by one of the ship's able seamen.Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.…
