Neuware - Personal experiences by the men who wrote and drew the news in Zululand, 1879Following the successful reception of William Howard Russell's reporting of the Crimean War in 1856, the newspapers and periodicals of the world routinely sent special correspondents into the field with armies on campaign to witness and write reports for the eager readership 'at home'. Likewise, in a time when photography required bulky equipment and stationary subjects, the roving illustrator was also a common figure on campaign sketching all manner of scenes, from the commonplace to the momentous, which would be later engraved for publication. Many of these intrepid reporters and artists became notable figures in their own time. Predictably, when the decision was made to invade Zululand in 1879, the press corps of the day gravitated towards Lord Chelmsford's army. Some of these 'gentlemen of the press' in due course wrote books about the great events they had witnessed. However, this book contains four accounts -written by Melton Prior, Archibald Forbes, Charles Fripp and Charles Norris- Newman-which recount what happened to them personally during that campaign. These texts have been taken from autobiographical works, a magazine article and extracted-in the case of Norris-Newman- from his book, 'With the British Army in Zululand'. Both Prior and Fripp were extremely competent artists and examples of their work concerning the scenes of the Zulu War accompanies these texts. Indeed, those experiences occasionally appear within those illustrations. Neuware - The complete campaigns and battles of a young guards officer during the Napoleonic WarsCaptain Rees Howell Gronow, formerly of the Grenadier Guards, came to the attention of the British reading public during the middle years of the 19th century when he published a work of anecdotes of his life- much of it spent in London and Paris during the Regency period and thereafter. His collected snippets of insight, humour and gossip concerning the cream of high society of his time were an immediate success. Such was their popularity that another three volumes were subsequently written. Indeed, Gronow's books remained in print until modern times. A substantial number of these tales were-since the young Gronow had left Eton to become an ensign in the prestigious First Foot Guards (later Grenadier Guards) during the Napoleonic Wars -devoted to his time as a serving soldier; initially during the latter stages of the Peninsular War as the conflict progressed from Spain into south-western France and later-after the defeated emperor had absconded from Elba-during the One Hundred Days Campaign including the battles of Quatre Bras and Waterloo. There have been, of course, several eyewitness accounts penned by soldiers from the ranks of the British Army serving during the wars against Napoleon's French Empire that have been republished and which-for one reason or another-have been rightly well regarded. This account by John Green of the 68th regiment may not be so familiar to many readers, though it is without doubt one of the most engaging narratives of its kind. Lieutenant- Colonel Anthony Durnford was an Engineer and the senior officer on the field during the fateful Battle of Isandlwana. He died fighting against the overwhelming Zulu host during a holding action in an attempt to keep an avenue of escape open. The defence of the Mission Station at Rorke's Drift was , by coincidence, commanded by Lieutenant John Chard, Royal Engineers who had been tasked to repair pontoons across the Buffalo River and prepare other defensive works. This book contains two recollections of the Zulu War by possibly lesser widely known Royal Engineers extracted from their own memoirs. The first is by Sir Richard Harrison and the second by Sir Bindon Blood, eventually to become a renowned soldier in his own right, but in 1879 a captain of Royal Engineers who was initially appointed Harrison's adjutant. Harrison was, upon his arrival in Natal following the initial defeats, attached to Chelmsford's column so present at Ulundi and thereafter the Sekukuni War, whilst Blood joined the 1st Division under Crealock. The principal benefit of these comprehensive accounts will be that they have rarely been reproduced in tandem in their entirety. Neuware - From the stage to subterfuge-a spy's story in her own wordsBorn Harriet Wood in 1833, New Orleans the subject of this remarkable book made her stage debut as an actress in Louisville, Kentucky in 1862. From there she moved to New York where she adopted the stage name, Pauline Cushman. After one performance Pauline accepted money to toast the Confederate President, Jefferson Davis which resulted in her dismissal. However, Cushman decided to put her good offices with the Confederacy to good purpose by becoming a Union spy. Her dramatic experience proved invaluable, because she was initially extremely successful, fraternising with senior enemy army officers and gaining important information- sometimes concealing battle-plans in her shoes. Her good fortune eventually expired and she was caught in 1864 on two occasions. Pauline was brought before Braxton Bragg and sentenced to death, but the execution was postponed and she escaped the noose when Union troops occupied the area. Nevertheless, her escapades resulted in two woundings and some sources suggest she also even spied wearing uniform. Cushman was awarded the rank of brevet major by General James Garfield and she was further made an honorary major by President Lincoln. Thereafter, she became known as 'Miss Major Pauline Cushman' and by 1865 and the close of the American Civil War she was operating lecture tours. In common which several of her contemporaries Pauline became the subject of an account of her adventures -almost certainly embellished with advantages. Nevertheless, hers is a remarkable story of a brave and resolute patriot. Written following another first hand account written anonymously by a soldier of the same regiment -the 71st regiment of foot-then known as the Glasgow Regiment, the author first experienced action at the Battle of Rolica (Roleia) followed by the Battle of Vimeiro, 1808 in Portugal. Following evacuation of the British Army from Coruna the 71st took part in the disastrous Walcheren Expedition of 1809 before returning, once again, to the Peninsular War. The author fought at Fuentes de Onoro, Arroyo dos Monlinos, Almarez, Vittoria, the Pyrenees, Orthez and Toulouse. Although the regiment fought at Waterloo the author's account concludes on his return home where we are told he was just one of four survivors of his company of over 100 men. Possibly because the author remained anonymous his account is extraordinarily candid as he reveals the horrors of the battlefield, the hardships of life on campaign and the failings of the army including several severe criticisms of those in command. Neuware - Dunsterforce and its campaign across the CaucasusMost readers know that the principal adolescent who appeared in Rudyard Kipling's tale,'Stalky and Co', was based on an actual person, Lionel Dunsterville, who was a school friend of the author. Stalky, the ring-leader of a roguish trio, was destined for a military career in India and so it was for Dunsterville. He served on the North-western Frontier and during the Boxer Rebellion in China. In 1917, during the First World War, Dunsterville was a major-general put in command of a small allied force originally of less than 500 effectives (including British, Australian, Canadian and New Zealand troops- later joined by the 39th Infantry Brigade ) together with 500 vans and armoured cars. The mission of this unit was to advance 350 km from Hamdan in the Zagros Mountains across Qajar Persia to gather intelligence and train local forces to replace Tsarist troops following the Russian revolution. In fact, the force actually came into action itself against Jingali rebels at Manjil. Dunsterville was subsequently instructed to assist in the defence of the important oil fields and port of Baku, though compelled to withdraw in September 1918 in the face massively superior advancing Ottoman Turkish forces. This Leonaur edition contains two linked accounts by Dunsterville. Neuware - Roger Lamb's war in America plus two regimental historiesEvery published recollection written by a soldier-irrespective of the time and conflict in which he served-is of inestimable value to posterity and to the historians and students that read them. Some achieve particular recognition . They may be particularly well written, some are especially rare in their subject material or particularly riveting in the tale they tell. Some, despite all of these considerations of quality being present, nevertheless, remain obscure. This account by Roger Lamb of his time serving as a British infantryman in America during the American War of Independence (American Revolution)may well be said to owe its enduring renown to the fact that the author and central character was adopted by the author and poet, Robert Graves ( 'I, Claudius') for two novels written during the early 1940's. The actual Roger Lamb's military career which inspired Graves and is recounted in these pages was certainly full of incident and interest. He served in the Saratoga Campaign of 1777 and The Campaign of 1781 in the Carolinas to Virginia. He was captured and escaped twice.
